THEY TOUCHED OUR HUES Mr Eceleston with the Burkeys. This year we dedicate the WALNUT TREE to Kevin Von Holten and Mrs. Eileen Burkey. Kevin, a 1979 graduate of WHS, died in a tragic accident. He was a talented artist and musician. Kevin’s family, in his memory, made possible an art department award and a plaque listing Arion Music Award winners. Mrs. Burkey, math and English teacher, retired this year after 28 years at Walnut High School. A farewell assembly was held in her honor to wish her a happy retirement. To teach is to shape young minds,” said the plaque she was given. She did it so well. Mr. and Mrs. Burkey as she receives a standing ovation. 3 Kevin's art work on display. ANNUAL STAFF HAS THE SPIRIT To gain additional knowledge for putting the yearbook together, eight students and Mrs. Bolz traveled to Galesburg to attend a Newsfoto workshop. They came home with new ideas on themes and designs. During National Yearbook Week, they had displays at the town library and at the high school. They also raffled off a yearbook that Jodie Briar won. This year, during Homecoming, Annual Staff sold spirit links. The senior class won with the longest chain, and Tammy Choiniere won half of what the seniors put in. The spirit chains were displayed at the Homecoming football game. Barbie Bacorn and Lois Meisenheimer were co-editors for the second year, Tammy Choiniere was in charge of selling advertising, and Joy Meisenheimer was in charge of the pop machine. Other “veterans” on the staff were Lori Kuehl. Mandi VonHolten, Shauna Erickson, Heather VonHolten, Connie Olson, and Linda Olson. Joy Meisenheimer was again chief typist, using the IBM computer to make disks to send to Newsfoto in Texas along with the pages and pictures. Front: S. Erickson, J. Sidebottom. Row 2: D. Birkey, D.
