The Capital It is a natural reaction when first entering Walnut Hills to be struck by the numbers of people, by the diversity of backgrounds, and by the differences between ourselves and everybody else. The first reaction is to try to fit in, one which is soon replaced by a need to be different. As we grow, however, we feel that almost everyone here can be found in the wide spectrum of the middle classes. One is no longer struck by the differences between ourselves and everyone else, but by the similarities. Although we may be reluctant to admit it, when we leave Walnut Hills, there is more about us that is alike than is different. Wainut Hills exists as a place for academic excellence. Therefore, it is natural that the most universal common bond between groups of all ages and levels of achieve- ment is a certain dedication to learning. Although everybody's personal goals of learning may not be academic, study is one experience we all have in common. The process of self and group education is an experience we all have in common. Our personal approaches to this learning is what makes us different. 12 The true uniqueneSS within us comes out when we break from the mold, when we detach ourselves from the group. When we focus our attention on individuals rather than the group as a whole, we begin to achieve this valuable in- dividuality in ourselves. When the focus is moved within ourselves, and the perspective this allows is applied to others, then we can truly say that we are individuals. Through the eyes of the group, everyone is part of a set of mass- produced beings. Through our own eyes turned inward and outward, each of us becomes 'tone human being, . .unique in all the world, E1. Ir . V V. I expected much more difficulthr in working with such a young cast. But everyone pu ed to ether to put together a good show. These wor s, spoken by assistant director Elliot Shapiro, sum up the feelings of anyone who was involved with OKLAHOMA. OKLAHOMA is- considered a dancers' show by most, known for its distinctive choreo raphy and ballet scenes. To this cast, a group of fancers was gathered together who were, in the words of choreo apherJulie Emden about the best I've seen in any 5 ow at Walnut Hills. This cast was effectively coordinated by Director Vicki Welsh and Vocal Director Don Basone, both of whom were very pleased with the end result. Altogether, OKLAHOMA followed in the tradition of excellent musicals at Walnut Hills. - r-q;L+a.Iin--vv-V'JE4-.rsf'frr-'e 5 . 3'. . 60 Activities Andy Berghausen Brian Crow Paul Flaspohler Leo Fontana Charley Frank Megan Hawgood Heather Hines Karen Husman David Jacobs Ginny Levi John Lowry Marcus Lynch Michelle Lynsky Steven Newbem Vate Powell Vicki Roth David Thomas Richard Trenz Stuart Wheaten Production Staff Director Vocal Director Rehearsal Accompanists Assistant Director Sam Will Cord Elam Ali Hakim Will Aunt Eller Gertie Ado Annie Carl Laurey Carnes Skidmore- Laurey Jud Fry Fred Ado Annie Curly Slim Chalmers Vicki Welsh Ben Basone Anastasia Shudra Judy Montag Elliot Shapiro Activities 61 62 Activities Under the direction of co- heads Lee Ligon and Brian Bryant, the tradition of Walnuts was reinstated at Walnut Hills this year. In April of 1982, physical education teacher, Diane Rappaport, had the experience of par- ticipating in this notable event. In order to qualify for the Boston Marathon, Mst Rap- paport ran in the Pace Maker Marathon in Ludiow, Kentucky. This race, which was Rappa ort's first marathon, too place in Oc- tober, 1981, and had her time of 3 hours and 15 minutes was fast enough to allow her to race in the Boston Marathon. Ms. Rap- aport has also run in the ouisville Marathon twice, in which her 1982 time was 3 hours and 7 minutes. Rappaport usually trains by runnin 70 miles a week. She usualy runs 7 miles a day, and on one day a week she runs 15 to 20 miles, and on another she concen- trated on uphill running. According to Rappaport, her preparation for the Boston Marathon was more rewarding to her than the actual race itself. She believes that the race taught her ' to organize her time better, and she is happy that she is able to do something, such as running, continuously. The money raised, we began to concentrate on class Spirit, and after a mid-year revival, our goal was reached with the help of many enthusiastic students and advisor, Mrs, Walker.
