The per- formances which the audience saw were the culmination of many long hours of practice which began the previous summer. All of the members of the band and drill team attended a one week summer camp in West Virginia near the end of August. The Walnut Hills Marching Band participated in a variety of competi- tions and halfwtime performances. The band had a successful season e plac- ing second in the Norwood band com- petition, finishing an overall fifth in Music Bowl IV, a top quality competi- tion, and finally, winning the Presi- dentts Cup at the UC Homecoming Parade. After a long grueling season of blood, sweat, tears, blisters and frozen fingers, it all came to an end after the Roger Bacon game. The final band highlight was the annual party which was held this year aboard the Chaperone Party Boat. 24 - Activities Activities 25' Ehotography Club 5. a 0, oaoo Ix O 0 ' I G 9. f ...' Activities CHOIRS P Activities - 39 D m c d O M 41 s e m .N t C A The highlight of this yearhs fall was October with a multitude of activities. Homecoming featured the second an- nual pig kissing events but with a strange new twist. The nClass of eighty-two was evident in the top hat and champagne of their float. The younger class was not lucky enough to find a trailer thus farcing bearers into service. Meanwhile the games con- tinued with the final victory going to a bunch of brash youngsters. Halloween bxought out the usual groupies, hoodlums and weirdos. All in all, Pm looking forward to next fall with baited breath. In a flash development, Farmer Dave Bibee's pig Black Beauty turns on him much to the crowd's amusement. 42 h Activities Activities 43 BROTHERHOOD WEEK Brotherhood Week, the main project of Students Incorporated. was actually the second and third weeks of February. Under Student Inc. president Marilyn Oldhamts expert direct tinn. a wide range of events were planned, designed to Empmve understanding between dil- ferent peoples. During assemblies, speakers Ken Biackwell, David Mann, and Leslie Isaiah Gaines advised Walnut Hills students to work hard, recognize the needs of others and become involved members of the community. Most appreciated were Gaines pithy comments admonishing: don't rap if you cantt read and work on your aptitude, not your raptitude. In addition. profiles of famous black people were presented over the PA. and a group of Walnut Hills gospel singers performed. Although some doubted the effectiveness of these kinds of activities in that they draw distinctions between blacks and whites, it seems quite im- portant that everyone understand the ideas and needs of others. 44 h Activities Students Incorporated Students Incorporated is the new name for the Black Cultural Workshop. The organization is responsible for activities that main- tain ethnic culture. It's biggest pro- ject was Black History and Brotherhood week during February. This year in addition to the usual theatrical productions, there were severa'l unusual happenings at Walnut Hills. A traveling troupe of Israeli dancers danced exotic dances through the hallowed halts. A group of wandering gypsies disguised themselves as junior high students and performed their traveling show at elementary schools throughout Cincinnati. In addition to these groups assorted other personages made their appearance Charlie Chaplin, Groucho Marx, Zero Mostel and W. C. Fields gave benefit performances with proceeds going to the Support Ancient Comedians Fund. Special guest poets Vergil and Petrarch held poetry readings on the com- mons. A little known Russian circus set up its tents on the circle and gave a number of performances to delighted students. A favorite was the lion that allowed Mr. Shepherd to put his head inside its cavernous mouth. Also in the cavalcade of cultural phenomena were a band of minstrels, three fortune tellers and a special group art show by Rembrandt, Picasso and Raphael. To finish off the year on a happy note, The Rolling Stones were the featured group at Prom. Activities 7 65 THE SALT MINER PRICE 2'56 A SCHOLASTIC .IOLFRNAL ISSUE 1, 1 WALNUT HILLS HIGH SCHOOL There exists a need for a journal which asks why and how rather than telling whaL where. and when. The Salt Miner is such a jnurnal. It is an open opportunity to gain insight into each nther's thoughts. feelings. and dreams. It repre- sents a chance to communicate in print and. thus. to develop each other's tolerance for new or different ideas and to much each other'slives in a personal. but universal. sense. It has been said that sociology is the realization that one's troubles and problems are not individual. Those who seek answers must strive to communicate accurately; for the only way good answem are obtained is through the combined input and analysis of many. When individuals raise ques- tions that many share they must stretch their minds to understand other's views. Through the written word. a potentially numerous audi- ence can be exposed to equally numerous new ideas and questions. A forum for writing can act as a catalyst. It can cause people to question each ptheris answers and ideas. It can generate interest which causes people to formulate new ideas and answers. Hence. the creation 01' the Salt Miner. This year, The Saltminer, an iiunderground newspaper mad the same name from a time of greater liberal activity at Walnut Hiiis, January, 1982 Thisjournal is not meant to be a time machine that. transports the reader back into the 1960's. It is true that much of the activity in the 1960's has a desperate.1ingering appeal for the idealist today. Yet. there is something new hanging in the air. Many of the members of the Sesame Street Generation are waking up - not in the anti-everything 60.5 sense, but in a new. per- haps more constructive wayi Applause, ap- plause . . .Jife is our cause seems to apply more to the young people of the 80's than to the adoV lescents 0f the 605. The Salt Miner is a re- Hection of this new constructive. intellectual change. In this journal questions will be ex- pressed which are as old as time itself. Like nther generations. our generation is attempt- ing to discover real answers tn these questions. We chose to do so in a thoughtful intellectual fashion. The Salt Miner is a tremendous experiment; It is clay in any cnntributnris hands. It is up to the contributors to shape iL to stretch the clay in all directions. We are here tn learn from each other. We are allowed to write. as Virginia Woolf did. undeniable. everlasting. contradic- tory things 2 its appearance at Walnut Hills. A revival of a radical leaflet of the paper was designed to give any senior high student an op- portunity to express his or her views on virtually any subject. Our 10-33 record was very good con- sidering our tough schedule and the youth of the team. We had only 5 seniors this year, the rest being juniors and sophomores. We were rated in the top 10 in the city throughout the season, and we finished at number 11. The season was a learning experience for everybody. Improvement during the season was very evident. The players were well spirited, hard working, and knew what had to be done. With 8 of the starting 11 back next year, I'm looking forward to a much better season for the team. Sports 121 iWetre Irate Over Eightt Students Protest the Addition of an Eighth Period to the School Day HWe're Irate over Eight. Last year this was a familiar slogan among Walnut Hills students who protested the School BoarcPs unilateral ac- tion which would add an additional class period to the school day. In this manner each class period would be shortened by 5 minutes and teachers could be required to teach a 6th period. SAVE tStudents Active for a Viable Educa- tion?! was a student organized group composed of 10 students who wanted to maintain the uni- que position of Walnut Hills. The Student Con- gress organized meetings, sent a delegation to the Parents Board and distributed petitions. Also, students wrote the local papers, express- ed their concern to their School Board members, and organized a public meeting with the Activity Committee of the School Board. Next, SAVE suggested that students voice their opposition by attending the next School Board meeting. Disillusioned with the downtown administration's response, SAVE decided to proceed with a full scale walkouUsitin. The walkout provided students with a unique opportunity to express their interest in educa- tionai goals. The walkout had a variety of results: over 500 students peacefully par- ticipated in the walkout; the media turnout was excellent; yet, the action was never reversed. Although the students of Walnut Hills lost the battle, it showed the central administration that we would not simply take a passive role in our educationfi observed one participant. The opinions remain mixed; however, most still con- tend that t'Our education was worth the fight. 124 - Zenith Zenith g 125 126 - Zenith In Review Lady Diana mesmerizes the world . . .Egyptis during a mllltary parade... ..U 8. planes .. -. .5: f but fall short' 1n their , , G L If: We are going to i IX; .wther . . As we grew together in that short time and learned to appreciate more the traditions that make Walnut Hills a unique opportunity in learning, we saw many changes occur.
