Marching Blues' Joy. We are Walnut! Playing an important part. Expression is the need of our souls. Enjoying the moment. Royalty. Imagination lives in any language. Practice pays. We're going places! Time out for books. Igniting the annual bonfire. THEY TOUCHED OUR HUES Mr Eceleston with the Burkeys. This year we dedicate the WALNUT TREE to Kevin Von Holten and Mrs. Eileen Burkey. Kevin, a 1979 graduate of WHS, died in a tragic accident. He was a talented artist and musician. Kevin’s family, in his memory, made possible an art department award and a plaque listing Arion Music Award winners. Mrs. Burkey, math and English teacher, retired this year after 28 years at Walnut High School. A farewell assembly was held in her honor to wish her a happy retirement. To teach is to shape young minds,” said the plaque she was given. She did it so well. Mr. and Mrs. Burkey as she receives a standing ovation. 3 Kevin's art work on display. Mrs. McFadden gives Mrs.Burkey a corsage from the staff. Mrs. Burkey also received a package of rice cakes from her Lunch Bunch. Daughter Ann, a surprise guest for Mrs. Burkey’s assembly. They came home with new ideas on themes and designs. During National Yearbook Week, they had displays at the town library and at the high school. They also raffled off a yearbook that Jodie Briar won. This year, during Homecoming, Annual Staff sold spirit links. The senior class won with the longest chain, and Tammy Choiniere won half of what the seniors put in. The spirit chains were displayed at the Homecoming football game. Barbie Bacorn and Lois Meisenheimer were co-editors for the second year, Tammy Choiniere was in charge of selling advertising, and Joy Meisenheimer was in charge of the pop machine. Other “veterans” on the staff were Lori Kuehl. Mandi VonHolten, Shauna Erickson, Heather VonHolten, Connie Olson, and Linda Olson. Joy Meisenheimer was again chief typist, using the IBM computer to make disks to send to Newsfoto in Texas along with the pages and pictures. Front: S. Erickson, J. Sidebottom. Row 2: D. Birkey, D. Row 2: Tom Carl, Ron Eckberg, Vice-President Charles Meisenheimer. Not pictured Scott Haurberg. TO THE CLASS OF 1988 . .. Twelve years of elementary and secondary education have ended, and now you've begun to scatter to other campuses and new occupations. Your education has been characterized by many demands and many tests, but the most severe test is yet to come. How well you learned to date — how devoted you are to further learning — how serious you are about doing well in life — will all be tested in the next few years. As you face those tests, we know you’ll do your best. Remember that the Class of 1988 may never meet again in its entirety, but also remember that the Class of 1988, and all of us at Walnut High School, will always be with you in spirit. Best wishes for all success and happiness in the future. You will always live in our memories. Superintendent Lawrence Eggleston. 120 Autographs ean engelo, texaa •nr II ii
