l0ll HI 'l'llIiY Well, here we are, seniors iwhat's left of usll. Little did we realize back in '34 how long and hard would be that trudge up the ladder of success. lt was a sad day in our young lives when we had to give up our freedom of childhood play and face the daily encounter of mastering our ABCs. We really thought we were getting up in the world when, in the second grade, our one ambition was fulfilled, We were admitted as accomplished musicians, we thought, in the Kiddy Band. The song we played most frequently was There's Something About a Soldier. Maybe that's where our hero-worship originated-eh, girls? Our third year of school found us entering, much to our delight, the little white school house. Remember, the one with just two rooms? Within these walls we struggled abut not in vain-to master those dreadful multiplication tables. This was also a great year for the boys, they began their career as officers in the Safety Council. We hope that the fourth grade is the only year in which our editor had good reason to hang his head in shame. Even after much coaxing and persuading, we could not get any of the details out of him but we did find out this much-it was his first whipping. It seems that quite a mix-up occurred to us in the fifth grade. Remember that wonderful play we all had looked forward to so eagerly? The one in which Dot Barrentine was picked to be Mrs. Spratt and the fattest boy in the room Mr. Spratt. Everything was O.K. until the day before the play took place when the teacher discovered her horrible mistake-she had the characters backwards! We had to stuff Dot with pillows and slenderize the boy. Please don't ask us how we did this, Ah, a new school. That's not the big event of our sixth year. Would onyone like to know where Ann Speed got her pen name-Sally Rand? Well, here's the big secret- the accident occurred when we were playing jump rope. Yes, you guessed it, she lost her SKIRT. That, too, was the year when yours truly's shoes floated down Town Creek, but they were retrieved by some courteous gentleman t?l who didn't mind getting his feet wet. iContinued on page 292 ir ir 'A' if 'A' uk if 'lr Page 2l
