FOREWORD Now we launch--where shall we anchor?-’, was the motto chosen by the Class of 1963. Accordingly, the annual staff has chosen a ship theme to record the events of the past year. It is our desire that the days at Walnut High will long live in your hearts as we have tried to record them in this the 27th edition of the Walnut Tree. So let us pull up anchor and set sail------- 4

HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL The first Walnut school was organized in 1875 with a total enrollment in nine grades of one hundred and twenty-two students, with Mr. G. D. Paddicord as principal. In 1884, a high school was organized with only tenth and eleventh grades. In 1894, a new six-room building was built, remodeled in 1913, but was destroyed by fire in 1933. A new building was built in 1922, and the new principal was Mr. Charles Milton. In 1935 the principal's home was moved to its present location, remodeled, and Mr. C. A. Snider, who served the school for many years, was the first principal to occupy the new home. The school held its first Homecoming in 1946, and in 1947 a lighted football field was added to the campus. In 1962 our school added to its enrollment some of the students from Bureau Township, so our enrollment is now one hundred and ninety. We also added six new teachers, increasing our faculty to fourteen. Many additions and innovations have been added to our school. Our curriculum has expanded to include many new subjects, such as French and Mechanical Drawing; the band has a building of its own; and now our school has its own school paper. 6
