Don ' t let the flame go out! Seventeen or eighteen years ago, when you were born into this rapidly moving world, a flame was lighted within you—a desire to learn about your new world. Think back to the days when you were a child and to those many questions you asked. Where do the stars go in the daytime? What makes the wheel go around? The curiosity of a young child is seemingly endless. I suspect that this inner flame is about the same size in all of us on the first day, but as time passes, something different happens to each individual For some, there is more fuel added, and the flame grows brighter as the years pass; but for others, the flame gradually dies down, so that there is just the slightest flicker remaining. No matter how small the flame becomes, don ' t let it go out. Nurture it; keep it alive! As long as there is the faintest spark, there is a chance it will burn brightly again It needs only the proper fuel. During the past twelve years, we, your teachers, have tried to provide that fuel, exper¬ iences which would keep your flame burning brightly. We have succeeded in some cases and failed miserably in others. Regardless of the outcome, it now becomes your individual responsibility to keep the inner light aglow, for as long as there is a future, there is hope that the flame will burst forth again No one has expressed the importance of keeping the flame alive more adequately than Albert Schweitzer in his Memoirs of Childhood: Sometimes our light goes out but is blown again into flame by an en¬ counter with| another human being Each of us owes the deepest thanks to those who have rekindled this inner light. For each of you, that encounter with another human being may be just around the corner, so . . . don ' t let the flame go out! 26
