The athletic fund was so deep in the red that the Won 8 Lost 3 practice field instead of making their usual trip to Camp Chickagami. The season started off poorly as the Rifflemen dropped their opener to the Cleveland Collinwood Railroaders 12-7. Warren roared back in the final period after trailing 12-O to push over a tally but failed to take advantage of a blocked kick in the last minute. It was a dreary prelude to a smashing season. The next Friday was an entirely different story. Our old friends from Canton McKinley dropped in to pay us a visit and when they went home they took with them their worst defeat in twenty years, a 45-6 drubbing. Canton was the pre-game favorite but no one had realized how far the Bulldogs had slipped from last season. Then there was another little factor which contributed to the final result. A certain Mr. Rogers, who had carried the ball but four times against Collinwood, ran wild against Canton. He carried the ball ten times from scrimmage and racked up l9l gained yards. Included in that were runs of 62 and 58 yards for tallies. The victory was also a tribute to Warren's fine defensive platoon which allowed the once- mighty Cantonites but two yards net gained rushing. Meafba11 Williams-skirts the onrush of Massillon players. T- u Next we played host to Farrell, Pennsylvania. The Penn- sylvanians were undefeated and on their way to a very suc- cessful season which was to see them crowned Western Penn- sylvania Champions. Going into the fourth quarter the score was tied 6-6 but when the final gun went off Warren had knocked a smashing 26-6 triumph. Dave Rogers continued his fine play by adding three scores to the Night Raiders' fate. Then came the game that we try to forget-that Mans- field episode! The Tigers, a decided underdog, capitalized on breaks to stop four Warren first-half drives within their twenty-yard line. The game seemed headed for a scoreless deadlock when Warren broke loose with only 2 minutes 50 seconds to go. Then driving 65 yards in five plays, Rogers scored from the five. Pesanelli's placement was no good. Mansfield bounced back and hit the jackpot on two long passes. Their tying touchdown came with only a minute to go and a successful placement attempt put Warren behind. The Panthers were down but not out. Seem hit Merolla and Reed with long passes to put the pigskin on the Tigers' 33. Warren scored in every I period to hand the Red Devils their worst beating in a decade, 41-2. Warren rolled up 305 yards on the ground while Campbell had a net yards gained of thirteen. Rogers and Gear each had a pair of scores and Curt even scored for Memorial when he was tackled in the end zone. Included in the Rifflemen's tally was a 71 yard jaunt by Dave Rogers. The Warren gridders got ready for the all-important Massillon tilt by dumping Alliance 40-6. Warren gave the Alliance players and fans a preview of things to come by tallying twice in the first seven minutes. The fine play of Don Seem and Dave Rogers highlighted the game. Seem completely outshone highly-talented Len Dawson as he pitched for three scores, completing 8 out of 12 as compared to 12 out of 32 for Dawson. In view of this, one can understand the shock Warren fans got when they viewed the All Conference Team selections. Bryant carried one of Seem's pitches 63 yards for the first tally. A big, cocky, unbeaten, Massillon Tiger team came to town to teach this nervous Warren team a lesson. State Champions for three straight years and unbeaten in their last 20 games, the mighty Mathermen had plenty to be confident about. Hadn't they beaten Mansfield 54-0 the week after Mansfield dropped Harding? But a hard-fighting, never-say-die Warren thought differently and proved their point to the hearty satisfaction of 12,000 delirious fans who packed Harding stadium to overflowing. Fans ex- perienced a real spine tingler when Warren capitalized on four Massillon fumbles to score the upset of the year 19-13. The first half was evenly played. The visitors rallied to tie the score at 13-13 after Warren took a 13-0 lead. But the second half was an entirely different story. Although the Rifflemen scored but once, they missed several other scoring opportunities. The defeat was a sound one and even the most rabid Massillon fans had to admit they were outplayed. After the final gun sounded a mob scene broke loose. It took a police escort to get the team off th.e field. Many of the players took a worse beating on the way to the dressing room than in the game. The celebrating lasted until the wee hours of the morning. Panther Emergency Men-C. Quinby, I. Logue, D. Dyer, W. Brown and B. Wilson keep the team well supplied. In a blinding snowstorm Warren played host to oft-beaten Erie Academy. Continuing the fine play they exhibited the previous week Warren humiliated the Academy, rolling up a 65-6 score. It was the biggest romp for Harding since 1931. The victors scored in every period with Dave Rogers heading the parade, scoring four times. Curt Gear got things off on the right foot by returning the opening kickoff 78 yards for the first of 7 TD's. History almost repeated itself when Gear took the second half kickoff on the Warren 20 and raced through the Erie team only to have the ball squirt out of his hand on the Erie 35. Even little Don Seem got in the scoring act, pulling a quarterback sneak over from the 12. Late in the game Coach Biffle tried to ease up on Erie by sending in a sophomore squad. But the sophs gave the bossman a pleasant surprise by engineering the final tally, Preston scor- ing from the three. Stonewall Defense-held the opposition to 8 points a game. FRONT-D. Martin, I. The Down-staters may not have played the best but they certainly played the most questionable football seen in Warren in a long, long time. Although beaten 13-12, the game was a fine tribute to Warren's clean play and to the training which they have received from the coaching staff. The game was one of those that could have gone either way. Pesanelli missed two placements and a field goal. Other important factors were two costly Warren fumbles, a spectacular passing attack that covered 76 yards only to be spiked by the gun ending the second halt, a third period thrust that ended on the nine, and a pass interception by the Big Red on its own 21 in the last ten minutes. Steubenville tallied the game winner on a 65-yard run in the last period. The deciding extra point was scored on a line buck. Warren bounced back to score in the last five minutes, Rogers going 15-yards. Pesanelli's placement try was high and wide and the visitors held their edge for the last 5 minutes. Barely missing-the outstretched hand of a Canton McKinley player, D. Stroup gathers steam as he drives for the goal line. Successful breakthrough-in Farrell game, demonstrated by D. Rogers, ends with a fumble. Sandwiched between-two Massillon players, R. Bryant slashes off yard- age in the Tiger upset. Sidestepping-a hopeful Alliance tackler, C. Gear picks up a first and ten. Pesanelli, lines up an extra point. Driving Dave Rogers-is Ohio's top fullback for 1951. Sensational passing by Don Seem gave Warren a 27-7 victory over Toledo Waite. Seem passed to Steve Leigh for the first tally and jump-passed to Bryant who raced 35 to break a 7-7 tie in the second quarter. Dave Rogers tallied the final pair of T. D.'s to notch Warren's seventh victory in ten starts. Toledo gave the Panthers a much stiffer fight than the scoreboard indicated and Warren's superior scoring power was the difference. In the traditional Thanksgiving Day game with Niles, David Rogers closed out his scholastic career with a display of power as he led Warren in a 27-O whitewash over Niles. Dave tallied three times and drove for 238 net yards through a tough Red Dragon squad. Warren drove 83 yards in the opening period, Rogers going the last yard for the score. War- ren scored twice in less than a minute in the second quarter capitalizing on a pair of pass interceptions. Rogers scored the first from the eleven and hard-working defensive end Iohn Krafcik got into the act by grabbing a fumbled lateral and dashing 23 yards for a score. And so the curtain rang down on the '5l season. It was truly a year to be remembered. Space should be made in Harding's Hall of Fame, for several new heroes have been born. Dave Rogers, lim Marco, George Nicula, Elmer Yencho- chik, cmd Don Seem have added their names to the scroll of Panther grid imrnortals. 107 Running skill-is displayed by D. The sophomores started oft on the right foot by dumping Cuyahoga Falls 36-6. In their first home appearance Iim Rogers tallied all three T. D.'s as the Marcarellomen blanked Sharon, Pennsylvania 20-0. Included in the trio was a 98-yard run from scrimmage. But if Rogers shocked Sharon, he did more than that to Youngstown Wilson when he scored five touchdowns against them. It looks as if the name Rogers is going to remain in Warren's vocabulary. The fans who followed the sophomores to Massillon came home convinced that although Massillon had the biggest score, Warren had the better team. The Tigers scored in the last three and one-half minutes against Warren's second team to take a thriller 13-12. The sophomores were well-represented at varsity games with I. Rifile, N. Angelo, D. Venetta, D. Preston, and I. Rogers seeing considerable action. Five triumphs came nowhere near quenching our tenth graders' thirst for victory and the gridiron menu for the next two years can certainly be eagerly anticipated. The team looked good on many occasions, but didn't play consistent ball. Shortness was an ailment that made control of the backboard difficult. The Cubs dropped their first four games and then rebounded on Niles, winning 56-42. After this Win the team started clicking and downed Girard 55-31, Akron 37-32, and Youngstown Rayen 54-50. The Cubs lost ten games of the season. Six of these losses were by five points or less. Coach Lou Kemp drilled his reserves dili- gently every night, but failed to get a winning combination. The Reserves owed their losses to poor ball handling, usually in the late minutes of the game. The team, however, play- ed much better ball than the records show. Two games were lost by a single basket. ln the Girard game the Reserve Five dis- played their best winning form. The Cub pass- ing was sharp and the Girard cagers never threatened. Soon after graduation Kemp's best material was moved up to the varsity, and he renewed his teambuilding efforts. The Reserve season ended with a 65-56 loss to Massillon. FRONT+E. DelGarbino, B. The 1951 track team, featuring Bob Latimer and Bill Heed as the star speedsters, turned in one of the best records in the history of Harding High. Under the leadership of their new coach, Mr. Iohnson, they were able to roll up a season record of four Wins and no losses. ln our win column was the outstanding victory over Niles, which was the greatest romp since our track competition began. In the first triangular meet of the season, Warren swamped Struthers and Youngstown as Coach Iohnson's harriers captured ll of the 14 events on the program to pile up 92 points. The Warren Cindermen journeyed to the district meet at Salem with little hope of even coming close to winning. But when they left the meet, they carried with them the North- eastern Ohio Conference championship. The trackrnen piled up 36-1X5 points to defeat a field of 26 Ohio schools. The district title hinged upon Warren's mile relay team, the final event on the program. As the first baton was passed it looked as though Warren might lose for they trailed by 30 yards. But Bob Latimer swept into the lead in the stretch of the second lap to put the team in the lead. The other milers of the relay team are Ed Dillon, Salvi Merolla and George Glenn. Meet-Akron The Panther two-milers-ran into difficulty scheduling opponents: therefore, they started in only three meets. Football practice kept Coach Iohnson busy, but Arthur Cofield took charge of the team and turned in an excellent job. Every night during September and Octo- ber the rubber-legged two-milers worked out either at Harding or Packard Park. In the opening meet, Cofield led the pack with a Winning time of 13 minutes 9.5 seconds. Canton O. S. C. first Won the district baseball champion- ship. Under the direction of Coach Louis Kemp, the 1951 Harding baseball team turned in the finest season in the school's his- tory. The diamondmen recorded 18 victories against one loss. The only setback came at the hands of Portsmouth, Harding's first and last opponent at the Regional Tournament. Previous to the Portsmouth affair, Warren had won the Ohio Scholastic Conference crown at Canton, the District Title at Youngstown, and the championship of the Mahoning Valley League for the third year. Although the backbone of the 1950 pitching staff had been graduated, the Panthers received adequate replacements in Roger Rodzen, Bob Delida, and Ioe Sabino. Rodzen was cred- ited with seven victories including a one-hitter and a two- hitter at the district tournament. Sabino turned in some fine hurling but hurt his arm after pitching a no-hitter against Youngstown Chaney and was relegated to the outfield. Roger Bryant, the shortstop, led the batsmen with a robust .460 average. Bill White, the first sacker, copped the team homerun championship. Warren had an unusually good year in the field. During the Ohio Scholastic Conference tournament, the Kempmen turned in one of those baseball rarities, a triple play. Lyx1'243 N ness Hats off--to the 1951 hit'n run champs. FRONT-D. Stroup, R.
