WAHIAN ’78 VOLUME 51 WASHBURN HIGH SCHOOL MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA ■■ Who am I? I am me. In the classroom I am a scholar, Seeking, finding, asking why. In the lab I am a scientist, Serious and inquisitive. On the sidelines I am a spectator, Enthusiastic and spirited. On the field I am an athlete, Tense and determined. - Unknown 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS Hi SEMI-FORMAL On March 12,1977, Washburn held its annual Semi-Formal Dance at the Athletic Club in downtown Minneapolis. One hundred fifty couples danced to music played by “Masquerade.” Many students either rested in the comfortable lounge or indulged in the variety of foods and the refreshing punch. It was a memorable evening that ended much too quickly. On with the dance! Let joy be unconfined: No sleep till morn, when Youth and Pleasure meet To chase the glowing Hours with flying feet. -Lord Byron PROM The 1977 Prom was very special. It marked the beginning of a new tradition for Wash-bum — the Semi-Formal Prom. It was also the first independent Prom held in five years. The 188 couples who attended made it a success. Inside the ballroom suite of the Calhoun Beach Manor, students danced to original music performed by Mind and Matter. The dance floor and refreshment area opened on to a large balcony facing the lake, which was used for picture taking and socializing. The evening of May 7 was a perfect night for Prom. It was a night that will remain in the minds of all who went for a long time. Welcome Week set the year off to a perfect start. It all began with an auditorium that included the cheerleaders, the Millermates, Dr. DeLapp, and the dedication of the “Washburn Miller.” In order to help arouse some competitive spirit among the sophomores, a contest was held between all the classes. The sophomores proved themselves when they won. In order to help the sophomores to become more at ease at Washburn, there was a senior servant day where sophomores were able to buy seniors for 25 cents and use them for their personal attendant for the day. The week came to an exciting end when the football team trounced West 39-6. “Special Sounds” played for the dance that night. The sophomores couldn’t help but grasp on, or be dragged into, the Spirit of Washburn. 10 WELCOME WEEK HOMECOMING Despite the gloomy weather that hovered over Minneapolis on October 7, Homecoming raised the students’ spirits. The Homecoming auditorium helped spark the excitement that led to the suspenseful crowning of Julie Stake and Dave Shepherd. Although many students were disappointed by the postponment of the game, moods brightened as students danced to music played by “Streeter,” that night. The Millers were finally able to play the long awaited game against Edison on Monday. Unfortunately, the weather was not any better than on the previous Friday ... unfortunately, that is, for Edison. The Mighty Millers snowballed their way to a 7-6 victory in an inch of snow. KING DAVE COLLEEN KATIE AND AND CHARLIE JIM KATHY AND DAVE SUSIE AND TOM QUEEN JULIE 13 14 WE’LL GRIND THEIR BONES TO MAKE OUR BREAD 18 This year’s Sadie could have been billed as “The Dance That Almost Wasn’t.’’ Due to a prolonged football season, the dance had to be rescheduled from November 11 to November 18, the day of basketball preview. The dauntless Grist staff found that to be only a small obstacle and proceeded with staging one heckuva kneeslappin’ footstompin’ ev-’nin. Girls agonized for weeks over one question ... “Who should I ask?” and guys over another ... “Who’s gonna ask me?” The girls finally made their decisions, roped their guys and dragged them to the dance. In fear of being jailed, guys clung to their date’s arms while they played games, had their picture taken, danced, and even when they got married! 19 CAST Abby Brewster ........... The story centers around their nephew Mortimer, who comes home one day to find a victim in the window seat. As Mortimer tries to deal with this dilemma a long lost nefarious nephew returns home with, you guessed it, another body. The sisters aren’t phased by this however, and with the help of their brother (who thinks he’s Teddy Roosevelt) they bury him in the “Panama Canal” along with 13 other “yellow fever” victims. The play ends with Teddy being committed to a home with his loyal sisters accompanying him. This superb production was directed by Robert Krause. With a fresh layer of new fallen snow on the ground, two hundred rowdy seniors left Washburn’s parking lot for Camp Ihduhapi. After the long ride down “suicide hill” it was hard to distinguish snow covered faces. If you didn’t take to sliding, there was skating and broomball. By the end of the evening everyone had gathered inside for square dancing or warming by the fire. 22 SENIOR SNOW PARTY SNO-WEEK January 30 - February 3 was the highlight of the long, cold winter months. Sno-Week began with a roaring pepfest that included: the tug of wars between the classes ... and the sexes, the Millermen and their “fine” kicks, the Blue Tri raffle of the sport’s captains, and the crowning of the legging and guerning royalty: Tom Coleman and Jean Ellis. Added to the week’s events were the Powderpuff Football game, Senior Servant Day for juniors, Millwheels, and a basketball game. The Sno-Dance ended the fun-filled week with lifted spirits. MILLWHEELS The 1978 Millwheels was the “best technical show ever held at Washburn.” Mr. Krause, aided by student directors Mark Carlson and Paul Harmon, organized this year’s exceptional talent into a superb program. The auditorium was filled both nights with people dazzled by performances by Dick Jones, Camilla Glatty, Kama Eastlund, the “tall girls,” Joe Otto, Moffatt’s Band, Charlie Brown, Pica and Sovell, and Alan Wheeler, to name a few. The show ended in a star-filled room as Paul Letofsky played his version of “Stairway to Heaven.” 27 FACETS OF WASHBURN LIFE 28 CALENDAR OF EVENTS August 29 Classes Begin February 1- 2 Millwheels September 5- 9 Welcome Week Sno-Week Dance 7 First Donut Dunk 3 Carnations Delivered 8 Senior Servant Day 10 Twin City Basketball Game Won 9 Dance 11 Energy Break October 7 Homecoming 13-17 President’s Holiday 21-22 Teacher’s Convention 20 Region 5AA Championship Bas- 25 Open House 24 ketball Game Won 26 City Title Won in Football March 2- 4 State Basketball Tournament 27 Choir Concert 11 Semi-Formal 31 Halloween 13 Tri III Begins November 1 Twin City Football Title Won 20-24 Spring Break 9 Orchestra Concert April 11 Pop Concert 11 State Football Championship 19 Senior Banquet Won May 5 Prom 18 Sadie 17 Orchestra Concert 24 Thanksgiving 25 Choir Concert 28 Tri II Begins 29 Memorial Day December 14-15 “Arsenic and Old Lace” June 2 WAHIAN Distribution 16 Winter Boogie 9 Last Day Seniors 21 Winter Music Program 12 Commencement 23 Winter Break Begins 12 All-Night Party January 25 Senior Snow Party 13 Last Day Underclass 30 Snow-Week Begins 30 Roland R. Advisors Armilln Walsh and Karen Johnson Prompted by the return of Blue Tri last year, Orange Tri was re-introduced for underclass girls. Based on the purpose of community and school service, the girls worked on a number of fundraising and social projects at Washburn. During the year they held a donut dunk, collected for the Santa Anonymous program, and distributed candy canes to the faculty at Christmas time. Orange Tri has made a fine comeback and provided a way for underclass girls to become an integral part of the school and community. ROW 1: V. Pres. P. Walsh. Sec. J. Chin ROW 2: Public Relation R. Whether it be the incoming sophomores or kids new to the area, Reach was there to help out. Last fall, Reach provided a tour of the school for all interested students. They also sponsored a banquet for the new people. FOREIGN STUDENTS This year Washburn participated in the Student International Service Exchange (SISE) and the American Scandinavian Student Exchange (ASSE) along with the well-known AFS program. The exchange students came from Brazil, Sweden, and Finland. These programs are beneficial because Washburn students get a chance to learn about life in other countries while the foreign students see what living in the United States is like. ROW 1: K. The season ran from October to February with practices and meets about twice a week. A Twin City Metro League was started to increase the number of meets held within the immediate Twin City Area high schools. Two students from the Washburn team won trophies for Best Speaker and First Runner up. The team as a whole tied for first place in this league. The debaters received certificates for consolation winners in the Region 5AA finals. J. Waldfogel, T. David, J. Holtzman, J. While working toward our conception of an exciting book we saw the school in a unique way. Every day a different aspect of Washburn passed before our eyes. We hope this WAHIAN gives a realistic picture of our school. Only if this was accomplished will everyone have a genuine memory of this year. Many people deserve recognition for their help in bringing this book together. My thanks to the talented staff for their diligence and patience. I am grateful to faculty and administration for their tolerance and cooperation during picture schedules. David Bank Studios took most of the senior pictures and many candids and gave valuable help and advice. A warm thanks to you, Mr. Johnson, for your lively attitude and reassuring spirit. An excellent assemblage of singing talents formed Washburn’s six choral groups. They entertained at school concerts and in the community during the year. Jazz singers and Madrigals are smaller groups of students within Chora-liers. They experimented with Spanish, Hebrew, and German music. All of these groups appeared on WCCO-TV in the late fall. Girl’s Choir worked with many types of music including Aleatory, in which each person sings notes by chance. Golliards is a smaller group within Girls’ Choir that practiced after class. As a preparatory group, the Sophomore Singers learned and reviewed the fundamentals of choral singing. HOW 1: L. Anderson, C. Gersdorf, J. Steinke, K. I awson, L. Cutter. ROW 2: M. Mahoney, C. The season began with a non-conference schedule, which was highlighted by a trip to Grand Forks, North Dakota. The team split the two game trip against the defending North Dakota co-champions, but more importantly they came home with a “team” attitude. Led by leading scorer, Captain Nick Olive, the team showed their new spirit by knocking down their first seven conference opponents and tying Roosevelt in overtime. Unfortunately, for the rest of the season, their best shot was only a tie, despite out shooting their opponents in nearly every game. The squad went into the regional play offs determined to equal the achievement of the other Miller teams. Taking a 3-0 lead in the third period against Blake, they relaxed ever so slightly, and their dreams were shattered 4-3 at the hands of an inexperienced but explosive team. ROW 1: Capt. J. Sutton. R. Coach Dick Thompson remarked, “This is the best collection of athletes I’ve ever coached.” The team won their games with balanced scoring. All five starters averaged in double figures throughout the year. The Millers rolled through their first two region games but had to hold on tight to defeat a strong North High team in the semifinals. In the region finals the team showed its stamina by taking a fourth quarter lead to win the game and earn a berth in the State tournament. In the first tournament elimination game the Millers showed their poise by overcoming a three point deficit with eleven seconds to go. The credit for the win goes to Wally “Streetball” Hicks who sand a seven foot shot at the buzzer. The next night the Millers weren’t quite as lucky ... the shot at the buzzer rolled off the rim. The team struggled its way through the third place game as starters fouled out and were benched with injuries. But next year’s team came off the bench and clinched another thrilling last-second victory to wrap up one of the most exciting basketball years at Washburn. with a support that few classes have. Was it because of the new, rowdie Spirit Committee, or the return of the male cheerleaders, or the pride we take in our winning teams? Or was it just these people, the guinea pigs for Ramsey’s all-ninth grade program, that gave us the closeness we’ve felt this year? Ever since ninth grade, we’ve been building a uni ty in our class — we’ve worked, danced, struggled, and laughed together and really made something of these years, for ourselves and for the school. All the ’78 buttons, Washburn sweatshirts, and activities going on let the world know that “We’re from Washburn, couldn’t be prouder!’’ The standards we’ve set for Washburn’s future classes are high. Let’s hope they meet the challenge. “ ... but it’s the laughter that we remember whenever we remember the way we were.” The WAHIAN staff has chosen to dedicate this year’s hook to our principal, I)r. Roland R. DeLapp. We have seen his white shock of hair and friendly face from the lunchroom to athletic events and all the while he has had time to talk with the students. He is a principal who understands his job, combining his abilities with an honest concern for kids. Dr. DeLapp is in touch with the times and holds an intimate knowledge of problems at Washburn.
