And now. titty years ot evolution ' msg, W. . WW have passed. an evolution which wrought change upon change. For they were a people with eyes upon a star. a people with hopes and dreams ot a land transtormed-a desert ot weary brown becoming an oasis ot ioytul green. Ah. yes, once this barren land stretched tar beneath its celestial canopy . . . the sun. the stars, the moon its only light. Beneath their glimmer, nature's iaclcrabbits scurried treely upon the calm and barren land. Nature's maiesty re- mained unchallenged. ' And then. in covered wagons. on horseback and on toot. came men pushing westward. seeking such a land whose tar- stretching plain spoke ot treedom. But the land was arid and forbidding. Many. disheartened. unwilling to struggle against Nature. turned away. But there were those who accepted the challenge. those who stayed-the pioneers. They pitched their tents in this torbidden place. this rabbit kingdom. and determined it to be their home. l-lere man and Nature were pitted against each other in desperate struggle. By sunlight. by candlelight. by lantern. the people built and rebuilt-always with eyes upon that same untading star that had been their guide.

Parked along Wasco's main street in 1911 were horses, buggies and early versions of the automobile igfyfiif if? we Jejfyf QV, Q tg? They toiled and they wept: some cursed and some bent their heads in prayer. Together man and woman by the sweat ot' their brows made homes - with logs. with labor, with love. And in those humble homes they taught their children endurance and reverence. womanhood and manhood: a girl was taught to be a woman. a boy to be a man. Qgfgs VL?2?V?fzsff And though those pioneers continually struggled against the adversity ot the land. the eternal rainbow ot human emotions remained. In their homes upon this desert land. the pioneers - man. woman. child - laughed and cried, loved and hated. prayed and cursed. braved and feared. With thanktul hearts in the midst ot wilderness. they added a one-room school. From these meager beginnings-from these pioneers. guided by an untading star, sheltered by an eternal rainbow- a community. a school evolved.
