WASHINGTON vs CENTRAL Playing against the State Champions, South Bend Central, Washington played them to a stand still for nearly half of the game. Into the final two quarters though, Central pulled ahead to notch a victory, 21-6 WASHINGTON vs ST. JOSEPH The Panthers went out after the scalps of the St. Joseph Indians next. With fleet scatbacks of Washington running wild around end, the Pan- thers coasted to a 19-7 margin. Gary Fujawa put on a dazzling display of feinting, Manson Davis, Carothers, Vargo and Reggie Glon all put on a terrific performance. WASHINGTON vs RILEY Next in line was Riley. The Wildcats were out to improve on their 0-0 tie with Washington last year. However, Riley followers wer disap- pointed. The Panthers blanked their Ewing Street rivals 27-0 WASHINGTON vs GOSHEN The season finale was a heartbreaker. Goshen scored early and added a safety to lead 8-0. Wash- ington retaliated in the second half, but fell shy by 1 meager point 8-7. Thus Washington ended the ' 59 season with a record of 5 wins and 4 losses. - 19

WASHINGTON vs FORT WAYNE C. C. The Panthers of 1959 entered the campaign under the direction of their new head coach, Tom Roggeman. They made their debut by running rough shod over Fort Wayne C.C. 42-0. Ashley Carothers and Fred Vargo each scored a pair of tallies. WASHINGTON vs ADAMS The Panthers followed up the victory over C.C. by ringing up a decisive victory over John Adams 28-12. Once again it was Fred Vargo and Ashley Carothers displaying the antics that earn- ed Washington the victory. WASHINGTON vs ELKHART Elkhart put an abrupt end to Washington ' s short winning skein, 20-0. The Panthers just couldn ' t seem to get going, while the Blazers rol- led to an easy conference win WASHINGTON vs MISHAWAKA The W.H.S. men seemingly took out their revenge on twin-city rival Mishawaka, as they romped home 28-0. Fred Vargo highlighted the game with an 80 yard kickoff return and a 53 yard punt runback. WASHINGTON vs LAPORTE Against LaPorte, Washington found that a lad by the name of Bob Strieter was not one that would soon be forgotten. The 211 lb. fullback lit- erally ran all over the Panthers, as the Slicers chalked up a 32-20 victory. 18
