Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1986 volume:

In 1985-1986, we the students of Walnut High School left our mark. We hosted two students from other countries; we went into state competition in football, speech, track, pompons, and music; we tested our academic skills in Scholastic Bowl, Readers’ Interpretation, speech, writing, business, agriculture, and art contests and math competition. We practiced football indoors for a memorable cold, wet afternoon of quarterfinal state competition. We did some of our homework on computers. We felt the nation’s loss of seven astronauts. We wore Shaker sweaters and wild shorts, and some of us cut our hair like a Chicago Bear quarterback. We were proud of our accomplishments and we learned from our failures. This was our year. . . Tradition of Excellence Maintained Here BOARD OF EDUCATION. Seated: Peggy Sarver, President Merle Von Holten, Margaret Carr. Back: Secretary Leslie Shoff, Tom Carl, Scott Haurberg. In memory of the late former Superintendent Cecil Snider, who left in 1956, after many years as an educator here, we dedicated a flagpole. Pictured left to right are Superintendent Larry Eggleston, Board President Merle Von Holten, Mrs. Snider, Mr. Phil Hare representing Congressman Lane Evans, Representative Richard Mautino, and Fred Snider, son of Mr. and Mrs. Snider at the Walnut football game ceremony. We set aside this space in our yearbook in memory of Timothy Swearingen, a classmate; Cecil Snider, a former principal; and the seven NASA astronauts who died in the Challenger explosion. In memory of the seven astronauts: Ellison S. Onizuka, Christa McAuliffe, Gregory B. Jarvis, Judith A. Resnik, Michael J. Smith, Francis R. Scobee, and Ronald E. Time is past.” —Robert Greene We dedicate this, the fiftieth WALNUT TREE, to all the people who have worked on all the books throughout all of the years. Pictured above are the forty-nine volumes which have preceded this one. The first one was made in 1923; none were made in 1930, 1932-1938, and 1940-1945. At one time, only seniors were Annual Staff members; now all four classes are represented on the staff. The 1985-1986 Annual Staff now joins the ranks of those who have spent hours of concentrated effort to preserve the memories of the happenings at Walnut High School. Speech Contest, sold flowers for homecoming, and sold photo buttons of W.H.S. athletes. During their week in Washington, D.C., they studied many areas of American National Government, visited many historical places, and met high school students from across the G.S. Many local organizations contributed money so they could go, and the P.C. parents worked in the concession stands along with the students. DeWaele. Back: Mrs. Bass. T. Judd. K. Fredrickson, C. Hall, T. Von Holten. Kelly (Don Marquis) Tim (archy) archy and mehitabel, a collection of free verse newspaper columns by Walnut native Don Marquis, was adapted for the 1986 WHS Readers' Theatre. Don Marquis, portrayed by Kelly Fredrickson, narrates the tale of the cockroach he discovered typing in his office. Archy, the cockroach who once was a human poet (Tim Von Holten), and mehitabel, the cat who used to be Cleopatra (Candi Hall), are joined by other alley creatures, played by Ann DeWaele and Teresa Judd. Together they give a view of humanity and nature from the underside” of life. The WHS Readers' Theatre team placed second in Regional competition, then advanced to Sectional. Tim Von Holten was selected by the judges of both contests to be in the honorary All-Star Casts. Sponsor-Director Mrs. Betty Bass composed the script. Readers' Theatre also performed for the Walnut Senior Citizens Club, the Bryant Club, and at Walnut Township Library during its honoring of Don Marquis for National Library Week. Yes, your high school days have ended. Graduation, parties, celebrations ... all of the events which surround graduation have come and gone. The memories of high school ... sports, speech, drama, music, publications, classes, teachers, friends ... are all beginning to fade and even be replaced. Now, it’s on with the rest of your lives. I wish you the best of luck as you journey down that road to the future, a future which will be as bright as you make it. Your effort, desire, and perseverance will carry you as far as you wish to go. I urge you to work for the common good of all the people and peace in the world in your lifetime. A quotation by Alfred Lord Tennyson adorns my wall ... I pass it on to you in parting: “When shall all men’s good be each man’s rule and universal peace be like a shaft of light across the land.’’ Lawrence P. Eggleston Superintendent and Shan Gregg.
