With its many beautiful lakes and parks, the district provides an unusually attractive setting for open air activities. To enjoy recreation during all seasons of the year against a background of rare, natural beauty is a privi- lege enjoyed by many. Perhaps the most out- neighborhood is the impos- ing Washburn tower which is distinctive in its impressive, classical design. Standing only two blocks from the school, it is the most familiar landmark in South Minneapolis. To express our appreciation for our many beautiful surroundings, which contribute so much to rich living, the 1939 Class of Washburn High School dedicates Volume XII of the Wahian to Our Neighborhood. standing feature of our Salma! EW As life unfolds its plans for us, We go our divers ways, The cherished thoughts we'll all recall Will be of glad school days. Hazy, perhaps, will be the scenes As we bring back to mind Those all absorbing grade school days W'hich now seem far behind. In junior high we gathered friends Whose faces will not blur, And, as our thoughts go winging back, For them our hearts will stir. And last, but never least, of course, Will linger always nigh The crowning happiness of school- Our years at Washburn High. E if ...MH E R55 33 25 . +15- 1 L il ,Wi ,f. y. A penny saved is a penny earned. From the beginning, Senior English is by far the most enjoyable course to many students. Shakespeare, offered during 11A, is always a well liked subject. Not only are the interpretations of Shakespeare's works carefully studied, but the life and customs of his time are added to the knowledge acquired during the first half year of senior English. A thorough knowl- edge of the famous writers, literature, and history of England is gained during the final year of high school English. The text, Adventures in English Literature, carries the student from the Anglo-Saxon epics to modern twentieth century novels. The tenth and the eleventh grades are divided into boy and girl advisories. Each group elects officers and other representatives necessary to carry on Home Room activities. The advisers help the students to plan individual programs with their future education and careers in view. Sportsmanship and Home Room spirit are promoted by intramural athletics. In the twelfth grade, the B seniors are combined into one large Home Room, while the A seniors meet in the auditorium. Class oiiicers are elected for each group. The school has found that three periods a week are sufficient for counseling and other necessary business. Thus, by limiting the auditoriums to the other two days, the time is used to the best possible advantage. 12B-325 Top Row: Atwood, Brand, Bar-' ron, Chaffee, Brown, Cawcutt, Bredesen. 0 Fourth Row: Athel- stan, Budde, Bennett, Conrad, B. Potentially a winning team all season, the squad could not hit its full stride until the final encounter with South, trampling them under a 19-12 advantage. Edison, Wash- burnls first opponent, was awarded a narrow decision by dint of ill-timed Miller fumbles, but the play as a whole was a winning brand. Improved for the game against Roosevelt, the squad was dealt a stunning blow-an injury to co-captain Bud Leckie-- a setback from which the team did not completely recover all season. Although defeated by a charging Polar aggregation, the team rallied to meet West in a disputed home- coming clash which students contend is still in progress. With the ball in Washburn's possession on the opponent's two-yard line, and time for at least another play, a fire- cracker inadvertently stopped the game. It was not resumed. After bowing before an inspired Marshall squad and a fast Central outfit, the Millers came into their own in the victory over South. Bud Higgins was honored by a berth on the all-city team for his fine open field running, Dick Bowen, a stellar tackle, gained honorable mention. Members of the Library Board are NB average students who have served an appren- ticeship of one semester and have received a teacher's recommenda- tion. The Library Board sponsors Book Week, has complete charge of the books, helps with the bulletin exhibits, and sees that the library functions smoothly during study periods throughout the day. L S. At the end of each semester, the fond hopes of a number of aspiring students are at last realized with their entrance as working members in the National Honor Society. From the upper one-fourth of the 11A and 12B classes, pupils whose initiative has brought them outstanding recognition in service, character, scholarship, and leadership are chosen by their fellow students and members of the faculty to become working members in the national organization. Washburn is proud that the idea of a Working membership originated in its halls. just this year, this plan was adopted as a national practice. Accordingly a working member must maintain his previous record in order to become a life member. The National Honor Society meets with our principal to discuss problems and plans concerning the welfare of the school. The meetings of this group are particularly worth- while because Mr. MacQuarrie often makes interesting comments and interpretations on timely issues of local and national importance. The students in the group enjoy their principal's remarks about other schools he has visited on his extensive travels. Proximity to facilities for all winter sports--skating, skiing, ice boat- ing, and tobogganing-gives to all Washburn students the opportunity to enjoy winter out-of-doors. With hve skating rinks in the district, is it any wonder figure skating and hockey are so popular at Washburn? Skiing and tobogganing on the numerous nearby hills are carried on by the novice and the expert with equal enjoyment. With Washburn's representatives this year placing in city and state meets, skiing has gained rapidly in popularity. Washburn students spend much time enjoy- ing winter sports, but they find the popular snow season far too short. January graduation took one 0 of Washburn's finest athletes --Bud Leckie. His hard-hit- ting football, fast-skating hockey, and sturdy javelin throwing have marked him as one whom coaches are loath to lose. Mac Thayer and Oliver Dahlen were both hon- ored for their outstanding play at goalie and defense, respectively, by membership on the paper's all-city team. Macv Thayer. Ollie Dahlen. W Because Washburn defeated a strong West team on two occasions by a 2-1 score, the Millers are again city champions in inter- scholastic hockey. A hard skating, hard checking team closed the city schedule with a record unmarred by defeat. In the first two games the Millers met stiff oppo ition, eking out a one point victory over West and tying South. But with their shooting eyes trim for Marshall, a new scoring record was made when the Millers knocked in six goals. In January, graduation deprived the team of its first line but the replacements proved fully capable. Paired with Marshall in the play- off, Washburn again shut out the Car- dinals. The clash with West for the cham- pionship was a close, fast encounter. The Millers won due to a superior defense. In the Twin City title meeting, Washburn met its only defeat at the hands of a fast and tricky St. Paul Washington team. Mighty Harsh Weather! The Tommy sharpshooting and the Miller inaccuracy spelled defeat. Vocational was an easy victim of the alive Miller defense. Our traditional rival, West, provided more trouble than was bargained for but could not de- liver the winning punch. The aim of the Hi-Y is to develop its members mentally, spiritually and physically. For this reason it has adopted the triangle for its symbol. Hi-Y has developed character and responsibility in its members by letting them handle their own meetings and social activities. The great majority of the outstanding boys in school activities, athletic and scholastic, are members of one of the eight Washburn Hi-Y chapters. The chapters assist the Central Y.M.C.A. by furthering World Friendship activities and helping in the annual financial drive. This year Washburn district Hi-Y won the prize for outstanding City Wide Y activities. This prize was the picture, The Horizons, by.Margaret Fitzhugh Browne, which now holds a conspicuous place in our office. Social activities bind the friendships which boys have made in the Hi-Y. The I-Iallowe'en and Spring dances are enjoyed jointly by all the clubs. Each club plans a few parties and stags each semester. The great increase in membership shows that more and more upper- class boys are becoming interested active members of Washburn Hi-Y organizations. Formerly, the entire group met monthly. Now, the club is divided into eleven chapters of twenty-five mem- bers each. With one cabinet, one joint, and two chapter meet- ings every month, the club hopes to stimulate more individual participation in all the various activities carried on by the group. The Silver Triangle Girl Reserves also initiated a new plan of organization. Each girl was given an opportunity to choose among Boy and Girl Relationship, Party Planning, Sports and Hobbies, or Dancing as her group. Through this plan, mem- bers are able to enjoy meetings which are more personally in- teresting to them, and also of a practical educational value. MQ Mme? ' Orchestra-The Washburn orchestra, under the capable direction of Mr. Super, meets second period every day to study and play the orchestrated works of the great masters. The orchestra plays for all auditoriums, class plays, operas, Christmas Choral programs, and commencement ex- ercises. It provides an opportunity for students who are musically inclined to study symphonies and the standard overtures, and to be instructed in group music. There are forty members in the orchestra. Each year this organization contributes a great deal to the enjoyment of school audi- toriums. Through this medium many students receive instruction which helps them musically. ' Cantata--For the thirteenth time in the history of Washburn, the curtain rose on the annual Christmas cantata. More than three hundred students from the Glee Clubs, Choir, Orchestra, and the chorus classes participated in the presentation. The program was composed of an un- usually fine variety of numbers this year. Solos, duets, trios, and a string quartette, amplified by the excellent shadings of the chorus, produced a sparkling evening of beautiful music and song. Qfee Glade U VI! ' Girls' Glee Club-The glee clubs furnish a great deal of musical enjoyment at Washburn. Tryouts are held every year to choose students with outstanding voices for membership. Twice each week the Girls' Glee Club meets apart from the Boys'. The girls are divided into four singing parts for numbers especially arranged for girls' voices. Some of the songs which the girls enjoyed singing this year include Great Dayf, japanese Sandman, June Rhapsody, and Will You Remember? from Sweethearts The Girls' and Boys' Glee Clubs combine to present Memorial and Armistice Day pro- grams annually. Members compete for solo and trio parts in these programs. The opera is presented each year by the Glee Clubs. It affords a great deal of pleasure and gives the students an opportunity to show their talents in voice and acting. 0 Boys' Glee Club-The Boys' Glee Club is organized much in the same way as the Girls'. The boys meet twice each week to sing favorites such as the rousing, Stout Hearted Men, Alexander,U The Mosquito, and the Italian Street Song. The Glee Clubs this year presented Victor Herbert's beloved operetta, Naughty Marietta under the direction of Mr. Beckstrom. In this production, Verna Nelson and Doris Phillips played the part of Marietta While Thomas Abbott portrayed Captain Dick. Two comic characters, Lizette and Simon, played by Edith Craswell and Ray Habata respec- tively, added a humorous touch to the performance. Beautiful costumes of the seventeenth century and interesting scen- ery contributed to making Naughty Marietta one of the great successes and outstanding events of the year at Washburn. 74 ik W Behave Yourself Top Row: Asper, Mitchell, Brown, MacGregor, Pomeroy, Hayes, Hall--Treasurer 125, Madsen. 0 Seroml Row: Rick- ord, Otterstein, Cousins, John- son, Waldron, Reigstad, Geiger. 0 Firsf Row: Booton, Work- m'an-Secretary 113, Vice Presi- dent QZJ, Pearson-Treasurer fly, Miss Smith, Mrs. Nether- cott, Shirk--President Qlj, Snedeker-Vice President Q1 J, Secretary QZJ, Craswell. 76 First reading -i 'v-.. The Harlequin Club presents from three to five one-act plays for assembly programs during the year. Students taking part in these productions receive valuable training in stage technique, knowledge of drama, and the cultivation of poise. Fellow members direct the plays with great success. This year's auditorium offerings, At the Movies, The Eldest, Wild Hobby Horsesf, Sunset by Slantskyf' and America Passes By, were particular favorites among the entire stu- dent body. Students aspiring to tread the boards of Washburn's stage must first become members of the Apprentice Club, which is under the supervision and direction of the Harlequin group. I I With a background of screams, gongs, and secret panels, the January class play, The Cat and the Canary, was presented to a capacity audience. The play concerned a legacy left by an eccentric gentleman to his niece, Annabella West-Jane Balch. However, if she could be proven insane the wealth would go to one known only by the lawyer. In the following incidents the lawyer is killed, and the blame placed upon an escaped lunatic, The Cat. Finally, it is disclosed that the Cat,' is Charles, a nephew-Jack Shirk. As a final touch Annabella is happily united with the confused Johnny Paul- Bob Larson. The play was excellently received by the enthusiastic audience. The supporting cast included Cicely-- Jean Anderson, Mammy Pleasant--Anne Painter, Susan-Geraldine Smith, Harry--Bob Mitchell, Dr. Patterson- Kenneth Barry, and Hendricks-Jerry Rearick. The effect of moving walls, secret drawers, and slamming doors on the audience was amazing. The intenseness of the play kept everyone on the edge of his seat. judging from the way in which the audience viewed the performance, it's safe to say that the Cat and the Canary was a real experience. 88 Q Q M' X5 .3 7 iam 'R V gig? 1' 'WR u-an--1 5 f 3 unsung 'Mm Q, , K Q' , ,XM 5 'gglgzm :pw NA -3 ah ,. Washburn's three language clubs, German, Spanish, and French, all aim to promote interest in the language, cus- toms, people, and geography of their respective countries. The business and social meetings are conducted in the for- eign tongue as' far as possible, for by informal conversation, students learn a language must faster than by mere classroom reading. Through a wide variety of games, songs, puppet shows, skits, and even refreshments, supplemen- tary learning is made enjoyable. La Alianza Espanola and Der Deutsche Verein require a satisfactory theme for membership. However, initiates in Le Cercle Francais become members by taking part in an initiation program. This year the clubscooperated to make a joint display of students, foreign correspondence as a trophy case exhibit. Spanish and German Clubs use the committee system for individual participation. The French Club is uniquely di- vided into the French unit of government, the department, headed by a prefect. Each -department provides one program each year. The Clubs try to include at least one native guest speaker on their program every semester. This is one method which really tests the students' understanding of a foreign language. The school may well be proud of these clubs. The students are highly interested in them, and the programs presented are very worthwhile. 96 Qwmft Top Row: B. The Miller racqueteers are pinning their hopes on the two returning lettermen and abundant material to carry them through the schedule to a successful finale, and possibly to another title. ' Golf-With another strong squad the prospects for top golf honors appear very high. The Washburn divot-diggers are aiming for a season which will surpass the fine record of the 1938 squad, which won an enviable list of victories and capped them with a third in the Minnesota State Meet. This young gentleman desired the hand of one Phyllis Jack- son. However, as a prerequisite to obtaining the young lady he must show his good faith by investing in her father's jam factory. To gain the necessary funds, Freddie employs Ronald Eustace Psmith, a general fixer-upper. In the en- suing adventures comedy reaches a high pitch, involving gangsters, stolen jewelry, and many varied forms of hyster- ia. The supporting cast included some of the most comical characters who have ever graced the Washburn stage. The play was presented in an excellent manner by the students. The staging was very striking, and all who saw it will remember Leave It to Psmith for a long time to come. 9 BRUCE YUND- Such a Hne fellow we wish he were twins.
