The meaning of life is out there somewhere, and it is up to each to find it. . . for himself. 1973-1974 WALNUT TREE WALNUT HIGH SCHOOL HOME OF THE BLUE RAIDERS Community Unit District No. 508 Walnut, HI. 61376 Joan Miller Editor Mary Glaser Co-Editor FOREWORD Each one of us can find within these pages memories and meaning uniquely their own. MESSAGE TO CLASS OF 1974 Upon completion of your four years in high school, I hope that each of you will have acquired the education and maturity needed to fully assume the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship in a democracy. You will need to work cooperatively with others as you strive to realize your goals. Before you can really understand others, you must seek a deeper understanding and control of yourself and of your own attitudes and prejudices. Do not expect instant success in your chosen field. No guarantee of success was given in our Bill of Rights, our Constitution, or our Declaration of Independence. Sometimes we tend to confuse a guarantee of opportunity with a guarantee of success. Every person should have the opportunity to use his talents and to exercise his abilities to the utmost. Your teachers seek to prepare you, to cause you to be curious, inquiring, concerned, and to select worthy objectives. Preparation alone won't do it. You must do it. It is essential that you develop a respect for work and excellence in performance, an appreciation of learning, and the ability to carry a task to completion. I sincerely wish each of you success throughout your life. 8 ADMINISTRATION FACULTY 10 whs faculty Dale Baxter, BS Cooperative Education Agriculture, FFA I Nina Gerbitz School Secretary Stephen LaRussa, BA, MA Superintendent Maria Barton, BA Spanish I, II, III Assistant Sponsor of Sophomore class Foreign Language Club Lynne Bechtold, BS English II, III, IV Newspaper 11 Eileen Burkey, BS English I Gary Hassler, BA English II Vocational English Physical Education Fres-Soph. It's the recollection of the last few months of the Gilbreth family before the twelve children's father dies. The children in the end finally realize their father's life’s goal: to teach his children not to waste time--for there isn't always a tomorrow. 53 54 feudin', fightin', fussin' Feudin', Fightin' an’ Fussin' was the annual Junior class play for 1974, and it was the most hilarious hillbilly play in these far parts with its talented cast. The rich, stuffy Mrs. Snodgrass and her dignified assistant, William Bishop III tries to bring culture to the barbaric hillbillies of Polecat County. Paw Fern-heiser and his eldest daughter, Lizzie have different ideas. Lizzie sweet-talks Mr. Bishop into a recreation hall. The next problem was to convince Mrs. Snodgrass into a Recreation Hall. 55 58 60 61 the graduates of 1974 Front row (1. to r.): Cecilia Marie Gugerty, Diane Lenore DeWaele, Melanie Ann Guither, Carla Jo Gustafson, Marlys Marie Milbrandt, Joan Elizabeth Miller, Kathleen Jo Hansen; Second Row: Kay Marie Twidell, Douglas Gordon Dahl, Nathan Foster Baxter, Thomas Peter Dienslake, Stanley Allen Wolfe, Gale Evelyn Hardy, Phyllis Ellen DeWaele; Third Row: Lori Jean Baumgartner, John Fletcher Kiser, Richard Gail Gonigam, Kevin Leroy Wallace, Terry Joe Balagna, William Ronald Ganschow, Bee-Ja Peterson Thompson; Fourth Row: Rhea Jean Von Holten, Vera Lynn Kostman, Ronald Alan Pierson, William Gerald Hansen, Kurt Wayne Peterson, Mark Steven Williamson, Mary Elizabeth Pcgliano, Beth Anne Carpenter; Back Row: Jennifer Ann Ricknell, Linda Lou Bohm, Mark Orville Mathew, Curtis Lee Magnuson, Lowell Thomas Drayton, Jr., Ronald Evan Von Holten, Susan Ann Birkey, Nancy Jo Gudgell.
