The year 1958-1959 brought with it an awakened interest in the realm of science. The first step in the conquest of space, together with the other projects of the Inter- national Geo-Physical year, have widened our horizons. We are thinking of the pos- sibilities of other existing civilizations which are as yet unheard of and unexplored. With this in mind, we, the members of the staff of The Blair, have asked our- selves, What would a visitor from outer space find here in Wfarsaw Central School? Are we offering and accepting the best in the field of well rounded education? Allow us to present to you our guest, Zyxw, from Saturn. You will find him looking in upon you and participating in the activities of your school day and year. Vile hope that he will agree with us that this is a day of tremendous opportunity and challenge for those who will accept it, and that our school has much to offer. 2 ,ORDER N092 X x X 63-70 5 Q Classes 5 Q? Doc , as he is affection- ately known, has tried to make us aware of the science of life and its relationship to the universe. His quiet New England humor and scholarly speech have made attendance in his classes a pleasant experience. Dr. Rice came to us in 1947 after a very interesting career in the field of educa- tion. A graduate of Brown University, he started as a high school teacher. Later. after completing his doctorate at Brown. he taught in several universities and colleges: University of Maine, University of Tennessee, Tufts Medical College. and a private dental college in Boston. He also worked for the government in the Federal Bureau of Fisheries and for the Boston Museum of Science. This, plus eleven years in Warsaw as a teacher of general science, health and hi- ology, marks him as one whose life has been devoted to the advancement of learning. It is with sincere affection and appreciation that we, the Blast staff of 1959, dedicate our yearbook to him. V ffgzi 'xo . ,Y -:,,,.. We became members of Mrs. Ahl's kindergarten and spent an enjoyable year building play houses and spilling sand. The first few days were spent trying to calm Barb Milliman's nerves. She did not want to go to school and make lots of friends. She just wanted to go home! The excitement really began in Mrs. Rich's first grade when Dave Shear and Sandy Chase got sent home for talking in class. We can all remember many happily spent hours under Miss Myers and Miss Bartlett in music and art. We cannot forget second grade and the time Sandy Scott had keeping her milk up off the floor. This was also the year of the big contest between Margaret Finch and Bob Firestine to see who could write the smallest so the teacher could not read it. In the third grade Norm Clark joined us from the last year's class, and we all knew that the reason was that Miss Dick could not part with Wabbitt. Rosemary Vasile became one of Miss Stafford's group that same year. Judy Hawkins, George Moffatt, and Einar Gall joined us in the fourth grade. Under .the watchful eyes of Miss Donlon and Miss Capron we studied about Pimwe and his friends. This year marked the beginning of a lengthy romance between George Moffatt and Sandy Chase. A similar situation de- veloped when Carol Wares and Einar Gall kept making eyes at each other. Violence flared when Pat Ackler slapped Norm Burns with a ruler at the request of Miss Donlon. In fifth grade we made exhibits for the county fair. Mrs. Gardner's room made an exhibit on bees, and Mrs. Eck's room made another on sugar pro- duction. The people in Mrs. Gardner's room had a delightful trip into the realm of high school when Mrs. Rice was unable to climb the stairs and she exchanged rooms with them. In seventh grade we learned interesting facts about New York State, including the counties, from Miss Fox. We also were taught the intricacies of English from Mr. Baker. During the summer following seventh grade the town was set on edge when Kay Morgan report- ed having seen a wildcat behind her house. Kay be- came a local heroine with her name in all the papers. During the school year our class gained Linda James, Sharon Sherman and joan Sierk. At the end of the eighth grade we had a successful picnic at the village park. Ninth grade brought the usual group of fresh- men from St. Michael's School. Included in this group were Carol Burns, Penny Powers, Bill Putney, Bob Baker, Don Princs, Diane Vigneri, Peggy Co- veny, Brenda Fitzgerald, Libbie Callahan, Kay Mor- gan, and jane Martin. Our sophomore year featured a sports dance and the initiation of a drive to sell Warsaw buttons. We had numerous baked food sales under the watch- ful eyes of Mr. Becker and Mr. Hackemer. We also had a very successful paper drive during which we were bombarded by tomatoes hurled by upperclass- men. The junior Prom, Oriental Fascination, was the highlight of our junior year. The cafeteria, re- splendent in yellow crepe paper and Chinese lan- terns, provided an Oriental air for the sixty-odd couples who attended. We also served at various dinners throughout the year, including the Teachers' Conference and the Alumni Banquet. The beginning of our senior year witnessed the addition of Pamela McCabe to our class. For the first time in over thirty years out football team had an undefeated season. Senior members of this team included Marvin Taylor, Bob Baker, Roger Burns, Bob Wheeler, Bill Putney and George Moffatt. The senior play, December Bride, was a success with Margaret Finch and George Moffatt in the leading roles, and with Carol XVares and Einar Gall in sup- porting parts. A senior dinner before the Perry basketball game was one of our last money making projects. Now we look forward to the seniqr circus, our Washington trip, the Senior Ball, and that long- awaited event- graduation. The years have zipped by all too rapidly, although at times we longed for snow days and vacations from the burdens of school. However, Warsaw Central has left its mark on us wherever we may beg and we like to think that the class of 1959 has made its impression upon the history of our school. M Mr. Lawrence Appleby The class of 1959, although the smallest in some time has had many activities during the past year. These were successful and rewarding, thanks to the leadership of our sponsor, Mr. Appleby. We started the year with a magazine drivel Soon after this, we served as waiters at the St. Mi- chael's 100th Anniversary Dinner. As a result of the vigor and enthusiasm shown by everyone in the class, both of these activities added considerably to our class treasury. The senior play, December Bride, was presented in October. Although earlier than usual, it was a great success under the direction of Mrs. Hazlett. Then came the Senior Circus, the trip to Wash- ington, and the Senior Ball, the high points of out senior year. As we look back on the many fond memories of our school days, we feel proud to have been a part of Warsaw Central. In the vears to come, we will look back on these times as the happiest of our lives. While Matt is struggling to get ahead at the office, Lily smashes the fender of his boss's car. Misfortune follows misfortune, and soon Lily is Presented October 3, 1958 Under the direction of MRS. E. FRANCES HAZLETT discussed by the young couple in hushed voices. Lily overhears one of these conversations and plans for action. Being a widow, she has no home of her own, so she decides she must get married. Things seem to be working wonderfully until the prospective groom's mother appears, bringing Lily her own in-law troubles which lead eventually to a hilarious climax. Last Will And Testament We, the class of 1959 of the Warsaw Central School, being of supposedly sound body, memory, and mindg do make, publish, and declare this our last will and testament, in the manner following, that is to say: First: Having duly spent the last four years in this building, we regretfully take leave of our friends and teachers. Grades ll E' R177 QWWN Q Q . 4' ix 'Cv- QU ,-if X x X XX Z vzy' QX A Tribute To Teachers MISS NORMA SCHLEGEL Grade .fuperviror Teachers: Mrs. Gardner, Mrs. Bartlett, Mrs. Eck In these days of Johnny can read or Johnny cannot read, of Sputniks, of emphasis upon science and of the crying demands of others not to neglect the humanities, it often seems as if the teacher is hopelessly caught in the middle of all the turmoil. It is with a sense of relief, however, that we step in- to the rooms of our school and watch the efforts of dedicated men and women who are honestly and sincerely trying to educate us. Our teachers, day by day, month after month, guide us through the mazes of learning, endure our epidemics of colds and com- municable diseases with us, and tolerate all of the stages of babyhood through adolescence and the psy- chological problems involved in each, in short, they are our second parents. With all of this in mind, it is with sincere re- spect that we pay this tribute to our teachers, and especially to those who have guided us so patiently through the formative days of our early youth. Composed of elected representatives from each class, seven through twelve, its organization parallels that of our federal government. Its officers are elected after a lively campaign which involves signed peti- tions, campaign speeches, registration and voting in a standard election booth. The Student Council provides an opportunity for student participation in making school policy. All other organizations are subject to the rulings of this body. It also has organized and established a system for awards distribution, which culminates in one of the final assemblies of the school year. There I shall tell you of the ancient Romans, their customs, their foods, their clothing, and their amuse- ments. I shall show you their homes, their schools, and that great Forum known so well in history. From me you will learn the principles of Latin grammar and speech. Although you will pass me by .M Quaetor L-- Pmezor ee- Scriba as you go on to greater things, you will never really lose me. It is with this in mind that Mr. Becker has organized the two newest clubs in our school. He is demonstrating that Latin can be fun, and his club members are receiving a new approach to an old old subject. Julian Club James Sodt ,M ,.e.........e,e ,,,,,,,,.-. ., ..,. STANDARD BEARERS MAXWELL SCHOOL OF CITIZENSHIP 1959 CONFERENCE 1958 James Loomis Carolyn Nettleship' David Shear, Einar Gall, Robert Wheeler, Penelope 1 Powers. There are many opportunities for special honors in our school other than the honor societies. The standard bearers, two members of the junior class, are selected each year on the basis of scholarship, character, and school citizenship. The boy is sent to Boys' State by the American Legion, and occasionally the girl is sent to Girls' State. Both standard bearers of 1957 - 1958 had this opportunity. Each year delegates from the junior and senior classes are selected for the Maxwell School of Citizenship Confer- ence at Syracuse. Eight went from Warsaw Central last year, four of whom are this year's seniors. The Wide Horizons program, under the guidance of the University of Rochester, has been initiated in our county this year. A select group of high school juniors and seniors from the county schools meets each month to be led into a better understanding of the great areas of human knowledge by professors from the University of Rochester. The Rennselaer award for 1959 was won by David Shear, and the Bausch and Lomb award, by Einar Gall. It is with considerable pride that we present some of our honored students. The traffic organization of our school is much more complicated and much better organized than many people realize. There are innumerable places, crossing roads and about the creek, where children could easily be seriously injured or killed. For years Mr. Wagenblass carried on a very effective student patrol group. These people guided the small child- ren at the various crossings, watched the bicycle stands, and kept watch at the two bridges over the creek. This year the village police chief, Mr. Bart- lett, has taken over the job of guiding this group. Their responsibilities are heavy, for we read daily accounts of casualties among small children going to and from school. Let us recognize and appreciate their true value as an important part of our school organization. Thi: page was rponrored by SCHWAB MOTOR SALES. ports 5? ? 6Q s' QE.g f Z qw ! This year, especially, will certainly go down in the history of Warsaw Central. For the first time since the early 1920's the Warsaw Tigers enjoyed an undefeated season. They also won the championships of Wyom- ing County and the Oatka Conference. Our hats are off to you, Tigers, in your year of years! We did this with many misgivings, fearing that it was a sac- rifice of space as far as our sponsors are concerned. We have been so pleased at the wonderful co-operation which they have given us. This has made it possible for our year- book to contain at least ten more pages of pictures and copy about our school. Without our patrons and advertizers it would be im- possible for us to sell our yearbook at a reasonable price, which allows over half of our student body to own books. It also permits us to publish a book which is more com- plete than thar produced by many schools of similar size, for we can also include our grades. With all of this in mind it is with sincere gratitude that we call your attention to the names below and urge you, our readers, to support them.
