First ties with the U. S. Navy and the Ha- waiian lslands were established 23 May 1841, when the Sir Andrew Hammond, a ship of the English whaling fleet was captured by the U. S. Navy during the War of 1812. Captain David Porter in the Essex, placed aboard her a prize crew commanded by Lt. lohn Gambel of the U. S. Marine Corps. The Hammond was taken into Honolulu for brief repairs and then set sail for the mainland. The many tourists and their influence appears to have blotted out many of the old customs and traditions of the Hawaiian people. One must look far to find the original version of the hulu dance for instance. Also one does not see as many Ha- waiian people as he would expect. However, the islands of the Hawaiian group still possess the famous tropical and exotic air, which for centuries has made them a tourist's paradise. The islands of Hawaii provide the world with virtually all its pine-apple, and the Western hemisphere with most of its sugar and coconutsl Pineapples are raised with extreme care and the production of this Hawaiian Gold has become a major business of our 50th state. gf
