( lads J lstot V As we walk along the road to success, we come to a stair- way . . ., the stairway to our diploma! This stairway has lout steps, and they are four very important steps. Our class oHicers were Pete Meszaros, president; Bill Forrest, vice-president; Pat Aftowski, secretary; Pat Michalski, treasurer: and Ronnie Meert, historian. STEP ONE. Freshman Year. Our freshman year started in the fall of 1949. Our class enrolled the first freshmen ever to come from Wilson. As freshmen will be freshmen, we were all very timid until our party in October. After we became better acquainted, we elected Dan Morozowski as our president. We had our first experience with the voting machine in doing so. Ouf freshman basketball team won for the first time the city tourney. Our representatives in the spring musical, Calendar Revue were Sheila Howe, Pat Aftowski, and Tom Plonski in name parts. At the end of the year Ronnie Meert and Dolores Popielski received the D. A. R. Citizenship Awards. And so we made our first step. Senior presidents of our school clubs were Bob LeeVan, Hi-Y; Janet Runnels, Library Club; Theresa Lewis, Panda Club; Sheila Howe and Tom Plonski, Glee Club; Fred McGrew, Cadet Teach- ers; Steve Kosanovich, Student Council; and Pat Michalski, Girls ' Ushers ' Club. Mary Lou Pietrzak was selected as editor of our yearbook. In the fall Dolores Szymanowski was chosen Queen of the Washington-Riley Roundup. On har court were Pat Michalski, Rita Bryda, Loretta Korpal, Mary lane Osowski, Dolores Frasz, Roselle Meszaros, Marilyn Buckner, Sheila Howe, and Barbara Nitka. STEP TWO. Sophomore Year. We ' re now on our way up — the second step. Added to the faculty this fall were two male teachers, Mr. Lawecki and Mr. Miller. With Don Czajkowski as president. Bob LeeVan as vice-president, Rita Witucki as secre- tary, and Dolores Haluda as treasurer, we kept our stride. Pat Aftowski played the lead in the Glee Club musical, The Rose of Algeria , with Tom Plonski and Tom Hubbard playing name parts. Our second step was in the bag . The Junior Rotarians and Kiwanis members were Pete Meszaros, Bill Forrest, Bill Van Koskey, Tom Hubbard, Ronnie Meert, and Jerome Kazmierczak. The senior production this year was The Song of Berna- dette . The double cast consisted of twenty-eight girls and four- teen boys, with Janet Runnels ond Tressie True taking the leads. STEP THREE. Junior Year. As we returned from our vaca- tion, we had a big (6 ' 5 plus) surprise ... a new principal. FeeUng a bit on the important side now, we were anxious to see what the situation would be with the new principal, Mr. McNamara. Dan Morozowski was our president, with Theresa Lewis, Janet Runnels, Don Czajkowski, and Pat Van Putte holding the remaining offices. In the spring our class gave Meet Corliss Archer , its first production as a class. The double cast consisted of eight boys and sixteen girls. Another first for our class was the Senior-Junior Prom. It was held May 15 at the Progress Club and Dick Strike furnished the music. Dolores Szymanowski and Pete Meszaros were chosen as our princess and prince and Audrey Abraham, Tressie True, and Pat Solmos were on the junior court. Some members of our class took part in the Glee Club production. At the end of the year Mary Jane Osowski was named as the editor of the Hatchet. We set a new precedent by receiving our class rings in the spring. This gave a spark to the end of our third year in high school. STEP FOUR. Senior Year. Our final year in high school! Being seniors, we were the leaders of the school. Under our Co- captains, seniors Bill Forrest and Bob Niespodziany, our football team c?rp(ured the State Football Championship. In basketball, with cc Jin senior Jim Easton, we won the City Championship for the ,flrst time. George Niver, swimming captain; Bob LeeVan, basCB captain; and track co-captains Bill Elmore and Steve our teams to respectable seasons in their Seskej Tjtseniois, Jed ou I6spec(hre nfts. L ■ The Glee Club this year gave The College Widow as its annual production. Playing the leads were Pat Aftowski and Sylvia Wachowiak, with Tom Plonski, Fred McGrew. Bill Van Koskey, Victor Gary, Mary Ann Meszaros, and Beverly Laisure playing name parts. The Senior Varsity Cheerleaders were Mary Ann Meszaros, Pat Zalas, Joan Poznanski, Tressie True, June Urbanski, and Carol Wentland. The scholastic leaders of the 1954 graduating class were named in the spring. The Valedictorian ond Salutatorian are Sheila Howe and Tom Plonski, respectively. Other seniors brought honor to themselves and Washington. Tom Hubbard received an NROTC Scholarship which he will use at Purdue and Steve Piacsek won the St. Joseph Valley Notre Dame Club four-year scholarship to Notre Dame. This completes the stair-way and our struggle to the top! Our years in Washington High School will never be forgotten. They have been years of accomplishment for all of us who are graduating. With the accomplishments we have mastered, we intend in the future, to make our community a better place to live in for you and us. Our school spirit, our good times to- gether, and our countless hours of study were not ir vain.
