To understand history, a scholar must study not only the ancient past, but also the happenings of today, which will be history tomorrow. Similarly, the man who wishes to remain in contact with the reality of today must understand yesterday and anticipate tomorrow. In an attempt to study liyesterdayf the school year 1967-1968, REMEMBRANCER has assumed a theme of todawaarshall McLuhanls idea of extension. For today is an extension of yesterday, and tomorrow is a continuation of to- day. REMEMBRANCER 1968 is, therefore, as Mc- Luhan would describe it, a look around to see whatls happening. the student, an extension of life IOSI ' exploration, an extension of cur IO M u u. m a I3 athletics, an extension of the spirit I5 16 performing, an extension of communication 18 I9 7.0 emotions, an extension of the heart L. 7'3 24 2.6 7'9 the future, an extension of the present. 30 Faculty . $$$$$me unmaai. 4. .mxdmxtyi ?..gkwquu 93141.wa 1: 96135;? .ocgu. 9U $1.1.H rm $1.27 .2. .v .. . Brokamp ! .r Mr. Louis Heilmann 35 Miss Violet Balastra The school year 19674968 was at times a struggle for the students, teachers, and administrators at Walnut Hills High School. The problems in scheduling the new seven-period day, the controversies over the dress code, and the teacher strike threatened the unity which had once been so evident among the tvventy-six hundred pupils and teachers who are Walnut Hills. The.role of a principal in such trying times is to attempt to reestab- lish unity and to retain it. Mr. Raymond J Brokamp, formerly assistant principal at Walnut Hills, did just that, and with the help of Mr. Louis Heilmann and Miss Violet Balastra, Walnut Hills remained an entity. The mutual leadership experienced in the studelit-teacher- administrator relationship was very ably led by these three principals. y MRS. FRE-HSE MR. BANK Counselors w :e h. Rh 3' MR. The Eagles opened the season with a great 26-12 victory over Lemon-Monroe and Closed with an equally stunning 32-8 defeat over Taft. In between, triumphant victories and discouraging set- backs carried the Eagles to a .500 record A crowd of enthusiastic spectators followed the Eagles to Dayton Fairhoum where they played great ball against this state- ranked team, only to lose by one touchdown in the last forty-five seconds. The following week, the crowd re turned to watch their mighty team suppress the Withrow Tigers for the second season in a row. So the season went, exciting victories coupled with stinging losses. Cary Blakeyk prowess as a quarterback, combined with Harold Iefferies, fantastic running ability, was one of the Eagles? outstanding assets this year. Senior run- ning backs like Mike Oldham and Edd Duemler also sparked the Eagles' offensive, while Greg Harris led the able defensive squad at every game. Back Row: H. Glaspie, M. McWilliams, R. Varsity Basketball This year's basketball record of 3-15 did not truly reveal the abilities of the individual players. Their failure to unite under Coach Lunsford's guidance, and also their difficulty in working as a team were the causes of their losses. But individually, the players were exceptionally capable. Captain Mike Oldham was Without a doubt the teanfs most outstanding player. Oldham led the city's scorers in the seasonk beginning with a 25.4 point average. Un- fortunately, his point average fell off, dropping him to sixth position. His 31 points scored against both Hamil- ton GarHeId and Courter were his seasones best scores. Senior Harold Jefferies sparked the team with his ex- ceptional shooting ability. Leg injuries plagued seniors Ken Revelson and Pat Ecker and limited their playing abilities. The juniors and sophomores 0n the team showed great potential for a winning season in 1969. Mike Oldham leaps high to put one in. j e Back Row: R. Scharf, P. Ecker, H. Glaspie, K Smith, M. Oldham, T. Varsity Cheerleaders 80 Activities 81 Praident, Darryl Conliffe v r , A ' , ' Student Council The school year 1967-1968 was a turbulent one for Senior Student Council and for its president, Darryl Con- liffe. Vehement disagreements. over the schoolts required dress code and the timeless discussion of the question, ttWhat has happened to school spirit? often provided Council with frustrating arguments. Councilts committees excelled, especially the American Field Service, which raised over one-half of its needed money on nDollar Daft so that it could concentrate on making the exchange studentst stay at Walnut Hills 21 more enjoyable experi- ence. Money and Within-the-school problem solving were not the only accomplishments of this yeafs Council, how- ever. In late winter and early spring the Evaluation Committee led a series of open discussions about race relations at Walnut Hills. Student Council thus became more than an opportunity for high school students to practice government: it became an influence in the real- ity of their daily lives. Representatives-Back Row: M. Za- Fall Play A new period in drama at Walnut Hills was initiated this fall with the Drama Clubhs excellent production of George Bernard Shawk Pygmalion. Many first? were achieved: the production was the newly-formed clubhs first performance, it marked the first Walnut Hills pro- duction for the director, Miss Karen Kramer, and it marked the acting dt'ebuts of Patty Titchener and Peter Lichstein, who perfon'ned laudably in the roles of Eliza Doolittle and Henry Higgins, Effective also in this per- formance was the scenery, which provided a realistic background for Shaw's modem dramatization of an ancient myth. Pygmalion was the first in what promises to be a vigorous new theatrical program at Walnut Hills. 106 rider, D. Rosen, S. Trautenberg, B. Lindner, E. Sawits, J. Fener, M. Russo, L. Wagner, D. At Walnut Hills. such an act is Peae nutsl Under the direction of Carol Pleatnmn and Rav Wellbaum, WI'he Most Unforgettable Peanuts Everll changed the junior class into The Junior Class. The method was simple: a great deal of work by a huge number of dedicated people. It was a space-uge parody of The Wizard of Oz, a tale of Dorothy, her smce dog Ralph, and the various eccentric characters they met during their search for the wizard. It was a combination of the singing, dancing, and acting talents of many, Some, such as Gordon Jenkinsl singing and Anne Brown,s dancing, stood out and thus made the memories of this yeafs Peanuts that much better. But the quality of any such show is only incidental to its creators. Any junior will tell you that this yeufs Peanuts was the most unforgettable ever, and therein lies its true significance. This is the common spirit, that substance with which a class is born. 110 m 111 O I . 3...... . 5 .lll. ruggko. .1 An... hr... 1-. lull. v , .5133. migraig v.3 , .4 .I. all.- 4 ... .u .W. A 33;? It is u nevervending progression was different students continuously file through the same process of growth. There is a basic similarity-fhat of traditions-tying together all such groups. The class rally, the class play, the Christmas assembly and homecoming, the honors assembly, the prom, and commencement, all hold a special place in every senior class, Nevertheless, this year's senior class utilized its own methods to promote class spirit and 160 unity. The toothbrush sale, the 'lSpirit 0f 68l, pins, and the breakfast after Prom were all directed toward this one purpose. They may never become traditions for every senior class, but they have been devised by this group of leaders and have made it unique. Commencement will soon be over, and a new set of faces will again be established as leaders. The old will become an extension of the school and of its people, an extension which will bring further dignity to that insti- tution from which it springs.
