But their memory livetb 011 your bills Their baptlsm 011 your shores Your everlasting rivers speak Their dialect of jfore. -LYDIA HUNTLEY SIGOURNEY. C Perhaps it is during Indian Summer that we are most aware of mem- ories of the Redman. When Minnetonka resembles a giant mirror, and the pungent odor of burning Hrewood floats on the hazy twilight air, the spirit of Hiawatha lives again. Memories arise of the Sioux tribe whose mighty Chieftain, Cloudman, first welcomed the Pond brothers to the Sioux village situated between Lake Calhoun and Harriet. Here, in their colorful village with its teepees, and birchbark canoes on the beautiful Minnehaha Creek, and their color- ful head regalia, the Hrst lndians were baptized in Minnesota. In working on the 1940 Wahian the editors have found that Minnesota, Indian Country, will never be again, but the Redman's spirit will never leave us. X f sum: I Cfb When sudden from the forest wide A red-hrown Chieftain Caine With towering forrn and haughty stride, And eye like kindling fiaineg No wrath he hreathed, no conflict sought, To no dark ainhush drew, But sirnply to the Old Word hrought The welcome of the New. -LYDIA HUNTLEY SIGOURNEY. What provision does the Constitution make concerning voting and voting qualifications? To what is the rising cost of modern living attributed? The answers to these and numerous other questions are answered when the student enters one of the social science classes proffered him by the interested and concerned teachers. If the student wishes to widen his knowledge of history and social conditions beyond the required acquaintance with civics and American History, he may choose one or both of the subjects, economics and world history. Every semester it prepares a budget which covers all senior expenditures, such as the banquet, Class Day, Commencement, Class Play, Lawn Party, Grist, and Wahian. This budget accepted by the class is apportioned into weekly payments. The Credit Bureau makes collections every Tuesday during home room period. The collectors assist the treasurer in the collection of 12A dues. The bureau, directed by Miss Klein and the treasurer, ably supervises the expenditure of class funds. A system of receipts has been worked out, and every member in the senior class is given a definite credit rating which employers may refer to in later years. June N!I7l0lVv4l li0NOR 5'0C'lf7,V 0 The hopeful gleam you may have seen in the eyes of many of the aspiring students at the end of each term was really a result of their work dur- ing the term. The object of all this gleaming is the National Honor Society, a national organiza- tion for those students who have been outstanding in scholarship, service, character and leadership. They are chosen from the upper quarter of the 11A, 12B, and 12A classes by their fellow students and members of the faculty. A student who is chosen becomes a life member if he continues his previous record. ,, if I + Ah, January T017 Row: Allen, Smith, H., Estes, Nichols, Ramsey, Mehlin, Berdan, Cole, Leslie, Hatlestad. 0 Second Row: Gorcler, Carlson. It is through them that all the problems of the student body are brought before the principal. Throughout the year they provide for edu- cational speakers and programs, and take charge of homecoming festivities. This year they undertook a new task-that of spon- soring all Washburn sunlights, which proved to be huge successes. 0.6.6108 U As the service organization of Washburn, the Upper Class club for girls, fills an im- portant place in school activities. During the year the club has a variety of entertainment and activities. Among these are the senior farewell party, a style show, the membership party, and an interesting talk on Europe. Each year the club gives a useful gift to the school. ZIBRARY AND 01-'FICE B0v4RD5' . To become better acquainted with the methods of working in and running an office, the office board affords a good opportunity to girls who have taken a commercial course. They are given practical experience in office work, such as: operating the switchboard, typing, distributing mail, operating adding machines, and acting as secretaries. ' Along with its other duties, this year the Library Board has maintained a show case for the pleasure and benefit of students. This year the thir- teenth Wahian is presented. We are proud to state that as about seventy-Eve per cent of the school buys a book, there is no need for outside advertising in our annual. La! Bingo! FRINCW Cl UB 0 The French Club of Washburn has successfully brought a deeper and more complete understanding of France and its language to the students. The club is divided into different groups named after several departments in France. Each group has charge of one meeting during the school year. Many interesting speakers have appeared before Le Cer- cle Francais and a varied program of entertainment has been carried out. 81 GERMAN CLUB and SPANISH CLUB ' This language club is organized to help the student become better acquainted with the language, customs, geography, and people of the native Germany. Meetings are conducted in Ger- man as far as possible, for the student learns much more by actually using the language than by merely reading a textbook. ' South America has been the main theme of the Spanish Club this year because of the growing importance of our relations with these countries. A talk on Panama and another talk supple- mented by colored movies on Mexico were of special interest to the members. Miss Tupper returned from a six months' visit in South America, told many of her interesting experiences at meet- ings. QUILL CLUB and CHROMA CLUB 0 The aspiring writers of today may become the celebrated au- thors of tomorrow, and the aim of the Quill Club is to help these students achieve their goal. Entrance into Quill is gained by submitting an original manuscript to be judged by the pres- ent members. ' ' The Chroma Club has speakers come in to talk on phases of art. It goes on several trips to sketch landscape and visits art exhibits around the city. For tryouts of this club, each person hands in three original pieces of art work, which are voted on by the present members. Posters used in the school are usually made by this club. The members who take part have an opportunity to learn much about dramatics, direct- ing, and general stage technique. The plays presented this year were Full Circle, Flattering Word, The Happy Journeyf, Three's a Crowd, The Tea,', and Pat on The Rocks. The plays are directed by the students themselves with much success. APPRENTICE CLUB . Washburn maintains two dramatic clubs for those who are talented in that field. The Apprentice Club is the stepping stone for membership in the Harlequin Club. Those who wish to try out are judged by the present members of Harlequin, by being cast in a play. Separated into boy and girl groups, the individual home rooms elect oilicers and carry on such business as banking and other financial affairs. The spice of life is injected into the pro- ceedings when the talented members present programs and other forms of entertainment. Other things considered are: eligibility on scholastic ratings and athletic finances in general. Each sport receives equal representation on the Board. This gives every boy, eligible for a letter, a fair chance if any diHiculties arise. For its usefulness and con- tinued activity it is one of the most popular organizations in the school. WU CLUB , 0 From the time a boy enters Washburn until he leaves, it is his hope that he may become a member of this club. W Club is composed of those boys that have won a letter in some sport by conforming to the standards set by the Athletic Board. Semi-annually a banquet is sponsored by the club, which is Well attended by coaches, athletes, and their fathers. Coaches and captains give resumes of their respective team and announcements of letter Winners are made at this time. This is one of the most looked forward to events of the entire year. s Back Row: Hoffman, Westhoff, Berg, Merrill, MacGregor 0 Third Row: Mr. Hoard, Mr. Larson, Mr. Martin, Mr. Ross 0 Second Row: Pazandak, Mr. Lee, Mr. Alwin, LaLone 0 Boilom Row: Mr. Dillner, Mr. Fleenor, Mr. MacQuarrie, Mr. Roder. The second half of the traditional West game saw the Cowboys come to life through the brilliant passing of Bob Bradford, to finally win by three touchdowns. Cage Cappy's Cardinals was the mighty war cry of the Miller turf regime as the two teams took the Held in Washburn's homecoming a week later. At the South game Dick Hoffman ran back an inter- cepted pass sixty yards, only to trip over his own pants. The Edison tilt marked the final game of the year, with the Tommies finally winning by two touchdowns. A squad composed of practically all sophomores and juniors proved that next year they will be THE team to beat. The season started off slowly with a setback against Edison. Vocationalls sharp- shooting was too much, but the following week the first victory was gained against West. In the first night game ever played by the Millers, Roosevelt won by a single point. In the following week came the upset of the year against Marshall. Captain Johnny Westhoff held All-State Don Mattson without a field goal. North won by one point, and South was victorious by two points. In the final game of the year, the third victory was gained by defeating the Central squad. One of the greatest sons of basketball ever in prep history is Washburn's prod- uct from Illinois, Dave Ruliffson. After two overtime periods in the game with West, the score remained a tie. In the final game of the A seniors the Millers swamped North 6-0. South got a one point victory, but the next week the boys walloped Edison 6-0 to enter the playoff. The Millers drew the league leaders, Roosevelt, who won by one point after a HCFCC struggle. Dick Hoffman was the only Miller on the All-City team. Top Row: Berg, Erdall, Hoffman, Kennedy, Kilgore. Bottom Row: Tinkham, Remole, Neiman, Willette. 5Pl!l.S'l1'llV65' FROM SWIMMING 0 First position in swimming seems to hold a jinx on the Miller splashmen, as once again, with a brilliant record behind them, they ended up with only West High above them. Outside of West's Victory over the Millers, Marshall was the only school to score more than twenty points. However, Coach Lee,s boys were determined to get even with West, regardless. In the Invitational Gustavus Adolphus Meet, Washburn triumphantly Walked away with all honors, West placing third. Likewise, in the City Wide Meet, the Miller splashers left West in a daze as they nosed out the Cowboys 38-3 6, setting a new record in the 180 yard Medley. For the Hrst time in many years Prep wrestling was organized to a large extent as an interscholastic sport. The inexperienced squad ended up in fourth Femling on End l place. Although no Miller was able to repeat Dick Bowen's state title of last year, Gene MacKenzie succeeded in reaching the quarter-finals. 0 The Gym Team was greatly handicapped this year, because of the fact that they are allotted only two days a week for practice, but never- theless they succeeded in ending up the season in fifth place. Roosevelt won the title once again. 1 17 A TENNIS Tennis expectations are of high caliber this year with Bruce Pazandant acting as captain. The Miller netmen are aiming at a season which will surpass rhar of 1939, which won an enviable list of victories. GOLF Captain Herman Berg, Dave Ruliffson, and Neil Sorenson form the nucleus of a very strong golf squad this year. One thousand points are necessary to receive an emblem.'Any girl who is in this group has shown a real and active interest in sports. The girls who compose this group are usually found to be the leaders in their classes and extra-curricular activities. wxwfse.wm' ..asswrag:ieamQ21maiaimseiaii Q .4 0 To become a W', wearer, a girl must have six hundred points which she has earned in various sports and activities. To earn these points, she must partake in home room and individual sports. There are four home room tournaments, speed- ball, volleyball, basketball, and baseball. These are played from fall to spring in the order named. The tournaments which partners or individuals may enter are tennis, deck tennis, and badminton.
