Highlighting the season for the Gurnee squad was that 6-6 tie with Gravslakes champs and. with a little luck. the Blue Devils could have registered a 6-O victory. The Rams tied it up in the final three minutes of play when John Gurley scooped up a fumble and raced 50 vards to score. Vi'arren's tvvo defeats were suffered at the hands of Lake Forest. 19-12. and Grant. 20-O. The Blue Devils registered triumphs over Ela-Vernon. 26-201 Antioch. 21-6: XY'auconda. 3340 and Round Lake 32-0, FIQGETT STAR PERFORMER Featured in the success of the team was the stellar all- around play of Bob Eugett. versatile 190 senior fullback. who copped the conference scoring title with 57 points. Bob also was on the firing end of seven passes that netted 217 yards and four touchdowns. Rushing. Eugett picked up 528 yards in 78 carries for an average of 7.04. Also featured in the NX'arren backfield were johnny Richardson. junior halfback. who netted 291 yards in 37 carries for a 7.8 average and Matt Turpel, another iunior halfback. who chalked up 194 yards in 56 rushing attempts for an average of 5.39 while also catching four passes for 67 yards. Another youngster. who promises to be one of the key performers at V'arren in 1958. is Pierce CCorkyj W'hite. who alternated at quarterback with Gil Hanson and com- pleted 13 passes in 22 attempts for 214 yards and three touchdowns, Nick Gowe was on the receiving end of six spirals that netted 279 yards and three touchdowns. Str As ang and Don sistant Varsity ophomore gridders build up and give actual playing experience to future varsity material. ur Little Devils had material that was the best in the Northwest Conference. The Sophs' heavy line and aggressive backfield proved too much for many conference foes. This was evident when they finished the seas0n's competition with an enviable record of six wins and two losses, the latter two by identical scores, 7-6. iling up 156 points against the opponents' 33, this squad packed plenty of scoring punch. Al Mordhorst, speedy halfback, scored 80 of these, nine of his TD's coming as a result of being on the receiving end of Chuck Trigger Bratzke's swing passes. The apt generalship, deception, and running ability of quarterback Gerry Mateja, together with such hard running backs as Tom Cassidy, Lloyd Sickles, and jim Cricket Stephens gave the Sophs a sextet of ball carriers that were the equal of any in the league. aving such stalwart linemen as Dennie Biggs, Les Cunningham, jim Holt, Dennie jessen, Gary Sebastian, Dennie Smith, Gay Strahan, and Monty Snuffy Yates available for front line duty was the key to success for this squad. urely no squad could have a winning season without reserves, and the twelve lads who took the back seat but who on the practice field made the first team what it was, deserve the plaudits of a job well done. -COACH BILL SOUZA I ,X 1 V IEE .4 ww gulamg h ma at-Q .1sicf'wFYw:f+.,-zf..,u A . ?w4'7 .1 Fir!! rout J. The local boys won the State Regional Basketball championship, and the ovation given by the tearn's followers could not have been much greater, if Warren had won the state crown. Far and wide, everyone is proud of the Blue Devils, who represent one of the smal- lest school in Northern Illinois. Even if the squad gets no further in state competition, the performances of .Mike Galgan's Blue De- vils will long be remembered. The team won the regional flag by defeat- ing Evanston in a hair-raising 57-55 thriller before a record crowd in the Waukegan High school gym. Close to 2,000 Warren fans were present, and the cheering they gave the win- ners was tremendous. Many spectators insist the huge gymnasium shook. Before tackling Evanston, Warren High defeated New Trier and Waukegan in the first two steps of the regional contest. The Blue Devils are now automatically en- tered in the State Sectional contest and will play Elgin Thursday night at Arlington Heights. There will also be a game at the Arlington sectional between Maine I Des Plainesl and Barrington. This game is sche- duled for Wednesday. If Warren's Blue Devils conquer Elgin, they will then have a play-off game on Fri- day with the winner of the Maine-Barrington game, and if they are victors of this contest, they will emerge as State Sectional champ- ions, and one of the Sweet 16 teams in Illinois. The Warren team has a won-lost record of 22-4, and Elgin, its sectional opponent has es and lost 7. As basketball fans await next Thursday nights big game, many are recalling the the great basketball sensation a few years back, when Hebron won the state champion- ship. Hebron, which is located near Rich- mond at the state line, is one of the smallest schools in the state, and members of the championship team are still carrying fame. If the spirit and enthusiasm, that is being shown today thruout Lake county, as a re- sult of Warren's outstanding accomplish- ments, is any indication of what might pre- vail, Warren's Blue Devils may equal He- bron's triumph. And there are many Warren fans who are confident the Blue Devils can do it. Warren Has Anolber Nifty Frosh Cutfit Back in 1954-55, Warren prep 'basketball fans were talking about Coach Veme GoWe's fresh- man squad, which had just com- pleted a highly successful sea- son with 15 victories in 18 games. Four members of that squad, Alden Rudin. Nick Gowe. Tom .Hannula and Jay Threadgill, are starters on the current North- west Suburban championship ag-' gregation which recently made a shamble of conference and coun- ty scoring records. WON ll OF 15 Today, Gurnee fans are point- ing tn another freshman squad, this one coached by Bill Souza. which recently completed its 1957-4 58 season with 11 triumphs in 15 rencounters and maintained a 49.8 lavcrzeging in scoring 747 points. Their only defeats were suffered at the hands of Libertyville, 59-525 Lake Forest, 38-365 Ela-Vernon, 45-39 and Grayslake, 50-29. I Featured in the success of thel current Gurnee yearlings havel been five boys, 6-Shi Stan Flood,l 6-1 Moose Williams, 5-8 Ken Jer- mac, 5-7 Len Lahey and 5-5 Lar- ry Beshal. Both Beshel and Flood were moxed up to the Frosh-Sopb Squad for their last three games, john Grom. jerry Parks. and Dick Strang were adequate replacements.
