I left my folks and friends with the aim to clear my mind. I hit the rowdy road, and many kinds I met there, many stories told me of the way to get there. So, on and on I go, the seo- onds tiok the time out. There's so muoh left to know and I'm on the road to find out. In the end I'II know, but on the way I'Il wonder, through descending snow, and through the frost and thunder. I listen to the wind come howl, telling me I have to hurry. I listen to the robin's song saying not to worry. Then, I found myself alone, hoping that someone would miss me. Thinking about my home. But sometimes you have to moan when nothing seems to suit you. Never- theless you know you're looked to the future. Then I found my head one day when I wasn't even trying. Here I have to say, 'cause there is no use in lying, the answer lies within. 2 in-, we ,gr 3 ri' J Q XJ! , 5 iii AW? oi? As we leave we realize that, although we may never experience many of our high school friends and aspirations again, these days at Walnut Hills will always be with us in some way. The educational opportunities offered at Walnut have benefited all of us. lvlore than this, however, we have gained from the diversity of people to which all Walnut Hills students are exposed. One can not leave without having known a life different to one's own. Walnut Hills has improved our minds by making us more open to new ideas and more tolerant of change. Our days at Walnut can not be replacedg they will be remembered and cherished by all. A xy, .E-wx 1 G 5 iff ff 'LW Q 5543 R if K Q . xg' ' 4 sr W ... w I? sl 1 9 A il im I I 5 L wx 5, W K H 7 ,::. The controversial disqualification of the band at the annual U.C. music bowl is still being debated and left all with feelings of outrage, confusion, and possible injustice. The band did, however, place both at Fairborn and at Edgewood, with an impressive third at the latter. The band took part in U.C.'s Homecoming and the high point of the season was the performance at Riverfront stadium in the Bengals fvikings football game. Walnut Hills will miss its departing senior band members, but, the future looks bright for the 1982 Marching Band and all look forward to its first per- formance. The choral director, Ben Basone, using his vast experience in the musical field lead the cast vocally through the gruelling 2V2 months of rehearsal. The production and performances of A Fiddler on the Roof were definitely one of the finest at Walnut Hills, and will be remembered for a long time. Competing in the city, they won every event in which they participated and the league championship. Under Glueck's leader- ship the team has made great advances in the last year and will be awesome next year. LITERARY CLUB JUNIOR I-IONCDR SGCIETY GOOD NEWS f 1 ,, . f-9 I F 2 i x rf .- x 5 f y . EXCHANGE STUDENTS I really loved it at Walnut Hills and learned a lot about living in the United States. I thought it would be so terrible but it turned out to be great and it's so hard to leave all you guys. First of all I found out that people here are friendly and open iSome of them are alittle bit obnoxious, but forget about thosel and l'm thankful for all these people who helped me when I needed it. School in America has lots of activities, much more than school in Germany have! Man I can dig it! All these plays ithanks to Mrs. Welshl and activities. Ameri- cans are much more active in school, teachers and students. That is something I will take back and try to do in Cologne. Many thanks to everybody, teachers, officers, Mr. Shepherd, and friends and especially my family which I really loved! Julie Leenderise Cologne, West Germany QYFUJ gi I.. rtwtm s , Sylvana Torre - Montevideo, Uruguay iOpen Doori L -s My name is Marisa Antillo and I am an Exchange Student. I from Chile and I found here that the customs are differer The school, Walnut Hills is big, is not the same like my scho in Chile. Cincinnati is alittle city and very nice, I found Cincinnati tle because I live in the capital of Chile, Santiago, and its p ulation is three million inhabitants. I like the United States, 'specially Cincinnati, and I will lil to live here for all of my live but, I have to go to my school Chile . . . My trip to here is like the world which opens its doors show me the way that the people live - here or in differe places around the world. I will never forget the trip to here and my experiences tl' I've had here. Its something new that you won't forget. Marisa Antillo - Santiago, Chile iOpen Doori S Sandra Qunones Anna Mautner QYFUI STUDENT EXGHANGEAT WALNUT Walnut Hills is fortunate to have participants from several exchange groups in the school such as Youth for Understanding QYFUI, Open Door, and of course, American Field Service QAFSI. These students stay anywhere from 2-12 months with one family, occasionally travelling to interesting cities or tourist attractions or spending weekends with other host families. In the YFU and AFS year programs, the students are required to take classes and receive grades, as do regular students. In Open Door, the students must attend school, but are not responsible for any work and receive no academic credit. These programs are wonderful experiences for all concerned, for the hosts as well as the exchange students, exploring different cultures, and making the world a little smaller by customs shared and explained. The friendships made and the fun times will never be forgotten by those involved. Since the day I received my family's application, I was terri- fied of coming to such a big school. I had always gone to a pri- vate school that only had 600 students. That is a big differ- ence. Being a student in the school has taught me many things, from the meaning of pickles to the meaning of life and friendship. It has been hard to get used to all the different things, but it also has been exciting, even though it took me a little time to understand why people thought that in my coun- try people live in trees. Cincinnati is a neat city and it has many interesting places. I would like to thank my family, who have supported me, and all the teachers that had to put up with me, asking so many questions. Last, but not least I would like to thank all the students that have tried to help me and be my friends. It has been a wonderful experience, and I wouldn't change it for anything! Sandra Quinones - Santo Domingo IAFSJ I want to thank all of you at Walnut for a wonderful time you are giving me. lt has been full of happiness, sadness, fun, excitement, fear, interest, wonderful moments, and although I have times when I most of all would like to pack my suitcases and catch the next plane home, the overall experience is something too great to put in words. I want to give extra big thanks to my family, the Hoffmans, and especially one of my sisters, Martha, who also goes to Walnut. I wish that every- body could have the opportunity to experience what I am experiencing now. There are so many things you all could learn - and enjoy - if you showed a little bit more interest in other cultures. Many things here are a lot different from Sweden, and if you want to know what it is like over there you are welcome to come and visit me. The two teams met peacefully on a warm October day to take part in this vigorous competition that would determine which staff was Number 1 fOf course there was no doubt in our mindsj. An overwhelming crowd filled the bleachers for this big event. The REM staff came dressed to kill and definitely out- classed their opponents with their matching t-shirts. Coach Ferguson cheered for REM. Ms. Guentert tried to help her team in their futile effort. Even Mr. Shepherd got involved in a little 'dirty' work. ln the end, the Rem staff defeated their enemies with a thrilling 9-2 victory!!! PRINCIPAL - DAVID SHEPHERD ASSISTANT PFIINCIPALS 36 Raymond Finke Thomas Hunter Dennis Mathews Jack Kennevan Mr. Mathews and Mr. Kennevan, our two new administrators, adjusted very easily to Walnut Hills life. Coming from Aiken as a business teacher and from Porter as an assistant principal, Mr. Mathews came to be respected as a fair and efficient administrator. Likewise, Mr. Kennevan highly values education and proved to be outstanding in dealing with scheduling and AP's. Expressing his thoughts, Mr. Kennevan says, I wish to express my sincere thanks for introducing and sharing with me your rich inheritance - a living tradition, a rewarding experience that is uniquely Walnut Hills. By definition tradition is the handing down of information, beliefs and customs by word of mouth or by example from one generation to the next without instruction. Thus, tradition not only affects a healthy cultural continuity, but also affects a living inherit- ance for all those associated with Walnut Hills. This inheritance that is ours is far more than just a possession handed down from past generations. Our inheritance is both a life-giving and life sustaining that is given and received in count- less ways by the people who have in the past, or presently making and will continue to make Walnut Hills more than just a citadel of learning. Walnut Hills is a cosmopolis of great minds, exceptional talents and outstanding human beings. LIBRARIANS 8m COUNSELORS . Walnut Hills students were chosen to be in the spotlight of a motion picture made for t.v. called the Pride of Jessie Hallam. The whole school felt the presence of Hollywood as director chairs, movie cameras, lights, star trailers and security guards were noticed everywhere. For five days, the school tolerated hall detours, delays in classes and secu- rity guards ushering stray students anticipating a precious glimpse of a movie star. About a thousand students were recruited to participate in the track scene and the students responded with overwhelm- ing enthusiasm. Hope- fully, qWaInut can continue to provide learning opportunities for all qualified students regardless of physical handicap. gs it ln the spirit of Sursum ad Sumum, many Walnut Hills graduates have reached the apex of success. ln addition to some local personalities Walnut Hills alumni include many nationally known achievers. Locally, Willis Gradison 1Clockwisel11J has become a US Representative, Stan Arnoff has become a state Senator, Carl Rubin, 123 a federal judge, and Arn Bortz now serves on city council. Some nationally known figures include Tony Tra- bert 133, a Wimbledon Champion, Theda Bara, a famous silent movie actress, James Levine, conduc- tor of the N.Y. Met, and Jerry Rubin, 14l a former Yip- pie leader and now a Wall Street business executive. Barry Bishop, 15i a member of the first exhibition to climb and reach the top of Mt. Everest, is also a mem- ber of WH alumni. Others include, Doug Cramer, 161 producer of The Brady Bunch, The Odd Couple, The Love Boat, and many other successful shows. Miller Huggins, the first NY Yankee manager to win the World Series, was also a graduate of WH, as was Eliz- abeth Drew 17l a successful journalist, and Edward Youkilis18J, an internationally known artist. We are sure that we have overlooked so many other noted graduates and have overlooked those successful doctors, lawyers, bankers, scientists, and authors. Sursum ad Summum - higher and higher - hopefully, we will all achieve our greatest capability and find contentment in whatever we do. 5. Take your place kiddies, it's time to play musical administrators . . . This year we saw many changes in Walnut Hills' administration. Of course Mr. Shepherd remained our ever loving chief principal but the assistant principals changed faster than their secretaries could type their names. After our relatively new administrator fof one yearl Mr. Hunter replaced Mr. McCracken who was promoted to SCPA, Mr. Finke was moved to Mr. Hunter's old office. Mr. Kennevin, who was formerly at SCPA took over Mr. Finke's old job and all was well. But before you let this fully sink in, read on . . . Mr. 'Allender was promoted to a Board of Education job downtown, so Mr. Kennevin took Mr. Allender's job at Walnut - which is working with computers among other things - then Mr. Mathews entered the Walnut Hills scene to take over Mr. Kennevin's old job which was originally Mr. Finke's which was originally Mr. Heinlein's - but that was too long ago for most of you to remember. With all of these floating administrators why not bring back the floating B pattern? ibut that was too long ago for most of you to remember toolll. ., Wi Mr. McCracken, who was switched to Assistant principal at SCPA, claims he is now going through his second fatherhood. After Walnut Hills students to look after for 12 years, he now has to deal with fourth grade on . . . imagine that! Still, he is always available with his door open to all those who need him. He said, Walnut Hills made me an old man but he still misses the students and staff alike. As SCPA will soon see, Mr. McCracken is about as silly as an administrator can be. 154 Since becoming associate Director of Administrative Services for the Cincin- nati Public School system, Mr. Allendar is responsible for generally .the same programs he worked with and mastered at Walnut Hills. Organizing the schools' curriculum, allocations of teachers, grades for all secondary schools, and instruction are his main jobs, while his new major responsibility is involved with accrediting all of the schools. When going through his files and folders, bringing thirteen years of memories to an end, he felt it sickening leaving his second family . Mr. Allendar's advice to all of us is, Take advantage of all of the opportuni- ties available. Dig when opportunities knock, and don't do something just because it's prestigious or easy. 155 This form was sent to all parents ot Walnut Hills students in June, 1980: DRUG 8x ALCOHOL ABUSE: SUGGESTED PAFIENTAL GUIDELINES Realizing that drug and alcohol abuse by youth can be greatly diminished through community awareness and intensified parental supervision, we are urging parents of our community to follow these guidelines as closely as possible. We recognize that each child and each family situation may alter circumstances. Parents, therefore, should use discretion in adjusting these guidelines for their own children. 1. Recognize that children in our community, as throughout the nation, are using drugs. 2. Make a clear and firm stand against any drug or alcohol abuse by your child. 3. Typical signs, such as increased irritability, falling grades, skipping school, bad memory, lying, listlessness, secretiveness about money, friends, and activities may suggest substance abuse. 4. Parents are responsible for actively supervising their child's behavior and if circumstances warrant, searching for physical signs might be warranted. 5. Know what popularly used drugs look and smell like and what paraphernalia is used in connection with drugs. 6. Parents must be willing to directly and honestly confront their child it they suspect drug or alcohol abuse. 7. Recognize that you are a parent, and not your child's peer. Be willing to enforce your rules and discipline with love. Be concerned about what drug and alcohol usage can do to your child and love him or her enough to separate them from any harmvul association with drugs and alcohol. 8. Know where your child is at all times. Your child should know where you can be reached at all times. 9. Re-evaluate your use of drugs and alcohol so as not to present a bad example. 10. Parents, when you are not at home, it is a helpful idea to have a neighbor aware of your absence. 11. Even teenagers should have a figure of authority in the home when parents are away from home for a week-end trip or more extensive vacation. An unsupervised home leaves them susceptible to impulse behavior in response to suggestions from friends. 12. Parents should always have a specific time for the child to return home. Circumstances and the specific lpre-determinedl activity may determine the appropriate timing but suggestions are for no later than 11:00 p.m. on weekends for older ele- mentary school children: 11:30 p.m. or 12:00 for early high school: 12:00 or 12:30 for older high school. Parents should be awake or expect to be awakened when their children come home. 13. Children should not be Camping Out in back yards and the woods unless supervised by a parent. 14. Children of any age should not be spending the night with friends unless contact is made with the other parent to be cer- tain parents will be at home and that their stand on behavior and drug usage is compatible with your own. Your child should not spend the night away unless that parental contact has been made. 15. Be aware of media influence on your child and the open praise given drug usage in the lyrics of some popular rock music, TV programs and movies. Parents should be extremely selective in permitting their older children to attend rock concerts or other large public events. 16. Students wearing clothing, belt buckles, jewelry, or other apparel which promotes the drug culture may suggest more than faddish dress. 17. Your child is susceptible to doing what the crowd does. lf your child has questionable friends, curtail his activities with that group. All callers to the home should identify themselves, or they should not be permitted to talk to your child. 18. When allowing your child to host a party, insist on a non-alcohol, no-drug policy and strictly enforce it. Anyone already under the influence of alcohol coming to the party should not be admitted. Recruit other parents to chaperone if necessary and keep the party small enough to handle. If your child balks at these restrictions, then, no party. llf a crowd builds up outdoors, disperse the crowd, with police assistance if necessary.l Your neighbors shouldn't have to suffer from the noise and litter. End the party by midnight for older teens, earlier for younger ones. If your child wishes to attend a party, call the parents to see if all of the above restrictions are in effect. Attendance at open parties should be discouraged. 19. Whenever you suspect a trail party going on, call the proper law enforcement to break it up. The parties are in secluded areas to escape adult supervision. Know where your child is! 20. Be aware of drug contacts, which are made easier with children who are loitering around malls or other public places. 21. Plan more family-oriented activities to include your children and their friends. Parents should feel that they can effectively deal with drug or alcohol problems in their family. There is community support for eliminating this problem and many resources are available to help. Parents are encouraged to seek help if necessary from school counselors, clergy, police, or other parents. We can make a difference! The Rebuttal Suggested Parent Guidelines fcompiled by concerned students of Walnutl: Realize that children in our community, as through the nation, are improving their minds. Make a clear and firm stand against any studying andfor intellectual pursuits in which your child may partake. Typical signs, such as Summa Cum Laude pins, honor roll certificates, frequent trips to the library, and membership in elite school clubs, may suggest that you should observe your child carefully. Parents are responsible for actively restricting their child's study habits and searching for physical signs of intellectual awareness may be warranted. Know what books are advanced for your child's grade and what paraphenalia is used in connection with studying, ie., slide rules, calculators, and the complete works of Shakespeare. Parents must be willing to directly and honestly confront their child if they suspect involvement in the above mentioned activities. Recognize that you are a parent and it is your duty to stunt the growth of your childs mind. Know where your child is at all times, making sure that it is not at the local library. To set a good example watch TV shows such as I Love Lucy, Mayberry RFD, Greenacres and The Price Is Right while reading the National Enquirer. When you are not at home make sure that the liquor cabinet is easily accesible to your child to promote relaxation. Teenagers should be discouraged from assuming positions of responsibility in the household. Parents should encourage late night weekends and should not allow their child in the house earlier than 2 am on weeknights. Parents should condone backyard campouts to promote the study of various herbs, mushrooms, and weeds, to encourage the experience of 'wildlife'. To ensure proper behavior, parents should encourage their child to entertain guests at decadent overnight toga parties. Be wary of the National Foundation of the Arts. Parents should be selective in allowing their child to attend art exhibits, lectures, and poetry readings. Students who wear calculators on their belts, carry large stacks of books, and walk around in a daze quoting William Wordsworth may suggest more than the current trend. If your child is independent and responsible encourage peer pressure. If your child has no friends suggest that he hang around county parks after dark. When allowing your child to host a party - insist on a no-koolaid and no-pretzel policy. What in the S 8Jl S is a trail party? - Be aware of math tutors when your child asks to stay after school. Include your children in vice-oriented activities. rf' QL. to RJ Ronny Essig ftreasureri, Lisa Hagenauer lsecretaryi, David Kelly iv-presidentj, Jim Schwartz fpresi dentj. if if gwawafw M41 wal 5? 5, i, i i Q W ig' U J M ,X .
