Math: The World Of Precision Prove that which is true Mathematically-inclined Washburnites toiled many hours this year, puzzled by mathematical problems. The typical sophomore studied standard geometry or elementary algebra. An advanced geometry class was offered for the more mathematically talented sophomores. Standard and advanced algebra-trigonometry confronted the junior mathematicians, who struggled through such things as the maze of logarithms. Some bewildered seniors tried Senior math while others were privileged,” according to Mr. Sverdrup, to work various problems in the standard or accelerated math analysis courses. A new innovation to the math department was the presence of a computer. This year Washburn introduced many difficult but rewarding courses in the math department. The confident smile

Language Breaks World Barriers This year the language department continued its efforts to equip Washburn students for the internationalism of today. Mr. Dunn and Miss Ryan, a new “professor’ from Africa, tried to encourage their students to be more proficient in spoken French as well as the traditional grammar. Mr. Rutherford and Mrs. Helvig, who teaches at Ramsey but has one class at Washburn, and Mr; Austin instruct the large, enthusiastic group of Spanish students. Herr Dills and Frau Ackerman struggle to rid their new students of their German accents acquired from years of watching television. The Latin classes have dwindled over the years, but Latin students are a hardy lot under Mrs. Beran’s tutelage.
