PHILIP MCIJ EVITT The principals at Walnut Hills are much more than the unseen voices over the public address system in the morn- ing, the disciplinarians who keep the wayward in line, and the often maligned oiiicials who must bring each assembly to its end. Making the important decisions on all school matters and maintaining the high reputation of Walnut Hills are the tasks of the principals. Mr. Philip McDevitt, completing his seventh year as the schoolts leader, oversees the activities of the two thousand five hundred students and teachers who make up Walnut Hills. Working with him are Mr. Louis Heilmann, assistant principal in charge of discipline, curriculum, and pupil ac- counting, and Miss Violet Balastra, whose responsibilities include budget, textbooks, and assemblies. PrlnCIPals MISS BALASTTLA 35 MISS EZELL MRS. FREHSE MR. RIDENOUR Counselors The counselors perform several important functions for the students of Walnut Hills. They are always available for discussion of each studenths personal problems. Miss Ezell, Mrs. Thrush, and Mr. Ridenour, junior high counselors, are mainly concerned with the adjustment of the seventh grader to his new environment and the planning of a Course of studies for the four high school years. Mrs. Frehse and Mr. Banks, senior high counselors, are primarily concerned with the lengthly process of college selection and admission. Other common concerns include the problems of summer employment and military service. MR. BANKS MRS. THRUSH 37 English The study of English is basically the study of communi- gation, a study that has several aspects. Through constant practice in writing and repeated exercises in grammar, the English student learns to better express himself both in oral and in written work.. English also develops his ability to understand the ideas of others, a skill essential in all areas of study. In reading poems, short stories, novels, and dramas, the student is exposed to new and deeper concepts on vital topics. Good literature provokes him to a serious reevaluation of himself and of his world, resulting in a more complete understanding of both. MISS HUTCHISON 'a'r MR. WIT'TSTEIN MRS. RATERMAN 40 Latin By requiring each student to take at least three years of Latin, Walnut Hills retains its classical tradition. Latin, of course, has much to offer the student. In itself, the language possesses an orderly grammatical structure and countless works of ageless literature, written two thousand years ago but still of great value today. A knowledge of Latin also allows the student to build his English vocabulary and to appreciate the numerous classical references made in the literature of all languages uh Vudli'ym LuLx-t fail H z. 2-. Missing: Mr. Flahive, Mr. Hill, Mr, Rankin, Mr. Raterman, Mr. Wilson, Mrs. Fischbach. MRS. OtNEILL Modern Languages The study of a modern language opens an entire culture to the student, broadening his perspectives to include a whole way of life otherwise ignored. Whether it be French, Spanish, or German that the student chooses to study, the benefits are many. To be able to understand someone speak- ing a foreign tongue is certainly a joy in itself. The ability to read in another language makes available great works of literature, eliminating the need for a translator who too often Colors and corrupts the original. Language clubs, actively fostered by their respective faculty advisers, pro- vide opportunities for the student to use his skill without the pressure of the Classroom. MRS. History History is indeed little more than the register of the crimes, follies, and misfortunes of mankind, said Gibbon. Why then does one study history? Perhaps the best answer to this question is that by studying the past, one can better understand the present and prepare for the future, hopefully avoiding the errors of other generations. After taking junior high social studies, courses in rudi- mentary geography, civics, and American history, the interested history student may choose to study ancient and medieval or modern history. Junior-year American histoxy is next, usually followed by socio-economics, the new Sino- Soviet totalitarianism, or collage European history. MRS. CLARKE 45 4; w. :- ALLJ; m5. '1 . LEEDS 4.6 Mathematics In a. world where answers are seldom exact, the study of mathematics is a welcome relief to the curious and doubting mind. After accepting a small number of postu- lates and definitions, the student sees an orderly system developed before him. Such a course of study requires precise thinking and mental discipline and is therefore of unquestioned value even for those who may never use their math after graduation. At Walnut Hills, the mathematics Curriculum has been undergoing constant changeh For example, the traditional freshman algebra course is now given to many students in the eighth grade, hopefully better preparing them for more difhcult courses to come. A MR DUVALL MISS BRUEGGEMANN 48 Science The launching of Sputnik, the hrst man-made satellite, in 1957 awoke American educators to the importance of science. Since then, the science curriculum in secondary schools, Walnut Hills included, has expanded to meet the demands of an increasingly scientiflcally-oriented world. Courses cover both the physical and biological sciences, with at least one course required in each division in addi- tion to eighth grade general science. Recently, the curricu- lum has added college-level programs in physics, chemistry, and biology. Whether the student enters a scientific career or not, at least he will possess a better perspective of the world in which he lives. MR. ANKENMAN MR. WOODWARD MRS. STANLEY 4-9 MR. HENNEBERG Mr. Henneberg, Mrs. Dobbins, Mrs. 50 Art The artist does not see things as they are, but as he isfl obsewed Alfred Tonnelle. Art, then, is a highly potential means of self-expression, one that requires a talent for transferring onels ideas onto the canvas. Few students have this talent, but, in the seventh grade course required of all students, the art faculty has the opportunity to discover those who have, and, in the later grades, to develop that skill. In any case, the student will be better able to appre- ciate the works of others and the beauty that surrounds him because of his exposure to art. Teaching the Deaf Eight deaf students, all of junior high age, came to Walnut Hills this year in an experimental pro- gram to see if handicapped students could live happily in the environment of a large high school. ZOOB As the student progresses through his high school years, . the library becomes increasingly important. In its stacks, lerar he finds the answers to questions in a multitude of subjects. y In the serenity of the library he finds the quiet needed for worthwhile study. Miss Boland and Mrs. Wood are con- stantly available to dimct the student in his quest for knowledge. MISS BOLAND, MRS. WOOD 51 Music If numbers are any indication, then music is the most popular of the non-academic subjects offered at Walnut Hills. The incoming seventh grader can choose between instrumental and choral music, starting potentially fruit- ful careers that often conclude in the blue and gold of the Eagle marching band or in the darkness of the choirhs traditional Christmas assembly. Mr. Hammons and Mr, Gentil seek to develop the voices of the student, while facility with musical instru- ments is the goal of Mr. Steiden and Mr. Thompson. What does it take to succeed in music? Some talent is needed but a much greater quantity of dedication and desire are far more important in the making of a skilled musician or vocalist. MR. HAMMONS 'v'EVVWIii-mmlmmrei '3; Mr. Hemmons. An Eagle sweep comes to an end after a short gain, The kickeoff team gets pre-game instructions 59 Led by Willard Stargel, in his first year as head coach, the Eagle football team played an aggressive brand of ball, falling just short of a .500 record. Despite disastrous losses in both the hrst and last games of the season, the Eagles finished tied for third place in the Public High School League. The season opened with a 48-0 setback from Woodward, the eventual league Champions, and another defeat at the hands of LaSalle, a non-league foe. Miami Trace became the Eagles, hrst victim as two touchdowns by senior end Clyde Solomon led to victory. After a defeat by Taft, the Eagles thrilled the largest crowd of the season with a con- vincing win over archrival Withrow. The running of all- league quarterback Demonte Johnson, the pass receiving of Harold Jefferies and Mike Oldham, and a stubborn Eagle defense were particularly outstanding Two straight losses ensued before the Walnut offense once again began to click, running up high scores in victories over Western Hills and Courter Tech. The season Closed with the trip to Piqua where the Eagles were crushed by a much stronger team. Nevertheless, this season must be considered a marked change for the better in the football fortunes of the school and a credit to the coach. With only minimal losses to graduation, next yearhs squad should be even better. 4; The scrappy Eagle defense closes in on a Hughes ball-carrier. Coach Willard Stargel discusses his offense with quarterback DeMonte Jehnson. Shoeless kicker Steve Meyer booms out a long punt as an attempt to block the kick fails. 6o - ' u a Halfback Mike Oldham looks for running room before takmg a Johnson pitchout. The 1966-67 edition of the Eagle basketball squad was a. much better team than its 5-14 season record might indi- cate. In one span, four league games were lost by a total of eight points. Had these been victories instead, the sea- son would have been an unquestioned success. There were plenty of bright spots in the Eagle basketball picture this year. One was the emergence of junior center Mike Oldham as the star and leader of the squad. Mike averaged 22.8 points per game, a mark which won for him the PHSL scoring crown. The allwaround play of cap- tain and Floor general Len Katz was outstanding too. Certainly the Eaglest best performance of the year came at Withrow where the then winless Eagles upset the even- tual league champion Tigers 80-74. As usual, Oldham led the team with 27 points and an almost unbelievable total of 35 rebounds. But, above all, this was a team Win as seniors Joel Kaplan and Clyde Solomon both hit career high point totals in the victory. Four wins and seven defeats later, the Eagles journeyed to the VC Fieldhouse to take on the Rockets of Clermont Northeastern in the district tournament. Falling far behind in the second half, the Blue and Gold battled back gallantly, pulling within three points late in the game, only to lose 65-59. First Row: L. Southall, A. Bowman, C. Russo, M. Girk Athletic Association Student Council Critics have often said that student government is simply an exercise in democracy. This year's student council, how- ever, while introducing its members to representative government, also proved itself capable of meaningful and exciting action. Under the administration of president Myron Dale and faculty advisor, Mr. Donald Ankenman, honor study halls finally became a reality, as did a course evaluation handbook. The Forum speaker program was widened to include all helds of interest. In an attempt to encourage school spirit, Council supplied buses to football games at Oak Hills, Miami Trace, and Piqua. AFS, the VAST tutoring program, open houses, and lunchroom monitoring, all originated in other years, were continued, expanded and improved. The crowning achievement of student council was its participation in the Peace Corps, school-to-school program. Using clever publicity to inspire the student body, council raised well over the $1000 required to build a ulittle Walnut Hillsll in an underdeveloped country. In doing so, student council won the praise of the school and of the community at large. Representatives-Fint Row: D. Hughes, Jl Loch, C. Kiner, R. S Heidenreich, L. Wagner, N. HOH'man L. The American Field Service annually presents the stu- dent body of Walnut Hills with a great opportunity and an equally great responsibility. The opportunity of associat- ing with Dorine Van Rijssel of the Netherlands and Enrico Lugli of Italy has given Walnut Hills students practice in international understanding. At the same time, the students were enriching the experience of Enrico and Dorine. The responsibility, of course, is obtaining the $1500 needed to continue the program. Under co-chairmen Liz Bradshaw and Bob Schreiber, the money was successfully and creatively raised by such activities as the AFS Buffet, the paper drive, the Royals basketball game, Penny Day, the calendar sale, and the Amanda Ambrose concert. 93 k h j , . a $815 hm Kr wt wk shinil-Jnt-ilil K. a . -. Remembrancer 1966-67 was a year of transition for the Remembrancer. With new quarters, a relatively inexperienced staff, and, at the semester break, a new advisor, the process of pub- lishing the yearbook was at times trying. The process of struggling with deadlines and with other staff members, however, was beneficial for everyone involved. The result of the stafPs labors, the 1967 Remembrancer that lies before you, is yours to cherish forever. The staff can only hope that it is an anual worthy of the year whose story it tells. Production of the Gleam, however, is an all year affair. The literary staff meets weekly to sift through the stacks of papers, seeking the highest quality material. After the literary works have been chosen, it is the job of the art staff to compose appropriate artistic backing. Other programs studied Mexico and Spain, a country that four club members visited in 1966. The highlight of the year was the German Club Band,s concert and skit at the January activities assembly. 105 Choir Membership in the A Capella Choir represents the pin- nacle of success for any Walnut Hills vocalist. The 125 singers, all personally selected by Mr. Bige Hammons, give concerts for the school at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and again in the spring. They compete for more wide- spread recognition in the district choral music contest at Anderson High School in March. Many members also participate in the annual presentation of Jean Carlo Me- nottils llAmalhl and the Night Visitorsfl one of Walnut Hillsl newest traditions. The class of 168's version of this revered tradition was presented early in September after months of planning, writing, and rehears- ing. Directed by Sally Benjamin, Mike Oestreicher, and Mrs. Iannelli, the show revolved arOund the struggle of Dial-a-Date, a computerized match-making firm, to retain control of the love industry. Dwight Hughes won roars of approval as Dial-a-Dateis ace troubleshooter, the intrepid Archibald. The show was also spiced with various specialty acts, with the singing of The InspimtiEmS,5 and Karen Roberts particularly memorable. Was c:Peemuts 0f '66 really the best forever? The class of l68 will always think so. 119 Walnuts tiWalnutsj: the annual school variety show, written, created, and produced entirely by the student body, was performed in March. This year, the show was an hact in three plays? consisting of three separate and unrelated one-act skits. Act One was a spoof of hThe Fantasticksf, Americak longest-running musical comedy. The second act featured a brilliant satirical look at Chet Huntley and David Brinkley and television in general. Induction into military service, a current problem of utmost importance, was the subject of the final act. An unusually Hne stage band, as well as the singing chorus: ponies, and specialty acts, made the entire show a musical delight. 110 Walnuts OEicers Firxt Raw: H. Abts. Second Row: B. Warner, B. Adjustment is the key word for the seventh grader. The five hundred tcefhesh who arrive at Walnut Hills in September are a terrified group of un- believably small people, coming from all over the city and knowing almost no one. The first week at school can be traumatic, as the Klefht? wanders through the labyrinth of hallways, searching for the elevator, the fourth floor, the band room and the gym. All the while, he barely escapes being trampled by the upperclass giants who stride so con- fldently. However, several agencies serve to ease this period of transition. Big Brothers and Big Sisters introduce seventh-graders to their school before opening day and stay in contact with their little charges at least for the first week. Counselors are also available to help. Inevitably, the physical plan of the school begins to make some sense, the upperclassmen seem to have shrunk in stature, and the class work is not as hard. Soon, the hehie feels he has always been a W.H.H.S. student. In the classroom, a heavy load of five rather comprehensive major courses readies the ciE-Flatyi for the academic pres- sures of the senior high years. By February, each student takes a serious look at his future, tentatively choosing his courses for the next four years. The eighth gradefs par- ticipation outside the classroom is also of a preparatory nature. Junior Student Council provides a training ground for prospective school leaders. The athletes begin to develop their skills, awaiting the chance to excel in freshman com- petition. Even in his second year at Walnut Hills, the eighth grader is still a little shy, a little unsure of himself, a little afraid of the wealth of opportunities that the school offers him. In this time of anticipation, however, the eighth grader gains the maturity needed for his emergence as an active member of the Walnut Hills community. 14.0 14.1 Eighth Grade Row 1: Charles Adams, Cheryl Adams, Frank Adams, Mary Adams, Rick Ahrens, Chris Alexander, Maggie Ammon, Michael An- derson. I F reshmen A time to participate . . . With the at least nominal ascendance to senior high school comes the call to be more than just an 8:25-3:00 student. The freshman soon learns that the position he holds, of being at once the king of the junior high and the pawn of the senior high, has many advantages. A body of selfhgovernment belongs to the freshman as do Hve interscholastic athletic. teams. Partici- pation increases noticeably as the ninth-grader finds that suddenly he is the big man in his world. He shows his pride in the class of 1970 by wearing a blue and gold beanie through the halls. His social aspirations are satisfied by the Fresh Frolic, an annual spring affair which signals the freshmaifs new involvement in his school. Another call beckons the freshmanithe rather faint call of his studies. With senior high status comes the unwel- corned realization that grades now count for college, just four years away. For the first time, the Walnut Hills student hnds himself almost overwhelmed with concerns outside the classroom. In the sophomore year, the student must choose an activity from the many available if he desires to become more completely involved in the working of his school. Social life also becomes more important in the life of the student as he enters the tenth grade, for, as a member of the senior high, he can partici- pate socially with the upperclassmen. The sixteenth birth- day is a part of the sophomore year for many. This, of course, brings with it one of the most drastic steps in grow- . . The sophomore, however, is still primarily a student, and he can ill afford to ignore his studies. This year the leadership of the sophomore class kept the rest of the school well aware of its presence. In addition to the customary sale of Sophomore Directories, the class brought ttThemt, and mfhe Strangers in Townh to Walnut Hills in December for one of the finest open houses of the year. The second semester was devoted to the production of Peanuts, starting with the election of the directors in February. Jurma, J. Perkinson. R. Wellbaum. D. Kay, 5. Smith. Little groups of letters like PSAT, NMSQT, SAT, ACH, and ACT gain meaning as do the conglomeration of numbers that accompany them. Now, the junior starts the long process of choosing one college out of several thousand. Constantly, he is reminded that the junior year is high schoolls most important in the eyes of the university ad- missions ofEcer, the only man who really counts. Work, then, is the mission of the eleventh grader. Outside of the classroom, the junior year begins in a spirited and unforgettable way. On the second weekend of September, the class presents The Best Peanuts For- ever? After the exhiliration of a successful show and the sublime joy of the cast party, the rest of the year is a let- down. Generally, there is little for the newly-united class to do other than study. A play and a prom are presented, but both of these activities are shared with other classes. The juniors must therefore devote their time to the schoolls other activities, eagerly awaiting next year when they will assume the reins of leadership. This year a cloud of doubt enshrouds the junior, how- ever, as he wonders if the Cincinnati voter will allow such activities to exist in the fall of 1967. Juniors Row 1 : Bertram Alexander. Whoever named the gradua- tion ceremony commencementll possessed infinite wis- dom, for the end of high school means the start of an- other experience. For most Walnut Hills seniors, this means college, but, afterwards, as each graduate shapes his own destiny, the class will be scattered among various endeavors and in various locations. Still each senior will share the memory of a rich and meaningful final year at Walnut Hills. The year begins with a picnic and a rally, reminding the seniors that these next nine months will be special ones. September, Octoberj and November fly by, a blur of football games, college conferences, and homework. Each spare moment is needed to Enish college applications and to cram for college boards. The class leadership asserts itself, raising money by shining shoes and selling dolls, preparing for the big days ahead. Homecoming, with a semi-formal dance, signals a needed break in the hectic mixture of studies and responsibilities, and soon the final set of exams are over. Inevitably, too, Advanced Placement tests are history and the graduatc-to-be can finally enjoy being a senior. The prom, the picnic, the honors, the ceremony, the boatride pass all too quickly. Walnut Hills is in the past for three hundred idealists, ready to face the world.
