ENGLISH DEPARTMENT AND LIBRARY WDRK TOGETHER , . ,A-,,sw,. . .. ' Library provides vast information to Washburn students. Busy English students read about the seventeenth century. A student of Shakespeare recites Dagger Speech beside Eliza- , bethan theatre. The English department at Washburn, headed by Mrs. Wells, encompasses both grammar and literature. The sophomores study American liter- ature including such authors as Mark Twain, Ed- gar Allen Poe, and Stephen Crane. Juniors spend an entire semester studying Shakespeare. Sen- iors are introduced to such great authors as Chaucer, Milton, Jonson, and Spenser during the study ot English literature. Grammar is included in all three years ot English. Our school library is an excellent source of jn- formation tor the students ot Washburn. lt pro- vides research material tor term papers and class proiects, Under the watchful supervision ot Miss Woodbeck and Mrs. Benson, the library is etticientlyrun and well managed. The present Guthrie links to our Shakespeare past.

L' px SOCIAL STUDIES LINK THE PAST WITH THE PRESENT History captures the attention of these Washburn students. Social studies give students background in the why's ot past events and trends. Students are taught to apply this valuable knowledge of human affairs to the present and the future, they are taught to learn from history. Sophomores absorb the intricacies of their nation's and the vvorld's past. Juniors begin again with Amer- ican history in a detailed study of the developments and trends in domestic and foreign policy that have brought us to the present day. Senior history is the absorbing investigation ot modern government, eco- nomics, and current events. The hand must communicate our thought. ,yup Jil KX ..
