He serves to tie the school in with the com- munity. His ofhce is always open to the student who seeks to solve some personal problem. He feels that VVashburn should teach the student the practical side of life, as Well as the academic side. Mr. lanes supervises student-teacher relations. He sees that the school is run efficiently. Included in his many duties are talking to students in difficulty, ad- vising of National Honor Society, and serving as business adviser for the Wahian, as well as other organizations. The Counselors help students adjust their programs. apply for scholarships, and determine their vocations. They also give advice to students with personal and family problems. Keeping the records for so many students entails a great deal of work. Washburn's competent otiice stall takes care of all the paper Work including the keep- ing of attendance records. and also acts as secretaries to the administration. Each morning the kitchen brigade assembled in the kitchen to brew the noon meal. They worked hard to feed the hungry students. The ianitors worked COUNSFLORS: Mr, Dillner. DIRE TORS The lihrary is the heart of the school hecause it supplies texthooks and supplementary material to all departments. It houses I5,000 hooks, pamphlets, mag- azines, records, Iilmstrips, and this year, the docu- ments from the freedom train. Materials for senior joh conferences were also collected. The lihrarians are always ready to help those who need materials for term themes, history exams, and hook reports. A two year commercial course is offered for all those who plan to enter the husiness world. The ofhce and secretarial training classes learn to operate the switch hoard. Some girls get further training hy working as a secretary to Mrs. Wells or Mr. Dillner. A special typing class is offered seniors to aid them in typing themes. Few suhjects are of more practical use to girls than cooking and sewing. Throughout the school year, the foods classes are called upon to prepare refreshments for various occasions. The girls order and prepare the food under the supervision of Mrs. Keegan, who replaced Miss O'Connor. A knowledge of materials, patterns, and colors is gained in the sewing classes. Washhurn also has the specialized faculty members such as the nurse, visiting teacher, remedial and speech correction teachers. COMMERCIAL: Miss Tliompson, Miss Stevenson, Miss Nash. LUNCHROOM: Miss McCune. Miss Fanning, Mrs. Hoskins. Mrs. IVerrell, Mrs. Peterson, Mrs. Speer. COOKING CLASS: Tweed. Berg. Parks, Iensen. Procter. Hurley. O'Connor, Patrick, Davis. The English department tries to give an oppor- tunity to develop one's self through creative and prac- tical expression. Some means of doing this are through speech, modern drama, and Writing. Minimum essen- tials tests are given to teach correct usage. During the three years, a student learns something ahout Amer- ican and English literature, drama, and journalism. Those interested in writing join Quill club. The background of almost every suhject has some relation to science. However, without math science can't live. Not only is math used in everyday life, hut it is one of the tools we must have to go on to higher learning and to make a success of husiness. Part of the trigonometry class visited an engineering company this year to learn how mathematics is put into practice. Four foreign languages are offered at Washlntiriiz French, German, Spanish, and Latin. Besides learn- ing the grammar of these languages, students study the geography, history, and songs of the country. A knowledge of the language and culture of a country promotes hetter understanding among nations. Boys who want to learn how to Work With their hands may take courses in mechanical drawing or woodwork. This year the woodwork classes made the boards for the hockey rink. The art department seeks to help the individual express himself. Through art one is familiarized with IiNCil.lSH: Mulligan. NYells, Carlson, Horns, Cioyns. Cflaeson. Basford. Tyrholm, Young. Keyes. M.X'I'll: Alwin. Sunde, Minty. jackson, Olson. Morrison. I-ANCiUAGI'1: Laird, Clear. Herglund, Utnison. SHOP: Lee. Cnnninghiiln. materials and methods of painting. lt gives him a hobby and a means of service to the school and the various clubs. This year one class gave a program on television. Last, but not least, the classes try to find potential talent. Some of the most talented are award- ed scholarships. Music, like art is one way for students to express themselves. The annual Christmas Chorus and Spring Sing have become a tradition. Students who enjoy playing musical instruments may play in the band or orchestra. Students are given an understanding of the scien- tihc age in which we live through studying biology, botany, physics, and chemistry so they can enjoy life free from superstition. Three boys took the Westing- house Scholarship exam. Richard Stallard Won the Bausch-Lomb medal. The botany department raises plants in the spring. The atomic model display fea- turing the triangle was one of the high points of the season in chemistry. Physical education is required in all three years. ln the eleventh and twelfth grades, girls have an oppor- tunity to join tumbling or folk dancing classes. It is very important to learn how people live and what they do in order to understand World problems. Through history and modern problems students gain an understanding of economies so they may run the nation intelligently in the future. The modern prob- lem classes sponsor job conferences in order that seniors may sensibly choose a future vocation. ART and MUSIC: Super, Oberg, 'l'i'owbridge, Bolewine. SCIENCIC: Roder. Pulyer, Lowry. Reque, limerson. GYM: Ross. Tburstoii, Larsen, Bowen. SOCIAL STUIDIICS: Alwin. Curtis, Lindstedt, Halyorson, Peterson Hoard, Smith, Goodson. Seniors OAS Seymour Druskin, Prcsidentg Carolyn Robinson, Trcasurerg Noni Gillham, Secretaryg Gerry Eisclc. Vice-President. Senior Officers Seymour Druskin, who was one of the three foot- ball captains and one of two editors of the Grist, was no doubt relieved to Hnd he was the only president for the class of '52. Between his other jobs including discus throwing for the track team, and those already mentioned, Sez managed to entertain his English class with his humor, eat pizza pie, and generally be a good Ioef' Having the cutest smile in the school was a valu- able asset to Noni Gillham, the secretary of the '52 class. Noni was the center of interest at the 1951 Homecoming game as its pretty queen. She was always complaining of being hungry while she was slaving away in Mr. Pulver's chemistry class. Every- one agreed that Noni was tops. Gerry Eisele, the able Veep, gained his first recog- E121 nition as ''Kissable-Lips-Fosterf' a tag received from the Ninth Grade Class Play, A Date With Iudyf' He also stole many a female heart as the janitor in the Senior Class Play. Gerry was the chairman and master of ceremonies at the Leadership Conference. A born athlete, he excelled on the football and track teams. The G. A. A. surely couldn't have gotten along without Geraldine's active membership. Carrie Robinson, following in the steps of her brother, lim, was treasurer of the Senior Class. Be- sides counting pennies, Carrie found time for many school activities. She was npeucil-pushern for French Club and was W3ShbLlfl1,S representative to Girls' State in her junior. Her classmates agreed she made a swell miser-fNote to style conscious girls-Carrie made most of her own clothesj. THE TCW Voledicforions cmcl Scflufoforicms Row One: Gilbert, Grouse, Campbell, Mans. E541 HOW Voriefy Nighf Under the direction of Lynn Iiehrman and Mr. Rohert Krause, the modern drama classes presented the hrst annual Variety Night, March 7, 1952. The show was an elaboration of the talent show presented hy the National Honor Society on March 5 for a school auditorium. Several choruses were added including: Opening Chorus, Ladies of the Mop, Park Chorus, Charleston Line, and the Finale. Individual acts were also added. The show received many compliments from the parents of the communi- ty for its smoothness and professional quality-an out- standing trihute to any high school production. All this would not have heen possihlc without Lynn Behrman. Lynn came to Vlfashhurn from Indianapo- lis, Indiana. Four years ago, she started out hy help- ing to write and direct a musical production in her high school. Since then she has directed four shows, and has proven herself a top notch director. Lynn also made a hit as an actress with a role in the class play as Woody, Agatha Reed's sarcastic secretary. Our second year has given to us both a wider curricular program and a greater opportunity for advancement. Three new subjects were introduced to us this year. We learned to ulovew Shakespeare. to appreciate the newspaper from jour- nalism, and to become better citizens through our studies in American History. Also we were intro- duced to extra-curricular activities of all sorts. The boys were given a chance to become active in Hi-Y groups and in athletics. The girls took an interest in Blue Tri and U.C. groups. A few of the leaders who have come forth from our class are Steve Lieberman in Student Council, Brad Iones in football, Priscilla Pierce in school activi- ties, Stevie Brown in Blue Tri, and Iohn Osander in Hi-Y. With time we hope to produce more. t 2 Row Our: Bearer, Bachman. Campbell, Sccyf lrcas.g Mr. Lee. Solberg. Pres.: Osandt-r. Y. Prcs.: Moore. Kon' Two: Zack. Hong. Bcrgc. litem, I Anderson. Tuttle. French songs, leg- ends, and dramatizations were given in a true native manner. Then, as typical Parisian refreshments were served, the celebration was climaxed by the entrance of Pere Noel with gifts for all. The adviser and backbone of those fascinating and li 6-l 3 interesting meetings was Mlle. Gear. She was aided by Iudy Grouse, President, Theo. Ganschow, Vice President, Herb Richardson, Treasurer, and Carrie Robinson, Secretary. The new oHicers, with Herb as President, began their term at the annual French breakfast, February 1, 1952. When need arises, Mr. Fleenor calls a meeting and pains are taken to arrive at the best possible solution, generally approved by all. The problems in question usually concern a matter of athletic policy either at 'VVashburn or city wide. Rarely does the coach receive the well-earned rec- ognition for his donations and patience. When the chips are down, itls only the coach who has the un- dying faith in his team. So here's tribute to the best coaches in the cityl The captains of the various teams are chosen by the teammates and coaches on the basis of athletic ability and leadership. All captains are members of the Boys' Athletic Board and work with the coaches in solving any arising issues pertaining to athletics, either at VVashburn or other Minneapolis schools. These captains were your leaders for the 1952 sea- son. Their Fighting spirit, reflected among team- members helped account for the victory which we had in all phases. Boskefboll Sparked by the brilliant offensive play of Ted Stephens and the tough defense of Bud Moll and Frank Bachman, Washhurn's basketeers ended the conference season in fourth place with six victories and four defeats. Ted won all-district honors and was the second highest scorer in the league with 162 points. He also set a new city free throw record by making 60 out of X2 shots for a .732 record. The opening game of the season found the Rossmen trouncing Marshall 52 to 42. Ted scored 19 points and Iere Briggs 20 points to lead the Millers. Likewise, the Orange defeated West in the following game. Iere and Ted pounded in 38 points between them. A cold Miller quint and a hot Henry team com- bined to hand the Orange their first defeat even though co-captains Dick Gunderson and Ray Mikle- thun pumped in nine points each to lead a third period rally. The Rossmen easily topped Central, only to lose to Vocational by six points. Ted counted 18 points in both games while Iim Vieburg found him- self and swished in 15 against the Pioneers. Pep 'em up, Rauf Slzmfe em' cz lzclfzful, lwo bits! Give iz to me, fella! Trying for an upset victory over North, the Millers played their hearts out only to lose in the last seconds by two points. At Williams Arena the Orange and Blue eked out Southwest and South. ln the South- west game, Ray and Frank duplicated scores, each counting ten points. Ted hit for 25 and Ray for 15 to clinch the Tiger game. In the District playoff the Millers stalled a win over Central and then lost to Voca- tional in the semi-hnals.
