The Stu dent Assembly Ur. Highi and Student Sen- ate tSr. Higm are the two houses which form the Congress. The major issue that Congress was con- cerned with was the school tax levy. After its failure, a committee was formed to investigate the possibility of continuing the education of the students during the days that the public schoois will be Closed. ya; SENATE: A. McClure o HELEN HOWE ,HERE'S s HELEN HOWE Candidate, Cincinnati Board of Education HI believe that the Cincinnati Board of Education needs a new and positive image. As a veteran educator who attended the Cincinnati public schools and whose children were all educated here, I believe that I know how to create not only an image of credibility but also a true foundation of good human relations which will restore the proud status which the Cincinnati schools oncerhad in Ohio, in our metropolitan area, and most importantly of all, in the minds of our citizens. HThucydides ascribes to Pericles these words in his great Funeral Oration at the beginning of the Pelopenneslan Wars, 'We alone of all the Greeks hold that a man who has no interest in politics is not a harmless person, but a useless person! I challenge all of you. Don't be useless citizens a get involved! The personal satisfaction is reward enough. HThe reason I am running is to allow the Board the chance to take a first step toward breaking out of the political trap in which it now struggles. A Board of Education without an educator makes about as much sense as an AMA tAmerican Medical Associatiom without a doctor or a Bar Association without a lawyer. HEREiS HOWE a years of classroom experience; - honors, program teacher; a children attended Cincinnati public schools; - former PTA officer; a Faculty Action Committee, Walnut Hills: - Faculty Representative, Walnut Hills Parents' Board; - Phi Beta Kappa graduate, University of Cincinnati; a attended North Fairmount School and Hughes High School. ttlt was a great experience. I am deeply appreciative of the tremendous contrib- ution of the hundreds of people who worked on my campaign with: the letter writ- ing, envelope stuffing, stamp licking, telephoning, literature distributing, poll watching. The list goes on and on. 23 HPMQUCQO 'dI-I-IIT'CIJHC'Df-l-CJJC'DL-1 The Leadership Council is composed of the Walnut Hills Class Officers, Student Con- gress Heads, Chatterbox Edi- tors, and of course our favor- ite mascot, Mr. Shepherd. These individuais represent the WHHS student body and meet once every three weeks at literally sunrise. What dedi- cation! They discuss a num- ber of topics concerning the welfare of the school and its pupils. Among the topics which have been debated are: continuing education when the schools close down next year, playing music in the student Iunchroom during E pattern, and perhaps bringv ing back to Walnut the Green Zap to encourage picking up litter and Iitterers around the schooL A Bottom Row: tL-FD M. The Leaders of Sigma Delta Pi The Sigma Delta Pi organization grew out of the willingness of a group of tenth graders to provide service to Walnut Hills High School. The idea was originated by Everett Howard who worked with Mr. Pate in arriving at the purpose and structure of the organiza- tion. The purpose of Sigma Delta Pi is to pro- vide the following educational experiences for its members: to develop leadership qualities and skills in working with groups, to promote high academic achievement, to provide a forum for intercultural understanding, to encourage the development of individual tal- ent, and to provide service to Walnut Hills High School and its surrounding communi- ties. In reaching these objectives, the organi- zation incorporates service, educational, cul- tural, 1fund-raising, social, athletic, and mem- bership projects. Membership in Sigma Delta Pi is restricted to Senior High students. 27 njuagvzzs F t - rgf F5 JFWq .4a.4 I Bottom RIJw: R. de EruirI, T.. Steinmetz; A Rowe P. Everaen, D. NoIan L. Frankel. Victims of the above were captain, Matt Hammonds, Joel Borden, Chris Kraus, and alternates David Lev- ine and Frank Chaiken. Leading the team was the faculty advisor, Ms. Judith Bluestein. Two hotly contested tryouts, one on the last day of school in June, the other on the first day of school in September, produced the five quick-handed representa- tives of one of the area's finest schools. Armed with a tradition of champions, the members prac- ticed diligently until the fated afternoon in October. Matt, expert in Christian dogma, Joel, knowledgeable in the mechanics of an alarm-clock, and Chris, possessor of Its Academic blood, were thought to be the very combination needed to bring home another trophy. In addition, Davidis experience with computers, and Frankts prowess in fourth declension neuter words made the team appear unstoppable. But when the true test came, Walnut Hills at last realized the difficulty in attaining a championship. To win, one had to know a little bit of everything and a lot of nothing. This year's team did not fall into the mold. National Merit Semi-Finalists National Merit: J. Borden, T. Brunsman, F. Chaiken, E. Cohen, C. Coughlin, J. Diamond, M. Hammonds, C. Hattemer, M. None of us will ever forget Sheri B., with her bandaids under her brand new seelthrough leotard! Or what aboui Stepha- nie, who never made a cue on time we all knew we'd find her in a dark cornerl. Also, Chris R, came out of his shell one day back stage, while Barb was making a quick change lhe's such a deviln I Well excuuuuuuse me. Pony. Einstein Jr. Penny Foreman Chorus. Chorus. Some of the funniest incidents were those with the horses. When trying on their costumes, they acted like typical girls, arguing about whose body was better actually they all won the booby prize; It still seems amazing that Sally turned each one of them into a twinkleetoes. During P-Nuts, there was even a bit of added humor in the performances. Danny Fl got a standing ovation for his hairy arm one night. Actually, P-Nuts memories cannot be covered with only the humorous aspect. We had many touching and sentimental moments. The last night of the show proved how much everyone cared and how close we all had become. The Jazz Greats of the Future! 73 This year's Homecoming Week was a success! Taking place from Monday, Dec 12 to Friday, Dec. 16, the Walnut Hills spirit filled the school. The halls were decorated for the festivities and for the upcoming Christmas holiday. Students were encouraged totdress in any bizarre attire of their liking during the five days. On Tuesday, Dec. 13, the nominees for Homecoming King and Queen were announced. They were as foilows: King Nominees -- Andy Osterbrock, James Ran- kin, Chris Reaney, and Andy Wiseman; Queen Nominees e Angele Green, Keena McDowell, Jenny Rudy, and Kim Sha- doan. On Friday, Dec. 16, the excitement was building up for both the game and dance which would be held that evening. Pep rallies were held in the afternoon r- complete with the Pep Band, the Cheerleaders, the Drill Team, and the Cheer- ing crowd talso happy to get out of F and G Pattern classes; Nomulgeg x- a'a lionecpume? tame -w The game was not in the Eagles' favor. Yes e the Taft Senators slightly wounded the Eagles' winning streak. But . . . the Homecoming Dance held at the Disabled Veter- ans' Hall quickly cured any scars that the players had received. The D.J. kept the music rolling and the crowd on its feet. Finally, the moment everyone was waiting for arrived e the crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen. Kim and James certainly felt content as the imperial crowns were ptaced on their heads. The other nominees were their jeweled paper crowns, too! We have seen this morale factor hinder the team effort although we have had some fine individual efforts. We haven't been embarrassed in any contest this year, but have lost by such narrow margins as 6-0, 12-8, 15-8, and had two ties, 14-14, 14-14; and won 7-6. We still have West Hi and Elder to play and our personnel is very thin. I have my fingers crossed. Let me add that Walter Allen and Chuck Hoggard and my assist- ants have done a fine job in spite of the adverse conditions. But, I can honestly say that this is the finest team I have ever coached, both in talent and personal- 0 ity. Led by seniors Andy Porter and Jeff Zinn, this Year's team has the potential of winning the state champi- onship. The only problem that I tore- y see is that three of the top teams are right here in Cincinnati. l feei that, aside from Upper Arlington, we have a S team that is second to none in Ohio. I'm not saying this just to boost the guys' morale, but this is the way I really feel. During this time, we have all experienced many ups and downs. The help of these people has made the bad times less disappointing, and the good times more rewarding. There are two people in particular to whom we onId like to express our gratitude. First, our class advisor, Ms. Karen Trenne- pohl, whose continuous help and devotion has made many class events something special. And of course, much thanks goes to Mr. Milton McCracken, who has not only been our Assistant Principal, but our close friend. We cannot begin to acknowledge everyone, but we appreciate all those parents, faculty, and staff whose support and personal friendships have made Walnut Hills an unforgettable part of our lives. Your assistance, encouragement, and everlasting faith have made our days on 'lThe Hill, something we will always rememb er.
