The Walpole Vars1ty, cont the best games of the year they lost to Bxlas 45 43 before many exc xted Walpole fans Wlnchester and Troy agam offered the team dogged opposition A surprxsmgly easy wm over Troy February twelfth cmched the Chicks a game m the tourney playoffs The last game of the year at Charlestown was played nn Charlestown s new gym wh1ch was rushed to completlon for the event The Walpole team held nts own for three pertods and then Charlestown pulled ahead never to be overtaken by the Ch1cks The xndxvldual scormg this year has been as follows B111 Houghton 365 pomts Tom Klnxry 142 pomts Donald Houghton 176 points G1b Chandler 111 points Arthur H111 109 points Billy Kopacz 83 pomts Duck Murray 12 pomts Bob Cobb 57 pomts James Audet ll pomts and Clarence Houghton 8 points The highest team score was 85 pomts against Hinsdale The team scored 1 lll pomts ln twenty games wxth an average of 55 6 pomts per game against their opponents 788 pomts and average of 39 4 pomts per game B111 Houghton hlt 33 pomts agamst Hillsdale for the hxghest individual score of the season and finished the regular schedule with an 18 3 average per game The team all feels that without the coachmg and the help of Mr Desmaraxs that every thmg would be a dzfferent story No one s troubles or problems are too large or small for Dana O Nenll has done an excellent job as manager of the team this year as have Jack Crehore and Mr McCool an dtlxgently scormg the games Much of the success of this year s team has to be gwen to the new gym whxch our boys are so fortunate to have The convenience of the gym for practice plus the modern equip ment xncludmg spacxous locker rooms and showers certainly has xnfluenced greatly our wuuungs The team as well as the entire school certainly appreciates the contrxbutxons of those who have made these advantages possible Gzrls Varszty Cont The Chxcklets scored 500 to the opponents 492 points m their seventeen games Out of the 500 pomts the records nndxcate Becky Graves was hzgh scorer w1th 140 potnts and Kay Whitman second w1th 105 poxnts The highest percentage of foul shots 52 3 IS found m Kay Whitman s record the second h1ghest 50 percent rn Barbara O Brien s It might be send that the girls would have had more victories 1f the foul shot percentage had been higher Perhaps the gxrls have been too apprecxatwe of the beautiful floor they have because their record at away games seems to show too great a fondness for vlctorxes for the home court The girls have all appreciated the excellent guidance of thexr coach Mrss Frances V Weeks and the efftcxency of themr manager Phyllis Yamzyn The Gzrls Junior Varvzty Alstead Home Won 13 8 Away Won 32 26 Bellows Falls Home Won 16 8 Away Lost 19 16 Warner Homes Home Won Contmued on page 45 43 O Coach, who is always willing to extend a helping hand to the boys. 0 ! The Cheerleaders KNEELING Left to Right Mary Aylward Substitute Eloise Hewitt Carol Cutler Patricia Mornssey STANDIDKI Kay Menard Head Cheerleader Ann Rogers Laura Thayer ABSENT Jane Howard The peppy cheerleaders this year under the helpful guidance oi Mrs Russell Galloway have proved by thexr actions on the floor and off the floor that the school should certainly be proud of them With a much greater variety of novel cheers and routines they have aroused the crowd s spzrxt and enthusxasm for the Walpole team Although most of the acclaim naturally goes to the victorious players everyone wants the girls to know that thexr practices and attractwe presentations have made a hit with fans and op ponents ahke The pert Patrxcxa Mornssey a Senior and veteran cheerleader has been chosen by the cheer leaders themselves to represent the school in the Manchester Umon Cheerleader contest The Girls' Junior Varsity, cont Barbara Licence and Carole Graves were chosen as the co captains of the Jayvee Team Al though their schedule was short, due to the dxffzculty nn scheduling games, they lost only one game There are many promxsxng players here for the Varsity next year In all, there was a very large turnout of gn-ls for basketball this year, but wnth several meh gxble because of cheerleading or other reasons, only eleven gurls remained for the Jumor Varsity The experience of playmg on a team has given the gurls an Important advantage for forming the team another year 45 .5 1 i vi V fx' - f 2 nz . 5 , 4 , .e e s , W gi r p f n ? f . ,6 si , o E 5 , .1 2. 5 Q 1 1 I 0 0 , I . . . . , I 1 . . . , . . -
