AWARDS DAY Gary Bachand and Lisa Rapps were the recipients of the Police Outstand- ing Male and Female Athlete Award. Washburn Police Officer Al Greene made the presentation. Deb Olson earned a 1st place award in the ad craft competition put on by the Evergreen Shopper. The award was presented by Mrs. Toni Pedersen, art teacher. Mr. Rick Seppa presented Steve Har- ding with the most improved band member award. French instructor Madame Marty Cole introduced the French students who went to France this year in entertain- ing way highlighting their adventures on the trip. They were (L to R) Joey Borchers. AnnCarlson. Jody Coutu- rier. Goi Ferraro. Julie Gilbert. Sheila Guske. Caroline Maki, Pam Olson. Theresa Petrasko Krista Gustafson. (Not shown but there are Peggy Arson and Juliet Harding. Madame Cole gave each girl a remembrance and a ‘ washcloth”. The girls then presented Madame Cole with flowers. 18

I Perfect attendance awards went to Michelle Egan, Trent Fischer, Terri Westlund and Ed Westlund. MIDDLE: The John Albers Award in Forensics went to senior Steve Swedberg. Mrs. Ferraro (shown) and Mrs. Sharon St. Germain made the presentation. ABOVE: Steve also received the newly initiated John Philip Sousa Award given by Mr. Rick Seppa. AWARDS DAY Outstanding students in their respective fields were honored at the Washburn Awards Day program. High School Principal Ken Rogers welcomed the students, parents and faculty to the pro- gram held Thursday, May 28 in the high school gymnasium. Beginning the program Pam Olson, Junior class president ac- cepted the traditional class pencil from Senior class president, Steve Swedberg. Gary Bachand received two awards for his athletic and scholas- tic abilities. They were the U.S. Army Outstanding Athlete Award and the Darrel Olson Student Athlete award presented by the Washburn Education Association representative Pat Da- vis. Gary Bachand was then recognized as the Most Valuable Base- ball Player and Jeremy Jacobs as the Most Improved Baseball Player during the recognition of this year’s baseball team by Coach Nick Pristash. , The girl’s softball team, one step away from the Regional Cham- pionship, were recognized and encouraged by the student body and Coach Dale Foulke. Goi Ferraro and Deb Chapman tied for the Most Improved Player Award and Lisa Rapps, the Most Valuable Player Award. Outstanding Business Student awards presented by Mrs. Paula Eskola went to Bobbie Jo Jonas, Connie Flonnes, and Karl Morrin. Other Business awards were presented to the students who won at the Skills Competition and Regional and State FBLA Competition. The 31 students who participated in forensics this year were awarded with certificates of participation, letters, bars and lamps of knowledge by forensic coaches Mrs. Sharon St. Ger- main and Mrs. Joan Ferraro. Of these 31 students 19 represent- ed Washburn at Madison State Speech Contest. Those students receiving silver medals at state were: Paul Miller, Michelle Seidel, Steve Swedberg, Peggy Arnson, Jody Courturier, Nicole Engfer, Pam Olson, Dena Arnson, Juliet Harding and Gina Scott. Those receiving bronze medals were: Goi Ferraro, Theresa Petrasko, Charmayne Pristash, Nancy Amraen, Sara Gilbert, Debbie Guske, Dorothy Houle, Tina Jenicek and Chris Landergan. The following students received band awards from their director Mr. Rick Seppa. Pep Band Awards, Stacie Greene and Terri Westlund; American Musical Foundation for outstanding musi- cians, Matt McQueen, Trent Fischer, Tom McQueen, and Steve Swedberg; Most Improved Musician, Steve Harding; Jazz Impro- visation, Steve Swedberg; Outstanding Jazz Musician, Pat Beeksma; 4 year band award, Kurt Jenicek, Charmayne Pris- tash and Lorene Wroblewski; Arion Award, Charmayne Pris- tash; Jazz Improvisation, Steve Swedberg and Outstanding Band Musician, Tracey Merila. The John Philip Sousa Band Award, initiated this year, was presented to Steve Swedberg. Scholarships given by the Washburn Music Boosters were given to Mike Kurschner, Matt McQueen, and Lynda Kopp. Mrs. Chris Engfer, choir director, recognized the senior choir students; Tracey Merila, Lorene Wroblewski, Steve Swedberg, Ann Carlson, Dean Cook, Charmayne Pristash, Tammy Ekholm and Goi Ferraro and handed out solo and ensemble medals to 47 students. Annual awards presented by Mrs. Lynn Adams were given to Lisa Goldman, Lena Lindquist, Eric Follis, Ann Carlson and Garit Pedersen.
