And then came the challenge of wars, the great wars, and man was pitted against man. A somber figure o'ershadowed this earth. The sky was so blackened by the soot of war, of hate. of fear that the star of hope seemed to fade from view. Men. boys. women within this desert oasis came from their homes, their iobs. their schools to face this newest challenge. They fought: they struggled: they died. The clamor, the heartbreak of war was felt as never before. Where once there were riches. now there were hate and tears. For some there was the physi- ge .-sw. I y cal pain of battle: for others there was the emotional pain of a son killed. Man was not fighting against Nature but against himself. Compassion and reason were buried somewhere beneath the ashes of atomic ruin. Man the builder. the dreamer, was became man the destroyer. l-le need no longer fear Nature: now he must fear himself - within his grasp was the power to destroy all that he held, dear. the world and all that lived upon it. Finally . . . peace. A new and terrifying experience had become part of the unwritten saga of man.
