CLASSES The characteristic features of the old-time schools-the birch rod, the predominance of discipline over in- struction,the meagre curriculum,the rough and uncomfortable school furnishings and buildings-were also typical of Wl1eeling's earliest schools. The first free public schools in Wlieeliiig were begun in 1847.
