Class History 1962 We began our first year at Washburn High School with thirty-eight pupils. We had our first class elections and met Mr. Haugen and Mr. Stauffer, our class advisors for the next four years. Freshman class activities that we took part in were: initiation and the subsequent Sophomore Return Party, building our float for the Homecoming Parade (taking first place), and decorating the gym for Class Day. Sandy Olson, Mary K. Benedict, and Judy Malinoski represented our class and school as B-Team Cheer- leaders. We began our Sophomore year with thirty-seven classmates. Class activities this year included: initiating the new Freshmen, sponsoring bake sales, building our Home- coming float, and attending the Sophomore Return Party given in our honor. During this year, John Niemisto had the opportunity of participating in the state forensic meet at Madison, Wisconsin. Several members of our class were active in extracurricular activities and school leadership. As Juniors, we had thirty-seven students enrolled in our class. It was to be a very busy year for us. Our first big event was the bonfire and Homecoming Dance, both successful. Next was the Holiday Hop, held during Christmas vacation. After that came the Junior-Senior Banquet. Our speaker was Mr. Gray and our M.C. was George Semb. A few weeks later, Karen Spears and Dave Grant represented our school in the state forensic meet. Our biggest event of the year was the Prom. The King and Queen were Jack Louko and Janet Roberts. The theme was Paradise of the Deep, music having been provided by the Northern Lights. The last event of our Junior year was the Soring Hop held in celebration of summer vacation. We entered our Senior year with thirty-six class members. Planning and building our float was the first event. Then came the Class Play, Call Me Darling, which, after a few months of practice, went off well and was a huge success. Our Senior Class also put on a Donkey Basketball Game to raise money. Next, we attended the Junior-Senior Banquet. John Niemisto and Ed Stephenson represented our class and school at the state forensic meet this year. Several of the boys in our class were mem- bers of the all-conference football team on the first-string. Then we began preparations for the culmination of all our years at Washburn High School - Graduation. Our class motto was, Today we follow; Tomorrow we lead, and our class colors were green and white. We chose Jack Louko and Karen Spears as class favorites. We, as a class, believe that our years at Washburn High School have been both beneficial and enjoyable. 25
