Well, be- cause tonight was the night of our Senior Play, November 20 and 21. We presented Time Out For Ginger, a comedy in three acts, directed by Miss Carolyn Hopkins, with Lorraine Rzeszewski as student director. Everyone was nervous and excited, but after the play was over we all felt very proud of our class. We forgot all the hard work we had done and thought only of the huge success our play had been. Now our Senior Play, too, is just one of the memories of the class of 60 . Ah, but such wonderful memories. Junior Play Door CAST Standing: J. VanTomhout, B. Wis- niewski, S. Barren, First: C. There was excitement and tension on opening night, but as the play progressed and laughter was heard, the glow of satisfaction could be seen on our faces. All our hard work seemed to vanish as we heard the applause at the end of the play. Now the play is one of the memories of the Class of 60 . We will always look back with pride when we think of our Junior Play. 9- Washington- Riley Roundup Working on the float On the way to Walter Field The crowning of the court Left to right: Stepniewski, Ranschaert, Copenhaver, Queen Bobelenyi, Glon, Slaby, Brant, Nevins. 10 The Night Of The Game Queen Bobelenyi and Boulanger R. Everyone was excited, but more tension mounted as the time for the crowning of the courts grew near. Finally it was announced that Judy Ranschaert and Gary Fujawa were the Princess and Prince, and that Gerri Cor- meny and Jim Wituski were the Queen and King. Now the prom is just a memory, but one we won ' t forget for a long time. We shall always remember it as a part of our high school years. Crowning of Queen and King, Gerri Cormeny and Jim Wituski by Trudy Slaby 13- Sports As we look back at the sports we have supported and participated in during our four years here at Wash- ington High School, we get tears in our eyes. There were times when the going was good and we yelled and cheered for victory. But then there were times when the going was rough and de- feat was in sight. Still we cheered our teams on, back- ing them all the way. When we leave we will no longer be a part of the student body, but, as alumni, we shall still cheer the teams on, for they shall always be a part of us, win or lose. Leo Zuckowsky Coaches Subby Nowicki Jerry Klabor Mr. Zuckowsky led our splashers to a successful swimming campaign. His club wound up 7th in the conference and 10th in the state. Now that we have our own pool, Mr. Zuckowsky hopes that Washington ' s swimming for- tunes will boom. Mr. Nowicki is our basketball and B-team baseball coach. With our new gym, Mr. Nowicki is looking forward to the future with a sparkle in his eyes. Joe Redling Mr. Klaybor split his year into two parts; football and track. He led our B- Team in football and them took over as head man in track. Going into the 1960 season Mr Klaybor has a track record of 24 wins and only 3 losses. Since 1953 Mr. Redling has been our athletic director. During the fall season he also aids in assisting the football club. Mr. Roggeman assumed the role as head man in two different sports, foot- ball and wrestling. His physical attri- butes show why he is so capable to take charge of these sports. Our freshmen basketball and var- sity baseball coach experienced a very satisfying year. He compiled a 14-6 mark in basketball and expected as good a season on the diamond, where the Panthers will defend their City Tournament crown. This year was a winning one for our Harriers. They defeated John Ad- ams three times and Central once as a feature of their season. Hats of to Mr. GuUifor for his teams effort. They made their debut by running rough shod over Fort Wayne C.C. 42-0. Ashley Carothers and Fred Vargo each scored a pair of tallies. WASHINGTON vs ADAMS The Panthers followed up the victory over C.C. by ringing up a decisive victory over John Adams 28-12. Once again it was Fred Vargo and Ashley Carothers displaying the antics that earn- ed Washington the victory. WASHINGTON vs ELKHART Elkhart put an abrupt end to Washington ' s short winning skein, 20-0. The Panthers just couldn ' t seem to get going, while the Blazers rol- led to an easy conference win WASHINGTON vs MISHAWAKA The W.H.S. men seemingly took out their revenge on twin-city rival Mishawaka, as they romped home 28-0. Fred Vargo highlighted the game with an 80 yard kickoff return and a 53 yard punt runback. WASHINGTON vs LAPORTE Against LaPorte, Washington found that a lad by the name of Bob Strieter was not one that would soon be forgotten. The 211 lb. fullback lit- erally ran all over the Panthers, as the Slicers chalked up a 32-20 victory. 18 WASHINGTON vs CENTRAL Playing against the State Champions, South Bend Central, Washington played them to a stand still for nearly half of the game. Into the final two quarters though, Central pulled ahead to notch a victory, 21-6 WASHINGTON vs ST. JOSEPH The Panthers went out after the scalps of the St. Joseph Indians next. With fleet scatbacks of Washington running wild around end, the Pan- thers coasted to a 19-7 margin. Gary Fujawa put on a dazzling display of feinting, Manson Davis, Carothers, Vargo and Reggie Glon all put on a terrific performance. WASHINGTON vs RILEY Next in line was Riley. The Wildcats were out to improve on their 0-0 tie with Washington last year. However, Riley followers wer disap- pointed. The Panthers blanked their Ewing Street rivals 27-0 WASHINGTON vs GOSHEN The season finale was a heartbreaker. Goshen scored early and added a safety to lead 8-0. Wash- ington retaliated in the second half, but fell shy by 1 meager point 8-7. Thus Washington ended the ' 59 season with a record of 5 wins and 4 losses. - 19 Talking It Over Not So Hard Man Most Valuable Player Fred Varge Most Valuable Lineman Reggie Glen -20- (T% B Team A ® A. To add to their prestige, the Freshmen defeated Riley, Adams and St. Joe twice apiece. The Panthers at one time boasted a seven-game winning streak and a five-game streak. Tom Forray and Al Carothers paced the club in scoring. Forray exhibited a fine set shot, while Carothers relied mostly on his speed. W. H. S. 37 Adams 41 W. H. S. 15 Laporte 34 44 Elk. The Panthers ended the mat season with a record of 3 wins, 6 losses and 1 tie. Senior Ron Vargo and Jun- ior Dave Ferency completed their schedule with only one defeat marring their dual compe- tition record. Washington Matmen started things against Washington Clay. The Panthers coasted to an easy victory, 43-15 with the aid of 8 Panther pins. Against a very experienced outfit the Riley Wildcat ' s Washington found the going to be rough. The Panthers outman- ned, but not outfought, went down to defeat neighbors, Mishawaks. The W. H..S. men had little trouble in capturing this dual meet, as they doubled the score on the Cavemen, 32-26. Probably the best team effort came against Penn Twp. Washington displayed inspired team work, ringing up a 29-21 win. Bob Klemczewski and Jerry Butler choked off a desperate Penn. rally to notch the victory for the Panthers. In the meet between Howe Military and Washington, the Cadets put on a terrific finish to squeeze by our Panthers 28-25. 27 ' ' Cheerleaders ' ' Carol Lee Stepniewski Becky Crowder Trudy Slaby Yvette Kaluzny I Judy Ranschaert Glenda Martin Margaret Pilarski -28- Varsity Cheerleaders f ■ .
