STILSON Class Hi tor Seniors!!! my, what a wonderful title . . . ours all this year '54 - '55. It is what we dreamed of always. It was so long to come, so soon to go. Before we lose it, let's turn the pages back to the day when we were Freshmen and this Iune seemed so far away. As we entered the building in our Freshman year, we felt proud but yet we were afraid and quite uncertain of the things that would happen. I'm sure we will never forget the feeling we had when we went to the first assembly and saw all those strange faces. Everyone was curious and quite uncertain about who would be his home room teacher and if any of his friends would be with him. In our first year in high school, we also had our first experience with the voting machines. We elected Carolyn Filchak as our president. Remember the great time we had at our first social event, the Freshman Party? At the end of the year Shelia Brantley and Dick Stenberg received the DAR citizen- ship awards. But we survived the troublesome year and we finally began to feel as though we were really a part of Washington High. When we came back in our Sophomore year we found that something new had been added. We had a new principal, Mr. McNamara. So, once again, things seemed quite strange. not only to us but all the others as well. Everyone was anxious to see how things would be with a new principal. Things didn't look too bad, though, and we elected Mike Mondovics as president. To really get into the swing of things, everyone began joining the various clubs. Our activities were once again limited to a class party, but a good time was had by all that attended the event. With the year coming to a close, everyone was already looking forward to coming back in the fall. As we returned from our vacation, everyone seemed to say, Gee. but it's great to be a Iunior. After all, by now we had two green classes under us. To start the year off with a real bang we chose Ron Meiszberg, president: Iosie Molnar, vice-president: Marlene Meert, secretary: and Bugsy Meszaros, treasurer. Our football team had a great season, capturing the State Football Championship. Mike Mondovics and Ioe Kozakiewicz made the Tribune's N.I.H.S. Conference Football Team and the All-Twin City team of 1953, with many more getting honorable mention. ln basketball. we won the City Championship and the Holiday Tourney which were real accomplishments. We had many things to look forward to in the spring. First, we had our class play, Seven Sisters. Barb Borowski and Sally Albert won the leads. It was a wonderful experience for all who par- ticipated. Another all-important .event was the ordering of our senior rings, which we received on May 15. This gave a spark to everyone. Last but not least, came the Iunior-Senior Prom, which was held at the Indiana Club on May 28. Ioan Galvas and Vic Kasznia were chosen to be princess and prince. On the Iunior Court were Iosie Molnar, Mary Io Weninger, Ioan Schweiger, and Marlene Meert. Many mem- bers of the class participated in the Glee Club production, The College Widow . At the end of the year Meert, Talboom, Sten- berg, Weninger, Arelt, and Watson were chosen to be members of the National Honor Society and McClone, Meert, Brantley, and Stenberg were chosen to be the page editors of the Hatchet, which was to be taken over by Mr. Guin in the fall. By this time we felt as though everything was in the bag. Then. all at once, we were Seniors. It was a wonderful feeling to walk down the hall - you felt so important. After all, we were tops now! Under Matt Iackowiak, our football team had a good season. With George Hill as captain, our basketball team once again won the Holiday 'Tourney and City Champion- ship. Bob Rogers and Ron Andrzejewski, swimming co-captains. Dick Dering, baseball captain: and track co-captains. Bugsy Meszaros and Clyde Austin, all seniors, led our teams to re- spectable seasons in their respective sports. For our class officers we elected Ron Meisberg as president: Dick Thompson. vice-president: Marlene Meert, secretary: Ernie Meszaros, treasurer: Mary Forray, historian: and Art Widawski, social chairman. Seniors who were chosen as presidents of the various school clubs were Marlene Meert, Ushers' Club: Mary Forray, Panda Club: Sue Bartok, Y-Teens: Dick Dering, Hi-Y: Dick Stenberg, Student Council: Ernie Niedbala, Latin Club: Frances Urban, FTA: Marguerite Watson. Library Club: Darlene Olden. Nurses' Club: and Mary Forray and Ioan Schweiger were chosen to be the Co-editors of the 1955 Memory Lane. Our Senior Varsity Cheerleader for football was Dolores Aszklar. Marlene Meert reigned as queen of the Washington-Riley Roundup. On her court were Shelia Brantley, Ioan Galvas, Carol Grzeskowiak, Betty McClone, Marcia Plencner, and Ioan Schwei- ger. The members of the class who were Iunior Rotarians and Iunior Kiwanis members were Dick Thompson, Ron Meiszberg, Dick Stenberg, Don Ogorek, Matt Iackowiak, lim Northrup, Iim Sinkiewicz. and Ron Andrzejewski. Don't Take My Penny was chosen for our senior produc- tion. With Miss Fortin directing, we had a double cast of nine girls and eight boys, Mary Io Weninger and Iosie Molnar getting the leads. The play was a real success and everyone who took part in it had a wonderful time. On April 3. it was announced that Marguerite Watson was to be class valedictorian and Marlene Meert and Richard Sten- berg were to be class salutatorians. With the passing of time and the nearing of graduation. everyone was looking forward to the last social occasion when we would all be together - the all-important Iunior-Senior Prom which was held at the Indiana Club on May 27 from 9 to 12. Tony Ruli furnished the music. And so our years at Washington High came to an end. They were four wonderful years in which we accomplished many things. Our school spirit. our countless hours of study, and our good times together were not in vain. For all this will help us to help make our community a better place for everyone to live in. As we receive our diplomas. we know that as a group we shall never be together again, but our spirit will never leave us as we strive to go Ever Onward.
