C Perhaps it is during Indian Summer that we are most aware of mem- ories of the Redman. When Minnetonka resembles a giant mirror, and the pungent odor of burning Hrewood floats on the hazy twilight air, the spirit of Hiawatha lives again. Memories arise of the Sioux tribe whose mighty Chieftain, Cloudman, first welcomed the Pond brothers to the Sioux village situated between Lake Calhoun and Harriet. Here, in their colorful village with its teepees, and birchbark canoes on the beautiful Minnehaha Creek, and their color- ful head regalia, the Hrst lndians were baptized in Minnesota. In working on the 1940 Wahian the editors have found that Minnesota, Indian Country, will never be again, but the Redman's spirit will never leave us.
