'IM Now that we are leaving the halls of Washington High School, we, The Class of '52, being of sound mind and body, wish to leave some of our dearest possessions to the underclassmen. I, Jim Colpaert, will my ability to finish high school without failing a required course to any freshman who is interested. I, Jeanne Nagy, will all my worries, headaches, and gray hairs on the Hatchet to the person willing to take them over next year. I, Florence Bethel, will to see Thelma Phillips, Evelyn Nesbitt, and DeWilla Phillips receive diplomas from Washington. to my sister, Marge, and hope she will have as much fun hitting people I, Carl Zwierzynski, will my harmony with Miss Halnon in home room to some coming freshman. We, Jane Perzak and Delphine Zielinski, will our great friendship, in which we argue and make up just as fast, to any two students always arguing. We, Dan Buczynski and Ron Trojanowski, will our mischievousness and pranks to future members of the chemistry class. We, Alice Sabaj and Betty Steenbeke, will the mystery of The Shad- ows to anyone who can get Miss Halnon to tell them the answer. I, Dan Olejniczak, will my thespian ability to an up-and-coming thespian and that thespian is: Ralph Wierzbinski. We, Mary Ann Szczechowski and Florence Kurpiewski, will our seats in Miss Halnon's home room to our Freshmen successors. I, Carolyn Trzaskowski, will my ability to eat in the cafeteria for four years and still graduate to any freshman who would like to try. It was a beautiful day, with just the faintest fragrance of autumn filling the air. Our two sponsor teachers, Miss Halnon and Mr. Pilarski, dispelled some of the fright that most of us felt. OCT OBER- Our first freshman party was held in the Library. The punch bowl held some strange fascination for the boys, most of them didn't leave it all after- noon! APRIL- Our first night party, the Freshman Dance! We were really proud to- night, as we got to dance until ten o'clock. Many of the girls were squired home by members of the class. MAY- Awards Day. Josephine Handler and Steve Horvath distinguished them- selves by receiving the D. A. R. awards for Citizenship. JUNE- The end of our freshman year. We really belong now! September, 1949 Dear Diary: We came back and found that our class has grown. We have many new students from Harrison and Oliver. We also added two new sponsor teach- ers, Mr. Halloran and Mr. Rogers. Some of our more athletic boys have gone out for football, and although they may not make varsity, we feel that they will contribute to a very sue- cessful season. MARCH- The Mikado ! How proud we are that D. Oleiniczak had one of the lead roles! Many of us participated in that big production. MAY- Our Sophomore Dance. We shall always carry with us the memory of this wonderful night. Everyone had a wonderful time. JUNE- The last day of school. Diary, is it possible that next year we'1l be Juniors? September, 1950 Dear Diary: Juniors! At last we are upperclassmen. It is hard to believe that we were once bewildered freshmen. NOVEMBER- Our football team, under the supervision of Sam Wegner, started rather slowly, but then surprised everyone by winning their last three games and tying a strong East Chicago Roosevelt team. Our annual class party, the Blue Jean Hop, was enjoyed by everyone who attended. We all wore blue jeans which made the night so much more fun because of the informal atmosphere. MARCH- The Glee Club is giving a Calendar Review . Many of our classmates are participating in the production. MAY- At last the long-awaited event arrived! Our Junior Prom, at which ap- proximately forty couples danced to the music of Ted Gallagan! lt was a cold and rainy day, but a beautiful night. Our first dramatic effort is over, A Date With Judy . Charleigh Wright, Dglgginia Eckenberger, Peter Pica, and Robert White had the leads. E- Our junior ollicers were Robert Hegedus, presidentg Florence Kurpiew- ski, vice-president, Victor Papai, secretary, Mary Ann Szczechowski, treas- urer. With much regret that our Junior year has come to an cnd, we :mow look, eagerly, towards our Senior Year. September, 1951 Dear Diary: Our last first day of school! Our three year effort was not in vain. We realize that, as the underclassmen look at us with envy in their eyes. At first, we probably maybe a little conceited, but that soon will wear off, as we start on the many activities that make up our Senior Year. NOVEMBER- Ned Vargo captained our football team to a season with six victories, two defeats, and one tie. We are very proud of our team, which was com- posed mainly of seniors. We chose as our senior play, Ever Since Eve . Jeanne Nagy, Norma Nagy, and Dan Olejniczak carried the leads. We played to a large crowd both nights, and we feel it was well worth all our hard effort and work. DECEMBER- Our basketball team, led by Al Cashaw, brought honor to our school by winning the Holiday Tournament over Adams. JANUARY- The Inter-City prom with the four High Schools combined, was a huge success. Many couples from Washington danced to the music of Mickey Isley. MARCH- The Glee Club, under the direction of Miss Barbara Unger, resented Rose of Algeria. Dan Olejniczak and Robert Hegedus had leadi in this very entertaining operetta. Many other seniors had minor parts and helped on the committees. MAY- Our Senior Prom was held at the Indiana Club with music by Ted Gal- lagan. This is a night to remember, our last prom as a class. This year, for the first time, the juniors and seniors had a combined prom. This seems to have made the evening more enjoyable. As the orchestra played the last number, we all knew we would never forget this night. JUNE- Our class officers this year were Harry Ganser, president: Victor Papai, vice-presidentg Nandor Vargo, secretary, George Zywert, treasurerg Clara Miller, historian. Now as we walk to the stage to get our diplomas, tears are in many of our eyes. Never again will we enter Washington as a class. Never again will our teachers praise us or reprimand us. Now we are entering a bigger school. The school which knows many heartaches and hardships - the adult world. But always this slogan will ring in our hearts, Ever Onward.
