The Curriculum at Walnut Hills High School - N! Walnut l-Iilis High School seeks primarily to give the student :1 founda- tion for the cultural and practical aspect of college. work, to prepare him for the demands of higher education. The course of study is designed, not to prepare the student to step from the Ciassrnmn into the world, but to prepare him so that he may receive the greatest possible henetit from college training. As part of his college preparatory work, every student who enters Walnut Hills High School in the seventh grade, is required to take Latin for at least four years of his sixnyear course. That this emphasis upon Latin is popular with the student body is proved by the fact that nearly one-half of the present Senior Class has continued the study of Latin through the entire six years. Equally popular have been the courses in modern languages. During the past year, three-fourths of the students in the upper three classes have taken either French or Spanish. Thirtyeight students are taking the classical course; that is, their courses include both Greek and Latin. The history department is also important in the curriculum. Every senior is required to take American History and Cities, and the optional courses in Ancient, Mediaeval, and Modem.History have this year been on the programs of some sixty pupils. The emphasis which Walnut i-Iiils High School places upon the cultural side of education does not, however, exclude attention to the sciences. Every student must take one year either of Physics or Chemistry, and courses are offered in Botany, Zoology, and General Science. Mathematics also occupies an important place in the curriculum, and during the past year thirty stu- dents have advanced so far in this field :15 to take the optimal course in Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry. . Several students each year take the music and art courses. These pupils spend part of each day at Wuinut Hills High School and devote the remainder of their time to work at the Conservatory of Music or at the Art School. In the past year, four students have taken the art course and four have taken the music course. The school year 1929,1930 marks the tenth anniversary of the establish- ment of Walnut Hilis as 21 classical high school. The plan has thus far been highly satisfactory, and the excellent records made by Walnut Hills, gradu- ates in their college work has been :1 testimonial to its excellence. Pugr .Vt'ur
