is Qi? Roger Emerson MELICK was born in Marshall- town, Iowa, on August 18, 1921, son of Carl E. and Pearl CCaseJ MELICK. He attended High School and Junior College in Marshalltown before enlisting on 27 December 1941. He had advanced to the rating of Yeoman, first class, when transferred to the U. S. Navy Wartime Officer Training Program called V-12. He studied at the University of Michigan, and Mar- quette University where he graduated with a Bach- elor of Naval Science Degree on 25 October 1945 and commissioned an Ensign. In 1964 he received his Master of Arts Degree in Personnel Administration from the George Washington University. After commissioning CDR MELICK was as- signed briefly to Destroyer School, Norfolk, Virginia, and early in 1946 reported to the USS DORAN KDMS-415 which was sweeping mines in Japanese waters. Subsequently to this tour of duty he was assigned to the USS FRANK KNOX CDDR-7423 USS EVERSOLE IDD-7897, USS BEALE CDDE- 4715, USS ROBERTS DE-7493. and served on the staffs of COMDESPAC, COMPHIBPAC, and COM- CRUDIV 3. The latter was embarked at various times in the cruisers HELENA, BREMERTON, and QUINCY. During his tour of duty in EVERSOLE he participated in the Amphibious Invasions at IN- CHON and WONSAN. KOREA and the withdrawal operations of United States Marines from HUNG- NAM, KOREA, While he was attached to staff, COM- CRUDIV 3 the command was assigned responsibili- ties for Escort, Blockade. and Sea Air Rescue of the length of the East Coast of Korea. It was during this period ff duty that he was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device. Shore duty assignments have been U. S. Navy Postgraduate School at Annapolis. Maryland and Monterey, California, Line Officer School Monterey, California. Armed Forces Staff College, Norfolk Vir- ginia, the Office of Naval Intelligence, and Staff, Commander in Chief, U. S. Atlantic Fleet. CDR MELICK assumed duties as Commanding Officer, USS WALLACE L. LIND CDD-7037 on 17 November 1964. In addition to the Navy Commendation Medal, he has the American Defense Service Medal, the American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Occupation Medal fAsiatic Claspl, National Defense Service Medal. Korean Campaign Medal with five operation Stars, United Nations Medal CKoreal, and the South Korean Presidential Unit Citation. Married to the former Jey Riccio of Newark, New Jersey, he has one daughter, Carol. His official residence is Morris Plains, New Jersey. He attended Sandersville High Schdalnq Sandersville, Georgia, and Pearisburg High School Peta 'm burg, Virginia. He was graduated from Lynchburg: COHSS' in Lynchburg, virgin-ia. LCDR Horn has completed gm? uate courses at the University of California and the Geor - Washington University. In 1951 he enlisted in the Naval Reserve and attained the rating of BMG3 prior to bein commissioned Ensign, USNR in June 1953. g After commissioning, LCDR HOYE served in USS JOHNSTON CDD-8211, transferred to the regular Navy and served subsequent sea tours in USS C, P. CECIL fDDR-8351 in command of Uss LAKELAND QLSM-3735 and Ugg GENESEE CAOG-83, and with the Staff, Commander Serv. ice Group THREE. During his tour of duty in JOHNSTON he was present in Trieste, F.T.T. during the Communist riots in December 1954. In CECIL he participated in opera- tions during the Suez Crisis of 1956 and the Lebanon Crisis of 1957. In GENESEE and on Staff CSG3 he participated in the Laos crisis of 1961 and Vietnam support operations. LCDR HOYE has had shore assignments with the U.S. Fleet Anti-Air Warfare Training Center and the Fleet Com- puter Programming Center, Pacific, San Diego, California, in the development, checkout and utilization of digital com- puter programs for the Naval Tactical Data Systems. Prior to joining the USS WALLACE L. LINDWIDD- 7033 in July 1965, LCDR HOYE was graduated from the School of Naval Command and Staff, Naval War College, Newport, R.I. I LCDR HOYE is authorized to wear the National De- fense Service Medal and the Occupation Medal fEurope Claspl. Married to the former June JENKINS, daughter Of Captain P. H.
