You will see the freshmen try out their wings for the first time, andthe Sopho- mores make their first successful flight. The juniors have gained momentum and the Seniors go on to new horizons. Although we can not present to you every- thing of importance, we have done our best to portray this year as one of the most out- standing of our high school days . .f Dedication We, the Class of 1959, feel very honored to dedicate this annual to Mr. Lyle R. Bruss, As our advisor our first two years, he helped our class to a more successful start. We Seniors thank you, Mr. Bruss, not only for being such a great coach and promoter of school spirit, but also for your helpful guidance . We cremated McGeese QWethersfieldj in effigy. The Co-Captains and Coaches gave a pep talk. We climaxed our evening by the snake dance through town. In the parade, on Friday afternoon, were the floats from each class, the business men's floats, the school buses, and both the High School and Grade School bands. The Homecoming attendants rode in convertibles, accompanied by the Co-Captains and Don Edson, President of Student Council. Friday night we succeeded in beating Wethersfield, 26-12. During the half the floats from the classes were presented in the order they placed . The Senior float won first place with its theme, We Panda Win. The Juniors' placed second, Sophomores' third, and the Freshmen's last. All the floats were exceptionally good this year and each class should feel proud of theirs. Queen Ramona Livey was crowned by Don Edson. We climaxed our Homecoming festivities by dancing to the music of Joe DeZutti. During intermission entertainment was provided by the Girls' Barbershop Quartet, Dale and Kathy Kepner, and Les Renner. The Queen was escorted by the Co-Captains Dave Kepner and Rodney Von Holten, and presented red roses by Co-Captain, Marvin Neahring. The Queen's court consisted of the Senior attendant Verna Andersen es- corted by jim Mattingly, the Junior attendant Judy Urich escorted by Freddie Perrizo, the Sophomore attendant Phyllis Von Holten escorted by jack Esmond, and the Fresh- man attendant Kathy Kepner escorted by Roger Von Holten. The dance was a great success and was enjoyed by all. Christmas Program A large audience enjoyed the fine Christmas program at the Walnut Com- munity High School on December loth. The fifty member mixed chorus was ac- companied by Kathy and Dale Kepner at the marimba, Linda Kruse and Romona Livey at pianos and joan Andersen at the organ. Mr. Charles jupin was the nar- rator, and the figures for the manger scene were loaned by Mr. George E. Gonigam, jr. The Leon Andersen family V provided the I-Iammond organ for the T. program. Mr. O'May is to be congratu- 4 lated for the outstanding program, and many expressed a desire to hear similar pro- grams in the future. unior Class Play The junior Class presented a three-act comedy farce, Shy Guy, by Paul S . Mc- Coy on November 2lst. The play, under the direction of Mr. C. A . jupin, centered around teenager Fred Hastings fPhil La Russaj who had been a paid model for the Glamour Girl Cosmetic Company. I-Ie would like to keep this a secret from his girl and his parents . A very humorous situation arises when his best friend Larry Madison fFred Perrizoj tries to help him. The play was one of the best in recent years and was enjoyed by all. First came dress-up day. All freshmen and new stud- ents were required to wear good clothes to school which included gloves and heels for girls, suits complete with ties for boys, and hats for both. That day they practiced their bows and curtseys accompanied by a cheery Good morning, Almighty Senior. A little later, twelve days to be exact, found the same students dressed quite differently. Instead of good dress- es the girls were wearing bibbed overalls on backwards, with sweatshirts underneath. Their hair was divided into pony-tails tied with green ribbon. The boys were found wearing straight skirts and sweaters and veiled hats . All were wearing signs stat- ing that they were but lowly freshmen. All freshmen reported to school that night to finish their task of be- coming full-fledged students of Walnut High. Semester Exams Semester exams were january 16-17, 1959. There was the usual mid-year rush and cramming for exams. As every year the Gymnasitun was set up as a mass study hall, ln almost all classes students proved their x L Q. Student Da On Friday, March 6th, the Student Council took over the operation of W.C .H.S. Don Edson served as our Principal and Deanie Hochstatter took the place of Donna Mungor as office Secretary. Each class was in the charge of a student Teacher who was selected from a list submitted by each teacher . The faculty of our school spent the day visiting various classes, other than their own, and catching up on back work. It was a most profitable and enjoyable day for both the faculty and student body. Concert Band is an organization of sixty-five members with an instrumentation that in- cludes clarinets, saxophones, flutes, bassoon, oboe, tympani, cornets, trombones, baritones, basses, French horns, and percussions. The band performs for all home football and basketball games, presents an annual spring concert, participates in the Blackhawk Band Festival, competes in state contests, and makes at least one ap- pearance at college homecomings. At all marching ap- pearances, the band is accompanied by a corps of twirl- ers and a color guard. Our library contains many popular numbers, concert numbers from Beethoven, Schubert, Tschaikowsky, and Brahms, as well as attractive novelty numbers. The I 1 MIXED CLARINET QUARTET-K. Dalzeil, S.
