The experience was all too short. But no one - audience or cast or committees - will forget it. For a long time they will remember the sweet dignity of Lillian Szabo and Frances Kopczynski in the role of Jane, the efficiency of Gertrude Levan and Phyllis Dhaene as Mrs. Fairfax, the housekeeper, the genuine little-girlishness of Mar- garet Arch and Dorothy Jaremba as Adele Varens, the real madness of Dorothy Rogowski and Joan Kilmer as Rochester's wife, the suave manliness of Pete Smith and Art Kalmar as Rochester, not to mention all the others who helped make the play a real success. All in all it was an exciting first event in this, the last year. Clark, Hammond Goshen ....... Mishawaka North Side Fort Wayn LaPorte ...... Won 9 - lost 9 Central ,,.. ,ae VU! Basketball Action Two or three times a week during the season, the Panther squad trots out on some northern Indiana backetball court and gives the rooters - friends or friendly enemies - all the excitement they can ask for. Their record was not one-sided this year, but no opponent ever made the mistake of rating them easy. They were too capable of taking home the favorites' scalps. The first squad was made up of five seniors, one junior, and four sophomores. Those seniors DePaepe, McGowan, Strozewski, Meier, and Klaybor - will naturally be missed next year, but the underclassmen on the team and the eager candidates on the Bee squad are all set to make Coach Holley forget them by proving that they can fill the big empty shoes. Best of luck! .dh JDE' EF r The Class History June,'l946. Dear Diary, Here it is June already and only the memories of the last year-our first at Washington-to take along with us into summer vacation! The year started off wonderfully, with many students from the surrounding grade schools entering as the Class of T949. Our sponsor teachers were Miss Miller, Miss Martindale, and Mr. Halloran. How shyly we started our social life-by having a party in the gyml lt was from 3:30 to 5:30 and we all had a good time, as we began to get acquainted with both teachers and students. ln November we held our election for class officers and chose Danny Piekarski as president. ln January the iunior highs sent us thirty-six students to be added to our ranks. Mr. Basker took charge of them. On March l came the second big so- cial event of the year, our first class dance, which was appropriately called Windy Rendezvous. The boys weren't quite so bashful now, as we had grown to become good friends, and we had a very successful evening. We are well on the way to a good start in W.H.S., with many of us partici- pating in both athletics and music. The Gondeliers given this spring was a big success - with the help of many students from the class of '49. At long last spring has came and with it vacation and the thought of coming back to W.H.S. next Sep- tember as sophomores! ln this way ends our first year of high school! June, 1947. Dear Diary, Another spring has rolled around. lt doesn't seem quite possible that our sopho- more year has slipped by. Only nine months ago we came back, ready for any- thing and rather smug at the thought of being sophomores. ln November we held our yearly election and chose Bill DePaepe to see us through the year. The year has been spiced with many interesting things, such as our two class dances, the musical review under the direction of Miss Chapman, many exciting athletic events, and our class picnic, which everyone will remember as a time of bruises and burning of both lingers and wienies and of walks through the woods that made us both foot-sore and filthy. Yes, it has been a very successful year for us and one that will be remembered for a long time in our own private Memory Lane. Now again it's spring and again we await next September, when we shall come back-as juniors! June, 1948. Dear Diary, .lust imagine-JUNIORSI Doesn't it sound wonderful -and wonderful it was as we entered school on that beautiful September day, filled with dreams of what lay ahead. Our football team had a very successful season, sparked by two members of our class, Dick Strozewski and Don Wachowiak. Don officially played center but his scoring record sounds like that of a backfield man! We proved that we had dramatic talent too by presenting as a class play the comedy Sis Perkins. lt was a great-and laughing -success. The operetta Firefly was also a success and many of our class had leading roles. Finally May came, and along with it, the long-awaited iunior prom. Wasn't it exciting, getting new formals and having our dates ask the color of our gowns so they would know the right kind of flowers to get? The big day was May fourteenth. The dance was at the Progress Club, with Carl Young furnishing the music. Before the year ended, we iuniors entertained the seniors at the annual tradi- tional tea in the library. Then came exams and new we look forward rather anx- iously to next September, when we will come back as high and mighty seniors. Diary, is it really possible that there is only one more year of high school life left? June, 1949. Dear Diary, With both happiness and regrets in our hearts we entered this last year in good ole' Washington High School. September was a busy month, with our rings coming in -how much fun it was to put them on for the first timel, class pictures being taken, and yearbook plans getting under way. When elections were held Bill DePaepe was again elected president, with Steve Lebiedzinski being chosen as vice-president to take over in January. We followed the football team in its first season under Mr. Wegner and cheered on our particular '49 stars - DePaepe, Strozewski, Klaybor, Varga, Rybak, Szucsits, Matuszak, the two Wachowiaks, Woodard, Pietrczak, and the long-suffering manager, Ed Rogers. ln November we were cheered by the pep and early success of the basketball team. December came and we enioyed our last Christmas assembly and our last Christmas vacation. I'hen came January and our first prom of the year. Wasn't it fun with the four schools combined? We're sure no one will forget that night at the Palais Roy- ale, at least not for a long, long time. And then there was the senior playl Miss Fortin selected Jane Eyre and a double cast presented two performances that were real successes. ln March came the annual musical review that meant for many of us the last time we'd attend rehearsals at Washington or know the thrill that comes when the final curtain goes down. The last weeks rolled around, with noon basketball, and volleyball, square danc- ing, cramming for tests, loafing in the halls. And then came the time for our last prom, held May 20 at the Erskine Country Club. Bobby Morris played and every- one enioyed himself, even though we all knew it was the last time we would be together at a prom. Now it is time for us to close this book of memories and to store it away with all the other treasures and precious gifts we have gathered along the way in our school days. We leave, hoping to live up to our and Washington's motto, Ever Onward. - Pllillis Dhaerle. The Prophecy Last night the seniors of 1949 gathered together for the last time before gradu- ation, at a farewell party in our gymnasium. For weeks the entertainment com- mittee had aroused our curiosity by telling us that something new and different would be-presented at the party. All the seniors and sponsors had said they would be there. The party started at 8:00 and we were all having a wonderful time dancing, standing in small groups, and discussing the mysterious thing that was about to happen. At 9:30 Steve Lebiedzinski, our class president, got up on a ladder at one end of the gym to make an announcement. Here was the big surprise . . . Doro- thea De Meyer, who is well known for making accurate predictions, for two days had been working in a dark, dark room on our dark and dreary future. Steve went on to say that if everyone would be quiet and gather around so they could hear, Dorothea would read the fortunes aloud. They would be drawn from a large paper hat on the refreshment table. At this point, everyone became quiet and Dorothea started by saying, Ladies and gentlemen-and classmates, you may now quit wondering about the years ahead. I have uncovered the best, and the worst, that awaits you. Listen: Some of you are going to spend many more years of your lives at W.H.S. But don't worry - not as pupils.
