Bank Row: Mr. Eddy, Dr. MacCallum, Mr. Glosser, Mr. Rowley, Mr. Regan. PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE When I reflect upon our educational system and ask myself-has Warsaw Central played its part in educating our children?-I turn to the alumni. I am proud that the alumni have con- tributed so much to our community and to our country. The children in our school today have fewer hardships, more opportunities, and more time to build character, improve personality and assimilate knowledge. I am sure, Alumni, that you will be proud of those who will soon join you. lgfifavee MR. BALL Principal 6 Uv 114: Weiagih, , A .Q '13 f ',w,w,. . W U Z NWQQM ,L- i, XX gb ' vt Y SHDIOFS ' class HISIOI2 In 1945 the class of '58 entered kindergarten with Miss Meyers as our teacher. Mary Ann cried for a whole week before she became accustomed to school. Tom Sim- mons was always chasing the girls and throwing blocks. The boys threatened to destroy the girls' playhouse, but Miss Myers said they would have to build another if they did. Not feeling ambitious, they gave up the idea. Here we learned the Elephant Song com- plete with motions. Somehow we managed to graduate into the first grade where we were separated into two rooms, Miss Hammond's and Mrs. Rich's. We learned how to use crayons and pencils fairly well here, and that year Shelley Stokes joined us. 1949 found our happy group in second grade. In Mrs. Wickens' room Dian Em- bury brought her musical teddy bear to school to play during rest period. The year was marked by our Pleasant Street project, an experiment in community living. In Miss Charles' room we read our Good Habit books and made a garden, and when anyone stepped out of line, the soap suds really flew. Third grade found us in Miss Stafford's and Miss Dick's rooms, where Susan Nicholson joined us. In Miss Stafford's class we discovered the amazing fact that we live on a ball which is constantly revolving without scattering the third grade into space. Miss Dick dressed Bruce Zeches and some of the other boys in girls' clothes as a punishment for talking too much. It was that year, also, that we started taking gym. Roger Brei and Jim Alfieri joined our class in the fourth grade as they had had enough of the class of '57. At once Mary Ann and Connie Fader were infatuated with Roge. Here the class spent the day cleaning windows, while the other section dodged the ruler. That year, also, many of our class began their musical careers with Mr. Harvey. In the fifth grade more romances started. We first noticed one when John Hoy kept chasing Bev Lundahl in initial tag. That year was also marked by the manufacture of salt maps, which we sampled at first and found were not exactly tasty. Mrs. Gardner neglected to add flavoring, and they were very salty. In the sixth grade we picked up a few more members and then at last we were in the seventh grade and junior high school. We felt very grown up, for we were allowed to go from room to room each period. The current romances that year were Clarice and Gayle, Trudy and Jim. However most of us were smothered in fractions and Indians, not to mention grammar and biographies. Mrs. Van Order enchanted us with all her fascinating stories in the eighth grade. We put on a Thanksgiving play without the pumpkins or the turkey. Instead there was plenty of com flakes and one confused audience. Judy Wickens made a darling grand- mother, and Mary Ann's rabbit was larger than she was. As ninth graders we held the honor of being the first freshman class to terrorize the new school. Susie Smith joined us from Pittsford that year, and she made a hit doing the Tennessee WigWalk at Jim's birthday party. Rog can really make good cake too. The highlight of our sophomore year was the Leap Year Dance. Life those first three years was a jumble of studies, dates, basketball games, dances, All-County and All- State, dates, football, candy sales, Blasts, baked food sales, intramurals, book reports, dates, dates and dates!! ! !! Finally we became seniors. The class of '58 has nearly reached its goal - to graduate in '58. The senior play, Father Knows Best, was a hilarious success, and the cast will not soon forget the days and nights spent in rehearsal. The year promises to be a busy one as we contemplate the future. As this goes to press, the Senior Ball and our Washington trip are still ahead of us. We are all looking forward now to that great day when we will don our caps and gowns and march forward to receive those coveted di- plomas. 'I2 EXECUUVES SENIOR Front to Buck: Pferident Tom Simmons Vice-Prerident Mary Reilly Secretary Suzanne Smith Treasurer Joan Schoenacker Student Council john Hoy Shellev Stokes Executive Committee R eprerentatiues Irving Baxter Mary Ann Smith Class Adzfiiorr Mr. Appleby Mr. Mauer The class of 1958 under the leadership of the president, Tom Simmons, Mr. Appleby and Mr. Mauer, our advisers, has had a most successful year. Each member has worked hard to earn enough money to go to Washington in the spring. As soon as the class and executive committee was organized, the magazine drive began. Every part of the village and town was covered in order to make sure that everyone was kept reading. As soon as the drive was over, the executive committee held its first meeting. At this meeting the committee set up a schedule for the whole year. All committees and chairmen were appointed for our money making projects. Our senior play Father Knows Best was the first scheduled activity. After two months of nightly rehearsals under the direction of Mrs. Hazlett, the play was presented with smashing success. In spite of Asian Flu, work schedules, and football, we had conquered the first hurdle in our year. Following the play came a card party, a fish dinner, the senior circus and the Senior Ball. All these projects were successful due to the work of the class and its advisers. Looking forward to Baccalaureate, Class Night and Graduation, we feel that the class of 1958 has been a credit to Wfarsaw Central, and hope that when we join the ranks of her alumni, we may do a good job, too, out in the wide, wide world. COACH DAVIS I The 1957-1958 Student Council began the year by electing its secretaries, Shelley Stokes and Mary Reilly, under the president, Maxine Regan. It then began actively discussing and trying to solve student problems in our school. The eighth period every Thursday is spent in going over these problems and in O.K.ing various proposed activities which the organizations of our school wish to carry out. The Council held a drive for the Goodwill Industries early in October. This was very successful. The monitor system in the halls has been revised and put into operation again. The Student Day which was successful in other years .will also be revived. On this day students, under the leadership of the teachers, will take over the school management, including the actual conducting of classes themselves. One of the most important and extensive pieces of work which the Council does each year is the operation of the point system. This involves' hours of hard clerical work and is a part of the awards system which the Student Council organized a few years ago. The man who is most responsible for our well run organization is Coach Davis. Much of the credit for the position which the Student Council holds in our school can be definitely attributed to him. We owe him our sincere thanks. 59 i l ' ,Y Aa Qi' as W .N fa 'Qin .. The administration and the teachers founded it for the purpose of creating an enthusiasm for superior scholarship, developing loyal pupil citizenship, stimulating a desire to serve faithfully ones school, community and country, promoting trustworthy leadership and developing character in our seventh, eighth and ninth grades. The requirements for membership are based upon five points: scholarship Ca 90? averagej , leadership, character, school citizenship and service. The National Honor Society participated in the first initiation of these students, and a tea was served to parents and members afterward. With the twenty-eight charter members above, we are hoping for great results. 61 .- fs ' ' 2 2- A Q I 1 - -. 3 . Following this, sev- eral one and two room schools were established about the village in various places on South Main, Brooklyn, Genesee and North streets. In 1846 these were consolidated and a cobblestone school, which is now the Masonic temple, was built at a cost of 31500. In 1853 an academical department was ingrafted and an addition was made to the building. In 1873 a new building on Buffalo Street brought together the pupils from the academy and branch schools and cost the taxpayers 340,000 In 1914 this building was revamped and a 359,000 new front added. This school was the one in which most of us got the early years, or all, of our education. In 1954 the old building was razed and a new 32,185,000 school uniting 21 others into a central school was built. ga f. Douglas Rudgers Patricia Rudgers Sharon Salamone It has given us, the staff of The Blast, the utmost pleasure to include our alumni from the years 1877 through 1957 in this year's volume. As we have poured over these lists of former graduates, we have been proud to see there the names of many who have been, and still are, influential in our community, our state and our nation. We note the number of doctors, lawyers, teachers, and scientists as well as those who form the backbone of our nation in agriculture and industry. We remember also those who have lost their lives in the service of our country and those who have and still do work faithfully in the branches of our state and federal government. We know that many of you attribute a large part of your success to the foundation which you received in your elementary and high school days. Those educators of your past whose names mean much to you had a very large share in your de- velopment. Men like David Starr Tordaru to whom Herbert Hoover referred as one of America's great teachers , E. P. Harris of Amherst Conege, caued Mary Vigneri james White jon Wickens Avis Wolcott Paul Zeches Peter Zydel the father of American College Chemistry, H. F. Wright of Cortland Normal, Irving Smith of New York State Board of Regents, Anna Sill and Madam Sophronia Broughten - all played an active part in the early history of Warsaw schools. We cannot name them all, but let us recall such fine teachers as Anna Paschke, Nettie Service, Gertrude Stearns, Mary Waterbury, Lillian Pritchard, Floyd Bartlett, George Glasier, Esther and Charles Smallwood, Herbert Preston, Elizabeth Bishop, Mary Canty, Belle Miller, Margaret O'Donnell, Nellie Johnson, Albert Albro, as well as those retired teachers who are still part of our community lives: Phoebe Robinson, Olive Charles, Iva Chase and Florence Donlon. There are many others who still reside in our village under other names or in other occupations than those which they had when you knew them here. We have also compiled for your information a list of the principals who have served you since 1853. Richard K. Sandford rr.. V, 1853 1854 T. C. Seldon - Spring - 1875 H. F. It is only through their generous contributions that we are able to publish a yearbook which is more complete than those of many schools of similar size in our area. It is also the result of their backing that we are enabled to sell our book at such a reasonable price, thereby making it possible for over half of our student body to own a copy. By agreeing to this form of listing, our patrons have made it possible for us to have more pages available for school activities. It is with real sin- cerity that we wish to express our gratitude to them and urge you, our readers, to support them. Electronics Timers Mr. and Mrs. William Embury Faculty Club Dr. and Mrs. F.T.
