It consisted of three departments: Primary, intermediate, and grammar school. There were 122 pupils and G. D. Peddicord was the principal. About 1884, the high school was organized consisting of only the tenth and eleventh grades, with no one graduating until 1890. In 1894 a new, six-room building was constructed. The high school at this time included three grades, each consisting of six classes, and had an enrollment of 33 students. About 1900 the school was organized into a four-year school. Originally Walnut School District embraced only three thousand acres. Today the high school district covers 124.81 square miles of area in Bureau, Lee, and Whiteside Counties, with a taxable valuation of $19,774,661. A new building was built in 1914 and burnt down in 1933. In 1917 the first Walnut High School Board of Education was elected. Our present school building was erected in 1922. Improvements were constantly being made. In 1934 new tile floors were laid in the gym and foods department. Gifts to the campus included the fountain and gateway. In 1936 the heating system was reconstructed, the foods department remodeled, the auditorium redecorated, the stage enlarged, and a balcony built. A 30' x 83’ farm shop was completed in 1942. A 30' x 45' addition to the building was made in 1951. During 1958 and 1959 the gymnasium was enclosed and fire screens were installed. In 1961 a 36' addition to the farm shop and a new agriculture classroom were completed. The music department was moved to the north end of the agriculture building. This move made two additional classrooms available in the main building. A new industrial arts department was added during the summer of 1963. In 1890 the teaching staff consisted of two teachers for 33 students. In contrast to this, in 1963 there is a faculty of 14 members for an enrollment of 177 students. Walnut's claim to fame is based on the fact that the famous author and columnist Don Marquis was born and educated here. He graduated from Walnut High in 1894. 4 MRS. Dear Vicki, I hear you're a medical assistant now at the Mayo Clinic. It's surprising how many of our classmates are up there. CAROLYN LUBBS and GINGER HENLINE are both working as Lab Technicians, and GENE WARFIELD, who is working in the research department, is becoming quite a prominent scientist. I thought you might like to know about some of our other classmates. I’ve seen several of them lately. KAREN HEITZLER is working for John Deere. SUE COOK, CHARLENE HANSEN, and BETTY ODELL are working as secretaries at a large firm in Chicago. JULIE DERSHAM, who is an interior decorator, just finished decorating two new beauty salons, one for LINDA BOROP and one for SHERRY ECKBERG. She has also redone JIM BA CORN'S photography studio; she's a busy girl, almost as busy as JANICE LARUSSA, who is an interpreter at the U.N. Oh, we've got two new barbers in town, FLOYD CLAPP and DAVE LAURITZEN. Their shop is right next to BERNARD HEADLEY’S butcher shop, and right down the street from JIM BUZARD'S Garage. LINDA GERDES and ANN LORENZEN are in New York now; they're secretaries for a large publishing firm, and GEORGIA FAY is working on business machines there. DARRY LAURITZEN and PAUL CUMMINGS have been working for Uncle Sam in the Marines. When I last saw DICK SASH, he was on a soapbox preaching liberalism- quite a politician, that boy. By the way, our high school has a whole new crop of teachers. ALAN YONK has taken over the math department. KAY McCARTER has been teaching art and English. JIM BANGTSON is doing well managing the school as the principal, and RON FRITZ is our new coach. DENNI HURST is teaching speech. In grade school we have one new teacher--PAT WANGELIN; she's teaching the second grade. It seems that most of our classmates are doing quite well. BURTON RAABE is the sales manager of a firm in Los Angeles; I think they sell Beatle wigs. JANET HUSSEY is out in California, too. She's making the movie. The Singing Psychiatrist. There are still quite a few kids left around Walnut. LARRY YERK, FRED MEISENHEIMER, LARRY LAURITZEN, and MIKE DIETZ have all become successful farmers--on their own farms. PEGGY WALLACE is running her own restaurant and doing quite well. She even has her own private hairdresser, CATHY WAGNER, and a secretary, MARIELLEN BROEREN. DANA POMEROY isn't too far from good old Walnut. She's a dental assistant in Princeton. That's about all of our classmates--a very successful group, I'd say. As you know. I’m working as a dental assistant to a very prominent dentist. I’ll see you at the next class reunion.
