The Memory Lane Staff for 62,' has tried to create and dedicate this book with a Brand New View. Our Miss Memory Lane will suffice as an example of bringing in the new. Yes, our freshmen have been a new view too. They -have come to W.H.S. for the first time and will share the memories we have. They will also receive many ideas for new traditions and carry on the spirit of Washington that has kept it one of the best. . Miss Memory Lane Crowned For First A new tradition began at Washing- ton High School with the crowning of Miss Memory Lanen on September 30, 1961. The festivities took place at the yearbook-sponsored dance held in the gymnasium amid pumpkins and corn stalks and other fall decorations. Vicki Skubis and Janice Modory were in charge of arrangements for the dance. Gloria Bie- buyck was in charge of decorations, and the crowns were made by Sandy Sekendy. At 9100 p.m. the court was announc- ed. Each girl wore a white mum corsage and was crowned with a glittering green crown trimmed with white fur. After the introduction of the court, the queen was announced. Jeaneen Hicks became the first Miss Memory Lanef, Jeaneen's first official duty was to select the winner of the free subscription to the Memory Lanef' Then, dancing resumed with the coronation dance led by Miss Memory Lane and her escort. The queen, court, and escorts: Paul Drzewiecki, Bonnie Buda, Len Starczewski, Carol Ols- zewski, John Seanor, Erica Olson, Steve Sayer, MissMemory Lane, Lorriane Swartz, A1 Ridenour, Kathleen Olejniczak, Dennis Thompson, Cathy Thomas, Dennis Nemeth 'S ,. ,f i i . . . . . .the glittering green crowns. lleftj The Coronation Dance O Il e U t w o c h 3 I c h a -cha Next is Miss Carl Olszewski escorted by Len Starszewski -5- FUN THE CUE in H6299 Activities is the key to a room full of mem- ories for the year 1961-1962. As in years past, and in years to come, no other field in our cur- riculum will be more cherished. Clubs always offered us many chances for activity. An example of this is the Booster Club which participated in the decorating of goal posts, selling of school buttons, and the selling of pro- grams at the football games, all which promoted school spirit. Plays were presented, dances were held, and courts were crowned. All this was part of the memories we would like to share with you as you leaf through Memory Lane. ACTIVITIES AND CLUBQS An Average Day An average day in the life of a typical W.H.S. student begins with breakfast. If you are on a diet or try- ing to get into a special weight class in wrestling, your breakfast may be like that pictured on the left-the fruit juice for your sunshine vitamins and the vitamin pill, to make up for the lack of food in the meal. After a good, healthy breakfast, the student prepares for school. Be- fore going out to catch the bus, our devoted student takes one last look at his English assignment, then rushes to the door. He says goodbye to his parents and the next moment we find him standing on the corner wa1t1ng for the bus The picture below was taken after a vigor- ous bus ride and there s nothing l1ke a vigorous bus ride, complete with pushing and fight- t Although the cafeteria serves many fine plate lunches, a hamburger, potato chips, and a malt can usually satisfy any student's appetite. So another nourishing meal goes by and back to class go the students. This class looks like a boys' study hall. All interest at the moment, though, doesn't seem to be centered on studying, but rather on a student who is evidently overcome by the activities of a busy school day. Wake up, Tom, it's almost 3:15. -10- School's out, and look at the expressions on the faces of our students! I think they are the happiest we've seen them all day. But why shouldn't they be? This average day just happens to be a Friday, and there's a game tonight. The bus ride home is very similar to the ride to school, but because the bus is headed in the opposite direction, the over-all tone of the conversation is on the lighter side. Linda Van Paris decided to get a little of her homework out of the way be- fore going to the game, and we see her hard at work in the picture on the left. A telephone sure comes in handy when you aren't sure about the assignment. -11- k Many of Washington's students use their time out of school to earn extra money. Above, Jim Badowski, a senior, is whon working at a neighborhood store. Below, the stands are filled for the evening's basketball game. Enthusiasm is at a peak as the boys try to out-yell the girls and cheer the team on. -12- Mike Kalb provided extra enter- tainment at the dance as you can see in the picture on the right. After the dance, the crowd usually meets at a nearby restaurant to prolong the evening just a little longer. Ordinary procedure seldom includes a mouth full of tea bag, but tonight was an ex- ception. Chris Jackowiak does the honors for Cathy Hiles as Eileen Quinn, Cynthia King, and Jerry Po- mush look on, amused. The day of a typical Washington student ends on a happy note as the next one begins Washington's Candid Camera Pam Hernicz walks in, unsuspecting, admit in hand. Did you ever wonder what you'd look like on Candid Camera? Well, eleven Wash- ingtonians now know. Of course, it's not Mr. Funt's original, but we think ours is just as good. Certain students received mysterious ad- mits during their study hall saying simply-- Please come to room 912 for about ten min- utes. Each admit had a different time on it, and one by one the students started toward 912. Little did they know that room 912, a little vacant room near the yearbook office, had a camera waiting to catch the expression on their faces as they opened the door. There was a variety of results and Wash- ington's candid camera was a success. See for yourself. Carol Wozny: Hee hee, my pic- ture'll be in the Yearbook. Hee Sharon Pomush: What??! hee! Art Jaronik: Oh, for Pete's sake! -14- Connie Williams: What could they want? for? Joanne Stroup: There must be some mistake. Willie Veldman smiled--he was on Candid Cam- era! Bob Stewart: Aw oh! I thought there was some- thing fishy about this! Jim Burnham: If they thinkidid it, they're crazy! -15- Tom Haluda: Maybe if I sneak in quietly .... Mr. Heineman was even taken in by our stunt. vf lt I H Royalty Reigns Over Orchids In The Moonlight Amid frills and flowers the juniors danc- ed to the music of The Eddy Knight Orches- tra at their annual Junior Prom. Orchids in the Moonlight was held on April 29, 1961 at the Progress Club. Reigning over the Prom were Prince Richard Kraft and Princess Bar- bara Borowiak. Newly Crowned Queen Accepts Crown And A Victory For Washington Beverly J erczak reigned as Queen of the 1962 Washington Basketball Court at the an- nual Washington-Central basketball game and royal festivities on January 25, 1962. Selected from homeroom 521 to com- pete against six senior queen candidates, Bev- erly waited excitedly with the other finalists for the half time announcement that made her queen. Part of her royal duties included the traditional exchange of roses with the Central basketball queen. The queen's court was made up of four junior girls and four senior girls and their escorts. Arrangements for the basketball court were made by the Booster Club. Halftime an- nouncement of the court was made by Sandy Sekendy, vice president. Vicki Skubis, presi- dent, did the crowning. Of A Senior Year Of Traditional Activities Gloria Biebuyck, a senior from homeroom 519, reigned as the Washington football queen in the 1961 Washington-Riley Roundup. Although the staging was different, the Washington-Riley Roundup still fostered friend- ship and established good sportsmanship between Washington and Riley. The Roundup bef gan on Thursday, September 14, with Riley playing host to Washington in their own back yard. Rich Kraft and the Riley football co-captains lit the bonfire which signified the spirit of the Roundup. Tension mounted as the court awaited the crowning. After speeches by Principal MacNamara, Coach Roggeman, and sports announcer Jim Wilson of WSBT, the court was announced by Len Starczewski, Student Council president, and crowned by the cheerleaders. -19- QQ 99 Drama Club presents Harvey Harvey , the mythical Pooka, was presented by the Drama Club on May 26 and 27, 1961. The Mary Chase farce was the third Drama Club pro- duction. The action of the play concerned Elwood P. Dowd, an elderly and eccentric bachelor who lived with his sister at the Dowd family mansion. Elwood was the only person Harvey haunted and the ensuing circumstances caused Elwoodls sister many anxieties and the audience many laughs. Members of the cast were: Myrtle Mae Simmons ............ Dancing was preceded by a skit in which the seniors were carried back to the days of the Wild West and Marshall Mi1lon's Chevy City. After the skit the Seniors danced to the music of the Mark V's. -22- Many new styles and fads have appeared at Washington during the past year. To name just a few, there were circle pins, bubble hairdos, rock bracelets, leaf pins, fur hats, Liz Taylor blouses, short skirts, fur on boy- friend's rings, twist blouses, and of course, the twist, the pony, the Continental, the stomp, and even mashed potatoes. To the right Jim Molnar and Becky Hag- quist model their matching shirts, another fad that has spread among the couples at school. Above are some of the various shoe styles the girls could be seen wearing this year. Tom Wruble and Linda Krug stand by her locker with their matching sweaters which have come to South Bend in many different styles. So ends a busy and exciting school year for all involved. The mem- bers of these sections are selected by Mr. FitzHenry after participating in tryouts which include singing solos, sight reading, and blending voices with other singers. These groups rehearse in the mornings at 7:30 a.m. two days a week. The governing body of the Glee Club is the Glee Club Board. During two long months, these people co-operated wonderfully by al- lowing us to literally push them into the hall. Finally managing to complete our picture taking, we would like to acknowledge our many thanks for their kindness. Thank you Mr. Heineman, Mr. VanGilder, and homeroom 915!!! Carrying on the greatest amount of business in the least amount of space. While waiting for his classroom to be evacuated, Mr. VanGilder reads the I-Iatchetf' - - VICTORIES MANY, LOSSES FEW ' H6299 The teams of Washington High have brought us many wonderful victories this year. In years past our teams, such as the football team and basketball team, have done wellg however, this year our football team started the season off with a bang by winning the Eastern Division and Northern Indiana High School Conference. To the Senior Class this was a mark of greatness for the team. As a matter of fact, this was great to the whole school because this meant a good begin- ning to a good year. We know well, too, that all the other teams of Washington High School have done their best to bring WHS MANY VICTORIES ---- LOSSES FEW. Washington High Schools 1961-62 basketball season ended with a 10-12 record. The round-ballers were very successful in the 1961 campaign, compiling a 7-3 record, then an eight game losing streak hit the team. Victories over Gary Roosevelt and Laporte were highlights of the season. But the victory over highly rated Central was the brightest spot. The sectionals were played for the first time at Washington. Washington defeated Riley in an overtime, but lost by two points to Adams in the final quarter. With about half of this year's varsity returning, WHS should look for- ward to a successful season next year. A teacher's responsibility doesn't begin and end in his classroom, nor does his interest in us lie in teaching only. If you will but look back and remember, who were the ones to sponsor our clubs and activities, to guide us through periods of un- certainty, to cheer for and with us at the games, to cry and laugh with us at our plays and proms, our teachers were always there. Ever remembering, ever grateful, the class of '62 sends thanks to you.
