Senior Class History
In the fall of 1943, ten students signed aboard the H Viking" for a four year cruise on
the sea of education. Dot, captain of the maiden voyage, led the crew through waters
both stormy and calm, but failed to save Leslie Mcliung, Margaret Anderson, James
Aasness, and Thelma Moe who floundered and sank. At the port of Utopia, the crew dis-
embarked for a three months shore leave. Three months later only six-crew-men show-
ed up for the second sailing. Jean Ustrud left the crew to sail for lVebster, and Gerald
Haugen climbed on deck at Lily. The captain, Phyllis, led them through very calm water
and finally, at the end of nine months, took another well-earned shore-leave, this time
at Honolulu. When the voyage again resumed, five of the original crewmen were
back. Vera Johnson had signed off at Florence during vacation, but Herbert Aasness
floated downstream from Bradley to take her place. Dorothy was back to take the place
Wlieii the last vacation before the end of the journey was over, only four crewmen
returned to finish the trip. Dorothy Hanson, Mayme Gulbraa, and Arlene Fogel decided
to sail another sea, the sea of matrimony. That left Phyllis Urevig, Gerald Haugen, Her-
bert Aasness, and Ruby Nelson, who was picked up from a life raft near Cogswell, North
The senior year was crowded with activities. During April, the crew members as-
sisted the Juniors in presenting a play, on May 2, they sailed to Aberdeen for an inside
look at college life, on a later date in May, they anchored at the Black Hills for their
skip day, May 25th was the date sct for Baccalaureate, and on Commencement night,
May 28th, they left the good ship UViking" with many a backward glance and tearful
eye, each one admitting that this four year journey is filled with many happy memories.
As we sail along the sea of life we carry
with us memories of the past. Today we
think of the old school days and wonder
what the class of 4447" is doing, so we de-
cided to go visiting.
Cruising along we see the large and Well
developed farm of Gerald Haugen. Gerald
is out by the mailbox and so we stop and
have a talk with him. VVhile talking to
him, he informs us that Herbert is teaching
school a short distance a.way. As we enter
the doorway of the school house we find
Herbie teaching his pupils how to blow soap
Instead of disturbing him, we carry on
our journey. Our next stop is the home of
Phyllis Urevig, who is very happly with her
husband and family. As we visit with her.
she tells us that Ruby is a nurse and is ful-
filling her ambition.
Now with our memory refreshed we say
"My what ten years will do.'l
We, the four seniors of the class of 1947,
being of unsound mind, do hereby declare
this to be our last will and testament:
l, Jerry Haugen, do bequeath to Harlan
my basket making ability for a future
championship team and also my job as
"Clipper" editor to Arvid.
I, Ruby Nelson, do bequeath my writing
ability to Gaylord and Norris in hopes they
may someday turn in a class poem. I also
wish to leave my punctuality to Edith Moss.
'l, Herbie Aasness, do bequeath my sense
of humor Cfor my own jokesj to Marion and
all my used. candy wrappers to Beverly.
I, Phyllis Urevig wish to leave my study
habits to Reuben Cmay it improve the fresh-
man classl and my cheerleading position to
