Walnut Hillians have a style all their own, yet are mirror images of each other, not only in dress, but in actions, manner, and attitudes as well. , Ijglrw'r. w 3 Reflections on. . . . . . each other Reflections on . w-Jm-qh-br-ronw-I4J5 ..;. g. .r .4. The answer lies in the inner drive and perseverance each student possesses. This combination leads to the conflict of individual dreams and is portrayed by the fierce competition in our classrooms. Above: You look me out just because my socks fell down? 82 Football FOOTBALL has tough season As head coach, this was a very frustrating and disap- pointing season. After a very fine pre-sea- son, with the help of Coach Allen, we expected a win- ning season. Our CO-Ordinating staff of six was not completed until after school started and we had played two games. This caused our skill develop- ment to be behind schedule. After three scrimmages, I was still optimistic, but the injury jinx struck. We lost our starting Tight End, Cen- ter Back, Center, Left Back, and Tackle. As morale decayed, a rife intensified that existed in my senior leadership. I had to disci- pline several other starters and move up reserve players. This, of course, weakened our Chances of winning; but I feeI it helped correct some attitudes toward responsibii- ity and commitment. I feel the coaching staff, parents, and administration did a wonderful job of sup porting the football deci- sions this year, and I want to thank them. I hope more boys will come out this August, and more fans in September; these guys deserve a lot more credit than they ever get. Coach W. Fourteen lovely charming intelligent young ladies with great tennis potential - what could be bad? Our record was not the greatest in Walnut Hills history, but we played some very tough competition. In the Sectional Tournament, Chris Gaddis and Sally Shepherd placed first in doubles with Jane Ratliff and Nancy Kessel taking second. Both teams advanced to the second round before losing. If Jane Meisel hadn't injured her leg, I feel strongly that one team would have made it to the State Tournament. Special recognition goes to Jane Ratliff, who was this year's MVP and Sheila Smitson and Sally Shepherd as most improved players. With only three returning Varsity runners, the four other spots had to be filled by last year's reserve run- ners or by new recruits. Fortu- nately the turnout of new run- ners was very strong. These runners, after a summer of individual training, came together and, led by CoeCape tains Torn Heginbotham and Todd Walters, soon developed into a very competitive team. Coach Wehrle Soccer 95 96 Soccer Reserves acquire new coach The reserve soccer team showed much improvement dur- ing the course of the year. We had many good times as well as some very low times. But I think the general outcome of the sea- son was very good. We ended the season with a 5-5-0 record, but with a new coach and philos- ophy. I think that's pretty good. We were very experienced at playing the game, although our basic skill level was below aver- age. I think this is where our real growth and learning experience was most noticeable. There was also a vast improvement in our tactical knowledge of the game, and as the season wore on, we were able to execute the basics of play. There were really no outstand- ing individual performances by anyone on the team, but certain individuals did develop into fine team players as the season went on. All in all, most of our team needs another year of building, especially in the fundamentals, but I was happy with the prog- ress and I know they will make a great contribution to the Walnut Hills soccer tradition. Well last year's team was just that and this year's team is the best in the last ten years. in all my years as a player and a coach, I have never been involved with a team that was as much fun or worked as hard as this one. The seniors have shown tremendous leadership and the juniors have improved with each day. At this time we are 8-5 and tied for second place in the best league in the Cincinnati area. Our goals as a team are to finish second in the league, behind the possible number one team in the state, Withrow, and to make a strong showing in the state tour- nament. Much of our success this year was due to the addition of George Jackson to the coaching staff. He has done an outstanding job. Coach Allen and Coach Jacki son have also done a fine job with the Reserve and Jr. High programs; the future of Walnut Hills Basketball looks good. I would like to wish the seniors the best of luck! Inconsistency proved to be a decisive factor for the team. At times they played with poise and skill, and at other times, a bit lower than their capabilities. But some individual performances did highlight the season. Kyle Roach, the only returning Senior, supplied the team with quick ness and good defensive play. Junior, Lynn Heimkreiter, Karen Carter, and Vera Hall, did a good job of crashing the board and driving to the basket for inside points. Up top at the guard posi- tions, could be seen such indivduals as Juniors, Sherri Hil- derbrand, Beth Rundle, and Cindy Johnson, and Sophomores, Beth Robison, and Allison Rob- erts. All of these players supplied a good Offensive pinch, as well as some fine defense. Although lack of experience and injuries some- what hindered the Eagles, next year looks to be very promosing. The talented Seniors will be missed, but with practice, experience, and physical growth, these underclassmen could be our future stars. Our overall record was 6-3. We were hampered this season with a lot of water time losses due to heating problems, but we did make up for it when we were able. CLASS OF 1979 My first contact with the class of '79 came four years ago, during my first year at Wal- nut Hills. This encounter left me feeling that the members of the Class of '79, as ninth graders, were all immature, undisciplined, uncaring, and generally obnoxious brats. The Class members did everything from yelling in the halls t0 swinging on pipes to writing on walls in their attempts to draw attention to themselves. Over the past years I have watched the class move through the apathetic do nothing stage of their Sophomore year; to a group capable of producing a highly successful and well organized P-Nuts '77; to a group able to coordinate prom and after prom and make money from them! The Class of '79 might never go down in the Chronicles of Walnut Hills High School as being the greatest in any one thing, but the class of '79 will surely be remembered because of their well-roundedness. In my years of working with the class of '79 l have been able to watch them grow and mature. l have had the opportunity to get to know many as individuals, some as firends. I hope that all are able to leave WH glad to have been a member of the class of '79. I know that my contact with them has made me a better person. I will never regret having said Yes to the class. But beyond the development of Class organization, there has been something else that has developed the class of 81, class spirit. The transition from inno- cent freshman t0 the real high schooi scene along with the completion of successful Class projects qualifies us as battle worn veterans of the dome . We have definitely become another link in a chain of pro- ductive Walnut Hills classes. The completion of several class pro- jects this year has certainly led to a more unified class. The hours spent raising money for Fresh were as fun as the dance itself. Organizing the candy and bake sales was an experience. We realize they were only the beginning of many sales to come as Walnut Hills SENIOR HIGH students.
