Task force enlightens Washburnitcs. . And the British landed here in 1763 Mr. Weis expounds on Freud The Social Studies Department underwent a period of great change and innovation this year. Sophomores studied world history with special emphasis on anthropology. In junior classes. Afro-American history was stressed. Juniors also examined United States history concerning wars, violence, and great presidential elections. Again this year Mr. Daniels taught an advanced placement history course, allowing some students to obtain college credits. Seniors took the standard government and economic courses. The presidential election added highlights to the studies as did discussions on human relations led by Task Force representatives. The election study provided seniors with a host of guest speakers. These included representatives from the Democratic, Republican, Socialist, and American Independent parties. A debate between Congressman Donald Fraser and Mr. Harmon T. Ogdahl gave twelfth graders a good example of political confrontation. Some elective courses offered to seniors were philosophy, psychology, and sociology. The Social Studies Department’s varied curriculum gave students a broader scope with which to face the challenges of the world. 21
