Welcome Week set the year off to a perfect start. It all began with an auditorium that included the cheerleaders, the Millermates, Dr. DeLapp, and the dedication of the “Washburn Miller.” In order to help arouse some competitive spirit among the sophomores, a contest was held between all the classes. The sophomores proved themselves when they won. In order to help the sophomores to become more at ease at Washburn, there was a senior servant day where sophomores were able to buy seniors for 25 cents and use them for their personal attendant for the day. The week came to an exciting end when the football team trounced West 39-6. “Special Sounds” played for the dance that night. The sophomores couldn’t help but grasp on, or be dragged into, the Spirit of Washburn. 10

HOMECOMING Despite the gloomy weather that hovered over Minneapolis on October 7, Homecoming raised the students’ spirits. The Homecoming auditorium helped spark the excitement that led to the suspenseful crowning of Julie Stake and Dave Shepherd. Although many students were disappointed by the postponment of the game, moods brightened as students danced to music played by “Streeter,” that night. The Millers were finally able to play the long awaited game against Edison on Monday. Unfortunately, the weather was not any better than on the previous Friday ... unfortunately, that is, for Edison. The Mighty Millers snowballed their way to a 7-6 victory in an inch of snow.
