FOREWORD THIS LITTLE SOUVENIR PROGRAM PAMPHLET IS AN ATTEMPT TO RECORD SOME OF THE INCIDENTS AND ACTIVITIES THAT MARK THE OPENING OF THE WASHBURN SENIOR JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL The Washburn Senior-Junior High School THERE arc a few features of Washburn which arc quite unique. The first one is that our school is situated on a site which covers five acres. There are few other high schools which have so generous a space. In the center of this stands our fine school—one to be honored and appreciated, for we have a great deal to be proud of. The building is constructed in the shape of a T. the greatest length being 380 feet. This plan is much more economical than that of the ' hollow square. Much time is saved for pupils and teachers: the auditorium is made less expensive, for there arc no side-courts, and no big windows and window curtains arc required. The Bureau of Buildings planned our school. This department, since it is a permanent factor of the Board of Education, can plan better and more reasonably built schools. The taxpayer secs his ideal school realized in one like Washburn, for it combines durability and completeness with a pleasing exterior and interior. One needs only to glance at the front of our building to see the wonderful lighting we have. That broad east expanse. practically all windows, is a sight worth seeing. A trip through the school accompanied by a guide will show all the features of Washburn to those who would like to sec where a part of their taxes goes. Our windowlcss. well-aired auditorium is the most important feature; it seats 1.500 pupils. Our gymnasiums are so situated that people using them in the evening will not need to walk out of their way in getting in or out. because entrances at either end of that floor make this unnecessary. We also have a wastepaper chute which saves the janitors a great deal of walking. The shops consist of electricity, sheet metal, woodworking. and two mechanical drawing rooms: these are on the ground floor. There are thirty-six recitation rooms, the auditorium, library, two mechanical drawing rooms, an electricity room, one for sheet metal, wood-working, printing, applied art. free-hand drawing. a conservatory, a botany laboratory, an elementary science laboratory, elementary science lecture room, a room for bookkeeping, typewriting, banking, two study halls, a room for chorus, music, one for book sales, one junior high book room, a nurse's room, news room. ticket room, three teachers' rest rooms, nineteen for storage. and five offices. Washburn is a senior-junior high now. or with the 6-6 division. The reason this plan is used is to relieve congested conditions in a section of the city where the school population is not large enough to justify the building of a junior and a senior high school. The Board of Education plans ultimately to make Washburn a senior high only. Then the Board hopes to purchase the Washburn Home grounds and build a junior high there. This plan will be realized as soon as Washburn district grows enough; conservative estimators believe that in five years it will be necessary to build a junior high. Washburn will represent when wholly equipped nearly a million dollar investment. If it trains strong bodies, fine minds, and youths whose ideals are honor, loyalty, service, the investment will be more than justified. Honor Self-restraint, self-mastery, common sense, the power of accepting individual responsibility and yet of acting in conjunction with others, courage and resolution—these are the qualities which mark a masterful people. —Theodore Roosevelt. W F. WEBSTER Superintendent Minneapolis Public Schools A. F.. MACQUARRIE Principal Washburn Senior-Junior High School OFFICERS OF THE WASHBURN PARENT-TEACHER ASSOCIATION Mr. Chaney President Mrs. Campbell Mrs Anderson Second Vice President First Vice President Our Community By Clarence R. Chaney President of the Washburn High Parent-Teacher Association A PROMINENT man said recently, in seeking to explain the popularity of the radio, that it had become an institution of permanent importance because it draws into one audience vast numbers of people, over a wide area, and makes of them a com- munity. He held that all movements and organizations which have become really successful have achieved success because they have, in some way. created such communities. Measured by this standard, the organized work of OFFICERS OF I'HE WASHBURN PARENT-TEACHER ASSOCIATION Miss Thomas Mr. Kii.so Mrs. Duncan Recording Secretary It mutter Corresponding Secretary Washburn parents and teachers promises more than we realize. Regardless of the distances which separate their homes, they are being drawn rapidly together by a common interest. To them, as individuals. Washburn High School is a beautiful building with every sort of modern equipment for the intellectual and physical development of their children. As a group, they see in it an opportunity to work together, under the most favorable circumstances, to safeguard the interests of all chil- dren in the district, and solve one another's educational problems. Thus, our school community is fast taking form. In our impatience, we frequently feel that our efforts are producing very meager results, but on closer scrutiny we find that in this first year's work deep foundations have been laid on which a more showy superstructure can be built in years to come. Let's build well for Washburn! There is always time for courtesy.
