CINCINNATI PUBLIC SCHOOLS 608 EAST McMILLAH STREET CINCINNATI 6. OHIO WENDELL H. Pl ERCE SUPERINTENDEN'I' November 5, 1963 TO THE PUPILS OF WALNUT HILLS HIGH SCHOOL: At no time in history has it been so important for us as Americans to pause and to consider what we believe. If we believe that our heritage of active citizenship is to be perpetuated, each individual must prepare diligently for this responsibility. Since Thomas Jefferson asserted that whenever the people are well informed, they can be trusted with their own government, we have counted on education as a major protector of our liberty. The years at Walnut Hills and beyond offer wide opportunities for your development as informed citizens, as individuals competent to earn your own way in the worla, and as persons who can attain satisfactory human relationships. A wise education multiplies every natural power and lays the foundation for the intelligent direction of each life. As members of a free society it is imperative that you gain a basic understanding of written ani spoken language, of mathe- matics, of the world of social man, of the physical world, and of vocational and professional specialty. Only then can you act as truly intelligent citizens. The success of American democracy depends upon creative, responsible, and free minds. Its future rests in your minds, your hearts - and your hands. Sincerely yours, 0 MWWW
