HISTORY GF WHEELING Led by Colonel Ebenzer and his brothers, Silas and jonathan, the first settlement was made at the mouth of Wlieeling Creek in 1769. The early history of this settlement is a story ofbravery and her- oism in conquering the wilderness and the Indians. The little community grew until in 1836, just one hundred years ago, Vifheeling was incorporated as a city. Since then it has grown to be the second largest city in West Virginia, with a population of approxif mately 60,000. Its situation on the banks of the Chio River amidst great coal fields has led Wlieeliiig to become an important industrial and manufacturing center. Coal mining has always been an important industry, the mines supply- ing local demands and those of outside markets. Glass making, now one of our greatest industries, was begun in 1821. The manufacture of tobacco has been an important industry as far back as 1850. The building of the National Road in 1818 and the first railroads in 1852 aided greatly in the growth of the city. Neither has Wlieelinig been backward in education. Private schools existed as early as 1808. Notable among these were J the Wlieeliiig Female Seminary, established in 1850 and m ID By 1859 a free public school had been built in each of Lu Linsly Institute, begun in 1820. Wlieeli1ig's five wards. The first high school was started in E 0 1897, having an enrollment of 279. Hand in hand with the development of the schools came the beginnings of the press. The first newspaper, the Wlieeling Repository, was printed in 1807. In this paper and those later established, VVheeIing's history is recorded. I E 4 D. 5 loo YEAR
