K ,R As we walked down the aisle on that momentous night in June. memo- ries ot many events crowded intoiiiour minds: some were pleasant: some were sad. Recalling the road which we had travelled, we could almost see the footprints which had led us up to graduation. The footprints were of many sizes and shapes: they had been made by many ditterentfkinds of shoes, We remembered the shiny oxlords and graceful pumps which had been worn to our first formal: we remembered the comfortable loafers which had carried us through many months of school: we remembered. too. the spiked football shoes and the grimy tennis: had helped us to victory iriinumerous athletic contestsiialncl iwe also remembered the black and navy-blue shoes on the feet of every teacher. The graduation exercises were almost over. As we walked slowly down the steps to receive our diplomaijwe knew that the path behind us was packed and worn: we realizedg-that we must go on. Walking out the door. we cast a lance at our shoeszitthe shoes were carr in us out of school S Y now-out of childhood and into life. !21Mffff1M-1,vfw'f7'4'V'V T'U6'7f 'V'LW '! 2 QM ppmyf x0j',wufZjo737fd7'M22f6 zzfiiffxiiwggyii gfmw 11,11 ffmw Jillfw ,fp-ywfjaoww f X7 ,UA-U ,Diaz AJ, N bfi' up PM aj,jf4,f,g,f,L44,, 4MauMfA?Li of J' PV ,uf f5'ff, f Z2,Z7Q9 full Al jawdglzbnne, gflgoqi Appl pf a , w' if M if WJQM? E351 CLASS The home room played a leading role in the life of every sophomore, especially during the tirst week of the school year. lt was in the home room that the new student was first initiated into the routine of high school lite. At first. there were seemingly end- less forms to till out under the friendly guidance of the home room teacher, who willingly answered any and all questions. After the first few weeks. home room life lapsed into a monotony of hearing the bulletin read each OF 1955 Tuesday and Thursday. banking every Tuesday. sending a representative to the Student Council Meeting every Thursday, and reading the Grist at 2:55 every other Thursday afternoon. Each member of the home room was constantly persecuted by money-mad collectors for such things as Grist and Wahian subscriptions, Red Cross and Community Chest donations. and supplementary fees. ln the time lapse between each collector, we found time to do a little studying. Her friendly advice helped many girls in selecting their programs, colleges. and vocations, She also helped the seniors with gradua- tion details. The National Honor Society in the torthcoming years will have Miss Christensen as their new adviser. Mr. Evenscn was a new addition to Washburn this year. taking Merv Dillner's position as Boys' Counselor. Mr. Evenson has been a great help to the Washburn students aiding them in their many and varied problems. Mrs, Belanger. the school nurse: Mrs. Chapman. the speech correctional teacher: Miss Donahue, the visiting teacher all played an important part in mal:- ing our school run more etliciently. English was required all three years. The sopho- mores learned ot American literature, the juniors learned about the immortal Shalcespeare. and the seniors ot English literature. Remembered with bit- ter memory are the minimum essential tests given at the end ot every semester. These tests contained all that should have been learned in English. Any- one not passing the test was put in a remedial Eng- lish class. The Social Science Department was a very im- portant part of our curriculum. American history was required for juniors, and modern problems was a re- quired senior subject: world history was an optional course. Through these courses, gains were made tor a better working knowledge of our country's gov- ernment and world affairs. Fair is foul and so is my Shalrcspcarc grade. They not only enjoyed themselves, but at the time they were contributing to a worthy cause. A Jael: and Jill were chosen from each grade. and each couple was given a pail to collect money for the Red Cross. The pail luggers were Di John- son and Bill Moore, sophomoresq Penny Crawford and Gary Sachs, iuniors: and Barbara Hall and John Osander, seniors. At the end ot the evening. the lowly sophs rose to the heights by having collected the most money. Di and Bill were each given a box ot candy for their supreme effort. Money was also collected in the home rooms dur' ing the weelc preceding the dance. Each day a teacher was selected to carry the Red Cross Pail through the halls. and the students responded by throwing their coins at these fortunate persons. Miss Peterson. Mr. Smith, and Miss Thompson were thought to be especially colorful pail carriers. Part of this money went toward filling chests of clothes and school supplies which were sent to the Red Cross. Through the generosity of thc Washburn students, both in home rooms and at the Red Cross dance, one hundred and ninety dollars was donated to a very worthy cause. What did you do in school today? Capping a season filled with ups and downs the Washburn football squad upset a rugged highly favored, South team in the final game. The Millers tasted defeat in the season's opener with Henry. The hard running Patriots had too much power for the green Washburn eleven. There was good defensive play. but mistalres proved the downfall. At Southwest. the team showed their deter- mination and spirit by tying the Indians in a hard fought battle. It was an exciting game 'co the final gun. The Homecoming game with Marshall also ended in a deadlock. The Millers had many touchdown opportunities snuffed out by bacl brealcs. The Cardinals' fine passing attack offset the Millers' running game. North, city champ, and Central. runner-up. proved too strong for the orange. Vocational, in the next to the last game, surprised Washburn by scoring two fast TD's. Washburn scored twice, but were not able to overcome Vocational's one touchdown lead. Rugged defense and spirit was the hey to their success at South. The Millers upset the favored Tigers in a well-earned victory. Although this season's team did not have an impressive record of wins, the school should be proud of the boys for their fine sports- manship and clean play. lj 65 I Fam ,urns rang, L. ta R.: rapprfrg, Abram, Lrcbermsf., Mogul, Purmrm, awry, sundzr-. manure, L. Washburn's propaganda min- istry. This odd behavior, of course. is caused by the fact that the Grist staff endeavors to publish a newspaper every two weeks. This feat was usually accomplished. through much effort and personal sacrifice on the part of the page editors, who graciously consented to leave their floating bridge game for a few frenzied hours. A few inches of electrifying copy were written. inspiring titles were slapped on them, and the whole mess was rushed down to the printers. The game was then resumed. True to tradition, the Grist Staff managed to have several worthwhile scandals this year. and in an effort to be distinctive the paper tried an intel- lectual approach to several sides of the news. ln case you're interested in knowing who to blame for leaving your name out of That story, here is a run-down of the editorial staff. Dick lverson, Charlie Edwards. and Judy Nyvall handled the sports news. On the business staff Sherry Cornell was kept busy exchanging alumni, and Patsy Powell did an excellent iob of editing editorials. Stevie Brown managed the office very capably, while John Solum and Jerry Bergfallc, co-copy editors, each spent most of his time deleting commas the other had inserted. Mary Lou Kriechbaum, faithful to her duties as circulating manager, tried valiantly to install a ven- tilation system, but she was consistently out-voted by 'flight-Wadi' Hardy. business manager.
